To give you an idea of how freakishly strong these lads are back when I was gardening during my Uni holidays (back when I was a rugby player and actually fairly strong myself) One of the highland games lads drove a tipper wagon and we were doing some clearance work, My workie mates and I got what was basically a fair sized tree and we dragged, pulled and heaved the thing to the side of the tipper, we managed to get it to shoulder height, the three of us were buckling under the thing, sweat pouring, knees trembling with the weight. This one hand comes down from the bed of the tipper grabs a branch and deadlifts the tree off our aching shoulders and pops it into the back of the truck like it was a matchstick, never forgotten that.

I am a highlander so used to see multiple local games every year, you know the event is over when drunk pipers start doing pub crawls while playing. The hammer event is something to watch - from quite far away as there have been incidents over the years. The solid straight handle is harder to control than the hammer you see in normal track and field. Not shown in this video is also tug of war which can be quite brutal as well. Also you say you love the sound of the pipes, then I suggest you look for The Red Hot Chilli Pipers. . .

Don’t know where you are from Dominic, but I can tell you that you are closer to the truth than you think. The “pipes” as they are referred to in Scotland, are actually classified as a weapon. This was because they were used to gather the clans before battle and after the Jacobite uprisings the English band all weapons in Scotland. In order to include the pipes in this ban they were reclassified from instrument to weapon. Another fact, my clan, McNab, were the pipers for the ancient kings of Scotland.

This starts off at the Lonach Gathering in Strathdon, where we see the highlanders going round the arena, having been on the go since early morning marching around the locality. My big brother is one of the highlanders carrying a pike. Guessing it's the first March just after lunch, they all look sober. Robbie Shepherd was commentator there and also at Braemer, where the Queen is presenting the trophy to the winner, Bruce Aitken who is from Auchenblae. Glenfiddich sponsor the heavy events championships and of course Robbie pronounces it correctly.... He's probably had a few on the day.

I will just add to my previous comment. If you ever get chance to go anywhere in Europe. Pack a warm coat and a woolly hat and visit Scotland. It's one of the most beautiful scenic places I've ever been been to. When I used to be a delivery driver for a company and heard they were opening 5 shops in Scotland I lobbied so hard for me to be the delivery driver. Just so I could get paid to go up there every week and look at it. lol... It really is some of the best looking scenery. Don't get me wrong. I'm not scottish, I have no Scottish ancestors (well maybe now I do as our family is Irish, and some could've gone up there haha). Go visit the distilleries It really is something that needs to be scene at least once. ;)

I'm from the northern highlands of Scotland but in the 1990's I lived in the US for 5 years. I was shocked to see that the biggest highland games in the world (at the time) was the Grandfather Mountain highland games in Washington State. There were over 300,000 people there over a single weekend. I did well being an 'actual' Scotsman & had a lot of drinks bought for me. They are really proud of their Scottish heritage and connections, I was humbled by the whole experience. Nowadays there are very few true games left, it used to be local people (which was the whole point) and now it's almost all athletes and semi-professionals. Probably Strathconon Games is one of the last of the originals.

With the hammer throw, in Wales there was a semi-formal law called tŷ un nos (one night house) for a while to prevent squatting, where if you could put a house up in one night on certain areas of public land and have a fire burning in the morning, you could claim the land around it for free, as far as you could throw a hammer or axe from each corner of the house. It was supposed to show if you were fit enough to throw a hammer far you could probably deal with farming that much land, and helped to house the people made homeless by rents and land enclosures. It derived from much older local laws, and makes me wonder if there was a similar tradition in Scotland, and maybe in England before the 'English' came in from Germany, France and Scandinavia.

King John forbade the Scots to have any arms or to train for war in an attempt to subjugate the Highlanders, so the canny Scots turned throwing stones and boulders about. They needed hammers for building, driving fence posts in and of course the blacksmiths need hammers, these were given longer handles. For building up leg and upper body strength, The Highlanders would use these "games" to keep them battle ready. Imagine what strength you need to throw a tree-trunk, 24ft end over end? If you have ever watched Mel Gibson in Braveheart? you will get a feeling of the relationship between the English and Scots

Big man, try a single malt Scotch whisky rather than a low end blend like Cutty Sark, it's rough as a badgers erse. I recommend the Singleton Tailfire, a Speyside single malt from the town of Keith. Add a splash of water which opens up the dram, absolutely marvellous.

Everyone likes Scotch, it's finding one to suit the palatte. Every Scotch is different. Only go for the single malts, with the possible exception of Black Bottle. Cutty Sark is a blend and is awful.

On the note of whisky, you might want to try some single malts. Blended whisky is for the appetite of the modern world, but try some pure single malts (more expensive) and you’ll get a real taste of Scotland.

Great vid as always. Just a little info for you. The Scotts are hard bastards through and through. Years ago when the Scotts soldiers would march for miles in the freezing weather and the rain used to soak into their kilts, drain to the hem and freeze. It would rip their thighs to shreds. But they kept on going. Hard bastards.
