I first came to know about Greg Davies when I watched a Best of Miriam Margolyes compilation from Graham Norton several videos back. I loved him immediately, and I got BIG recommendations for me to watch Taskmaster in the comments. So many of you said, "Oh- you have to watch Taskmaster," and now here we are! S1 E1 "Melon Buffet" :)

@@DavidvsFilmIf you’re generally unsure, I would recommend starting with series 4-5. The episode counts are longer and the creator regards it as when the show started to truly click. That’s not to say the earlier series are bad, but things are quite different in the early days, not necessarily growing pains, but certainly noticeable.

This show thrives on the dynamic that develops in each season between the contestants and with Greg and Alex and also the dynamic that develops between Greg and Alex across all seasons. And perhaps it's also good to know that Alex is the creator of the show and is basically Greg's boss, so to speak.

Oh no, dear David, I wouldn't advise jumping around. It's the kind of show that you want to follow from task to task, episode to episode... and to follow the rankings. Also, watching episodes - rather than individual tasks - you get to know the participants and you get a lot more comedy. It's an amazing series. And I'm pretty sure every episode for most seasons are available on the official channel (including the New Zealand and Australian versions), and most reactors have no problem uploading edited reactions to YT, if you're worried about ©️

Interesting to note that the entire concept came from Alex Horne, although he plays the character of the subservient assistant. And yes, he's very thorough and seemingly thought of everything. Except of course for some wholly unpredictable scenarios. Really fascinating to watch how different people interpret and approach the tasks, sometimes with strikingly similar methods, others completely from left field. It's chaotic good fun.

One more thing about watching in order. Props and prize task submissions from earlier seasons are used in later seasons, fun little Easter eggs for loyal viewers. Frank's grape scissors have a cameo in the somewhat distant future. Theme props are also starting to be introduced. The big rubber duck in the "Empty the Bath" task. Frozen peas in the next episode. Alex has said in interviews he tries to use props that are reasonably easy to obtain if you want to do your own task.

Definitely watch an entire season from start to finish each time, rather than jump around to random episodes per season. There’s a microcosm being built each season among the contestants that you can’t miss - it’s half the fun of the show, seeing the lore grow each season! Maybe do a poll on the seasons? Fans have certain groups of contestants that stand out most for them for various reasons - if you’re into UK comedy etc then sooo many of the people are already much-loved and getting to see them on TM is the best thing ever 😂 Especially because of the way they interact over the season.

The Taskmaster general format...the first task is always to bring something to impress Greg for the prizes for winning the episode. Then there are usually 3-4 differents tasks away from the stage at the Taskmaster house or other locations then the final task is live at the end of each show. Davies grading point grading system is fantastic, hilarious and definitive and usually is a 5 point scale. At the end of the series the total point are added up for a taskmaster champion. I love Dawn French too! I was influenced in my early teens with the dry humor of the British growing up watching Fawlty Towers...it was one of the only shows in english I could watch when I lived in a small village in Saudi in late 80's.

Subscribed to follow your Taskmaster journey. I’d recommend watching every series in order so you can see how the show evolves. Quick note for this series, Greg and Rosin are really good mates in real life as you’ll see throughout the show. Didn’t see the Graham Norton show so don’t know if you know this already but Alex Horne came up with the show and actually did it first at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before they turned it into a TV show. It was on Dave originally (a pretty small channel) but moved to Channel 4 in 2019 and it’s pretty clear they got a much bigger budget

@@DavidvsFilmTheres definitely a feeling of loss when a cast goes 😢 if you do continue through the seasons, and this is probably another good reason to go chronologically, but they do something called the Champions of Champions, where they get all the winners from the previous 5 seasons to do like a tiny all stars round. At least you get a few faces back for those :’)

Immediately loving Roisin bodes well, I think. Everyone's great but if it was left to the boys it would be a bit more of a straight competition with almost a traditional panel show feel, I do kind of think she sets the tone more than anyone else. This also becomes a show that features more and more women as it goes along and they're almost always the standouts of each season - the holy trinity of Mel Giedroyc, Sally Phillips and Liza Tarbuck are incredible heavy hitters, I do hope you get to experience them
@DavidvsFilm

Thank you so much!! I appreciate the info and the heads-up about them. I really liked Roisin in this first episode because she kind of had more of an attitude and just did her own thing, almost even flighty at times, which I found hilarious. But then I just watched the 2nd episode today, and I noticed in that one she was more serious and competitive, which I also immensely enjoyed. So that just solidified in my mind that I love her in all forms lol

You should definitely watch an entire series start-to-finish, yes! You get to know the cast from beginning to end and relationships evolve along the way. On the other hand I'd argue watching the series in order from 1-16 isn't as crucial, although they do start adding new things to the house so there's progression that way. OMG. Is that a McLovin shirt?😂 That’s amazing! So glad you are finally watching Taskmaster. I started watching it a couple of months ago and I’m obsessed. I’ve been watching seasons out of sequence, based on looking at the casts and seeing who I knew. The only trouble with this method is that it’s starting to get hard to keep track of which seasons I haven’t seen.

Alex Horne, the sidekick, actually created the show and comes up with the ideas for the tasks with his writing team. It was a concept he came up with at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that was developed into the TV show. Also, even though it's spelled (to an American) like "DAY-veez," Greg's last name is pronounced just like "Davis." Same for Alan Davies, whom you will meet much later in Taskmaster (Series 12). Finally, Roisin Conaty pops up on a lot of UK panel shows, like 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, but she also acts. She was on Greg Davies' sitcom Man Down, and recently she had her own show, GameFace, for two seasons on Hulu.

One of my favorite shows that just gets better and better. So glad to see you giving this one a go. New Zealand and Australia versions are also decent, but nothing as good as the good 'ole British original. Sadly, the American version lasted all of ONE DAMN EPISODE!!! We suck! hahaha EDIT - Oh, and another fantastic thing about Taskmaster is learning about all the comedians you may have never heard of. Even though I watch a ton (a ton!) of British shows, I found a lot of really funny people to watch and follow this show :) EDIT 2 - Haha, okay, I just watched you say pretty much the same thing I just said. I guess I should have waited until you were finished watching before making that "edited" comment above. "Sorry mate!" hahaha

Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders are a double act & in the 80s & 90s their show was huge. They made incredible movie spoofs, my favourite was their version of The Silence Of The Lambs, so good! They also worked on solo projects too. Dawn did The Vicar Of Dibley & Jennifer did Absolutely Fabulous and I think you’d love both of those.
@DavidvsFilm
@DavidvsFilm 4 ай бұрын
Holy crap I didn't know they did a spoof of Silence of the Lambs! I definitely need to find that. Honestly I didn't know much about them as French & Saunders, I'd just heard the eponymous title of their act. Vicar of Dibley is on my short list for off-channel watching, and you are 100% right about Ab Fab. That was probably one of THE FIRST British shows I ever watched, and random quotes still come into my head. The other day the server took my plate, and I thought, "Take it away, and bring me another lover."

What makes Greg and Alex's interactions even better is that Alex is the one that came up with the show and comes up with the majority of the tasks, so the scripted jokes at the opening of each episode that are at his expense were mostly written by him.

David...check out Inbetweeners...it is Greg Davies first show where he plays a teacher to h.s. boys in the actual school Greg Davies used to teach in. Greg had a sitcom with him, Roisin Conaty, and Mike Wozniak called 'Man Down.' Ran for a few series, a somewhat exaggerated biography of Davies' pre-comedy days being a teacher and hating it. Worth checking out-- Mike appears as a contestant in one of the later series of Taskmaster, and is someone to look out for.
