I love how Barker keeps his face straight, so earnest, he was such a brilliant actor. He was in a series called Porridge where he plays a cockney convict, and "Open all hours" where he plays a shop assistant who stammers. Hes incredible in both.

Second that. I'd say if Squirrel checks them out I'd say Porridge is the one to go with first as it manages to hit the road running and starts as good as it caries on. (If you do watch Porridge try and find the unofficial pilot "Prisoner and Escort", a one-off comedy short that lead to the BBC commissioning a full series. The film version of Porridge is amusing enough but kind of surplus to requirement while the follow on series Going Straight never seems to catch light despite a pretty good first episode)

Anything to do with clever wordplay in sketches like this one, and Fork Handles were written by the great Ronnie Barker himself under the pseudonym of 'Gerald Wiley'. He used to send the sketches in using a false name so they would be judged on merit and not just because he had written them.

Each episode of The two Ronnies would start with them reading out humorous news items. Ronnie Barker would get a solo slot each week with items like this one - he would play the spokesman from some organisation or other, often involving word play. The sketches would often include them at parties or as shopkeeper and customer (such as Four Candles). Each series would have a serial running through it, the most famous of which was The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town. There were several featuring private eyes Piggy Malone and Charley Farley with titles such as Done To Death and Death Can Be Fatal! Ronnie Corbett would also get a solo slot where, sitting in a chair, he would attempt to tell the audience a joke but would constantly go off on tangents, often involving the producer, before eventually finishing the joke. Each episode would end with a musical item where the Ronnies, sometimes in drag, would since humorous lyrics to well known tunes, and then a few items of late news. They would sign off saying "It's goodnight from me..." "...and it's goodnight from him!"

‘Hairy Whitemouse’ was Mary Whitehouse, a conservative educator and activist in the 70’s. She was often the butt of many comedians jokes as she was very outspoken as a sort of self-appointed campaigner against, in her view, the permissive content on TV at the time. Ronnie nailed it with this one!

Ronnie Barker knows the sketch, because he wrote it. Of all the Two Ronnies sketch types, Ronnie Barker doing his "Government/Society Rep" were always my favorite. Often in the mid to late 80s, new "Alternative Comedy" comics would slander the Two Ronnies as nothing but tit and bum jokes. It was a serious misreading of the genre. Yes, while they did indeed use alot of innuendo, the wording was very cleverly written. Funny that the same Alternative Comedians never went after people like Kenneth Williams and his amazing wordplay for the same reason.

When they speak 'french' they speak English with a French accent. When they speak 'German' they do the same with a German accent. The English sent over someone to help them and when he speaks 'french' he speaks mangled English to show hes speaking French but badly. Classic line is "good moaning, I was just pissing by the door" Its sounds overly convoluted but actually works pretty well. Hope that made sense and if you get time I highly recommend it.

I think this one was actually written by Barker himself, based on an earlier version by David Nobbs. Barker wrote a lot of material for the show under the pen-name Gerald Wiley; initially keeping it secret. Then it was announced that the mysterious Mr Wiley would be revealed at a meeting of the writers and crew. They sat around a big table waiting some named writer to appear... only for Barker to stand up and admit it. From the other end of the table, esteemed British comedy writer Barry Cryer dryly noted, 'Nobody likes a smart arse...'
