Cornish pasties were originally developed as a complete meal in one for miners, who wouldn't have the time to make it to the surface to eat. There are several nasty minerals associated with tin mining, such as arsenic, so the crimped crust was designed to allow the miners to hold the pasty without poisoning themselves. The small piece of crust they held was usually discarded for the same reason.

English muffins are nothing like scones. The cream is a clotted cream, Google it. A cream tea is generally a treat, afternoon tea usually involves sandwiches made with very thin white bread and then cakes accompanied with freshly made tea - served in bone cina cups of course. Pubs also do 'Bar Maels. Shephers pie is basically minced lamb cooked in a thick stew. Lamb is common worlwide - it's delicious, cottage pie is smimilar but wqith beef mince. The fish is Cod or Haddock usually coated in batter, not breacrumbs, the batter is better made with lite beer. Mushy peas (made with special peas) are often used as a substitute for guacamole. Hello Tyler. Nearly every village here in South Wales has a fish & chip shop, also known as a “Chippy”. They rarely have a cafe or restaurant but will have a chippy before everything else. Next will be a Chinese or Indian take away! They may even run a combined establishment. Fish enclosed in batter and deep fried. The batter is designed to totally enclose the fish. The batter allows steam to develop when the fish and batter are fried. The batter allows the fish to be steamed so its not greasy, the batter will be. Good chippys will always sell or give away the batter scraps and make a great addition to the chips. In Scotland you can find chippys selling strange battered foods, battered and deep fried Mars bars, pizza are regular. Cream or jam first is a apparently the difference between a Cornish or Devon cream tea. Really an argument that makes good tourism arguments! Many traditional UK foods were from recipes made when historically we were a poor community. Bits of the carcass of cows, pigs and sheep not usually eaten or sold will be turned into edible delicacies. Real hearty food, ideal cold weather food. What you would call a Convenience Store we would call a Corner Shop. May not always be on the preferred corner (Double frontage) but usually in a terrace, or row, of houses.

The crust on fish and chips is batter. You make the batter by mixing flour, water and a pinch of salt and pepper. Some might also have a bit of beer in the batter (so the batter will be aptly names beer batter). Then you dip the fish in the batter to coat it and then place the fish in the deep fat fryer.

In a restaurant the fish depends on the chef. In a chip shop you can choose between Cod, Plaice and Haddock for the more common meals, but then different chip shops will have various other fish depending what is local to where they are.

The cream teas depends where you’re from. The Devon way is cream then jam and the Cornish way is jam then cream. If you ever visit the UK... you will be delighted by the local fish and chip shop... where a guy stands behind a giant fryer cooking as he serves freshly made foods... displayed in a glass cabinet above the fryer, almost anything cooked in batter and a few local specialities/pies etc. the whole experience is kind of like going into someone's kitchen and having them make you something they are really good at. Top tip, seaside fish & chips are the best... the closer they are to a fishing port the better... and there is something about the salty sea air. Next try the local bakery (everyone raves about Greggs but although they are good it is a big national chain) the local bakery will make all the standard items and a few local specialities too... cakes and pastries, buns and pies. Most now serve hot pies and pasties/sausage rolls etc. for the lunch time shoppers.

Not sure if they did this or not as it wasn't shown in the video, but mostly fish and chips will have salt and malt vinegar lavishly spread all over it. Usually it's fish and chips with some kind of side dish, mainly mushy peas, garden peas, baked beans, curry sauce (I'm northern 😂) The batter on the fish is supposedly to protect the fish during frying and was originally not eaten, but it's bloody lovely, so most of us will destroy it without a second thought.

There is a town in America where pasties are a feature of the local diet and food culture. It's in Minnesota or Wisconsin - somewhere West of Illinois. The tin mining industry was very big there at one time and quite a number of tin miners from Cornwall in England settled there. They brought with them a liking for and a knowledge of how to make Cornish pasties and the local tradition for this unusual food item remains to this day.

