Home schooling is very, very rare anywhere outside the US. It can only happen if your parent or home tutor is a certified teacher at your grade level or above. Kids in Scandinavian countries, plus Netherlands & Belgium, are fluent in English as a second language. Here in Kenya, kids speak their local language to grade 1, add Kiswahili at grade 2, add English at grade 3, and begin either French or German at grade 5 or 6. My kids each spoke six languages fluently by grade 7. BTW, you mention the "old" school building. The school I attended from 8-13 in London was in a building built in 1670. My youngest son's school was founded in 909. (Not 1909, 909!)

Unlike the US, where high school is basically a continuation of primary school, high schools in the Nordic countries (can't speak for the rest of Europe) are more profession oriented. Which means that students basically choose their initial career path in grade 9. Say for instance that you want to work in the transport sector (trucks, bus or taxi), you simply choose a high school that have that program. Or if you want to get into the medical profession, nurse or doctor, then you choose a school with a medical program. These programs are in turn then a foundation for higher learning in collage or university. Also. The reason you didn't see any footage of a classroom is most likely due to it being her next to last day in school. So, no classes. 🙂

If one of your parents or you have another mother's tongue and it's spoken in your home you have the right to be taught that language from kindergarten. The food at their school looks so much like the food at my school in Finland. It is "buffet style" but you are not allowed to take as much as you want. For example, if there are meatballs on the menu, you are allowed to take maybe max. 6 of them? And yes, food is free at school thanks to taxpayers paying for most of it. Free until high school, and relatively cheap in university. At my uni, I paid 1,60 euros or so, but the government paid the rest of it. And of course, that was the normal option, there also is a "better" food option that costs a bit more, maybe 4 euros? I often went for that if the basic option was not that appealing :D

Well I went to a Swedish high school in a small town in the late 1990's and we sure didn't have that kind of a lunch buffet. It was mostly just bland boiled potatoes and some barely cooked sausage, never fried, only boiled sausage. Don't remember any vegetables/salad at all. I was very picky with food back then also so I ate just bread and a bowl of yoghurt with corn flakes that for some reason always was an option. Don't know if things changed in the last 25 years or if I just happened to grow up in a poor town with limited school funding. 😄 Of course we could leave the school on the breaks. I remember in 4 to 6th grade were a class mate lived just next to the school and we sometimes went home to his house and played video games on the longer lunch breaks.

I think the school system in Norway in terms of years and levels. Here at least we have English from the first or second year of primary school and finis your first year of high school. You also have your third language through all of middle school and the first two years of high school (third as well if you don’t have it in middle school). In Norway we also have to learn two different writing systems which is annoying. The Scandinavian countries also usually understand each other in our native languages though some confusion can occur. 😅 The Norwegian school system: Barneskole/primary 1-7 starting the year you turn 6. Ungdomsskole/ middle school 8-9 starting the year you turn 13. Videregående/ high school 1-3 again if you’re going to take higher education or 1-2+ 2 if you some specific lines, starting the year you turn 16.

I would to see a Japanese high school or Chinese high school vs America because specifically Japan ranks very high in many indexes. Also, Sweden is capitalist with more social programs. Similar to what would be a more "left" leaning America. So where our socials programs end, theirs would be more gracious.

In Sweden we don't just go to the closest high school, we apply to the high schools with our grades from "grundskolan" (the mandatory schooling) from ages 6 to 16. Here different schools have different subjects so you apply to one (or more) that have the subject that you want to study so I for example studied bakery. There are 4 schools in all of Stockholm that has that so I had one somewhat close to me, 2 in more central Stockholm and one on the other side of Stockholm so no matter where I got accepted I would have to travel between 1 and 2.5 hours to get to the school, tho for the one that would take 2.5 hours, I would have lived at the school during the week and gone home on the weekends. I luckily got in to the closest one but it was still a little over an hour door to door. But if you want a more basic subject then you can go to most local high schools but for more practical subjects you have to choose that specific school that has it

Europeans have it good but mostly it is America that has it really bad. It is an extremely conservative mindset and that is not helping the students and if they want to show shoulder for example why not let them. Now of course one shouldn't go out a look in a very suggestive manner but letting people express themselves. It is very different with most all everyday things in Europe that are far better than America.