Fish and chips is generally Cod or Haddock, but Skate, Rock Salmon also know as Huss, and Plaice is also offered in some areas. The ‘bread’ covering you mention is batter, a flour, egg and water mixture used to coat the fish before frying. Beer batter is also available, with beer being substituted for some of the water resulting in a more aerated batter. The ‘goo in the cup’ is Mushy Peas, peas cooked and allowed to become soft I.e. mushy. Originally more common in the North of England, but now available country wide.

The thing about most iconic British dishes is that they are generally peasant foods refined over centuries. Or more recent dishes, from food rationing during WWII. And it is about making the most out of the limited ingredients you have. Or something different out of the same ingredients, that you've had day in and day out. Because that all you've got. And you don't want to eat slop for the nth day in a row. Compared to America, that's a relative young country, with most of it history having an abundance. And the cuisine reflects that.

For the Tea and Milk question, that depends on how you are making the tea, if it's in a tea pot with leaves you'd put the milk in the cup first, if you're making it in the cup or mug with a teabag you'd put the teabag in first and let it infuse before adding the milk. It's usually either Cod or Haddock you get with fish & Chips, the Cod is more Mid to Southern England, the Haddock is more Scotland, you can also get other types of fish depending on the chippy from the likes of Plaice, Halibut to name a couple.

The usual fish in fish and chips can vary by location, especially if you're near a major fishing port. My father's shop sold Cod, Haddock, Plaice (a flatfish), and sometimes a local fish called 'Huss', which was actually a smaller Nurse Shark, similar to the dogfish. It was later removed from the menu, as it became rare due to overfishing, back in the 1970s. He could also sell 'crackling' which was a bag of the broken-off bits of batter fried along with the fish or battered sausages. It was agreed that this was for people's dogs, as it gave them a lovely shiny coat. Mostly it was the cheapest thing you could buy.

You can definitely get fish and chips in America. I visited San Fransisco and had it in a restaurant on one of the piers (was really good - but no option for curry sauce or mushy peas). I'm not American but potentially places which are near the coast are inclined to offer this as an option. Clam chowder was also very popular in that area... not something I've ever seen in the UK but I don't doubt it gets sold in some restaurants here.

US people regularly refer to things as being "breaded" when there's no breadcrumbs anywhere near the dish. McD's fish fillet is breaded. Fish in fish and chips is battered. Pasties are covered in pastry, not bread. Btw, with scones and clotted cream, in Devon it's cream first and then jam, whereas in Cornwall it's jam first. I find the latter easier to eat. They taste the same.

As someone who works in a chippy (fish and chip shop) I can confirm the stereotype that brits love fish and chips. And most chippies use cod and/or haddock for their fishes. The trick for batter is, you dip the whole thing in batter and then lay it in the fryer for about 3 minutes then it’s ready

We have pies, casseroles, and meat and veg dishes, and all originate from different parts of the UK but can be found almost anywhere in traditional English eating places like Pubs, we also have Gastropubs which are more geared towards food first and drink second and tend to be fancier and cost more. but to the main point their is two "Potato Pies" which is where the potatoes are mashed and put on top of a meat and veg filler and baked 1 - Shepards Pie = Where the meant is from Sheep, 2 - Cottage Pie = Where the meat is from beaf, they both look similar but the flavours can be richer or stronger on the cottage pie, and milder on the Shepards pie, with way perfect wholesome food, as you say comfort food, filling, and differently a go to for the colder months.

Shephard's pie is a very traditional English dish made from lamb mince with peas, onions and carrots. Cottage pie is very similar but instead of lamb it is made with beef. Either of these two I would generally have with beans although some prefer peas or a pea & carrot mix. The traditional fish and chips is generally either cod or haddock that has been deep fried in batter. They are usually served with chips (what you would call steak fries) and there are a choice of accompaniments you can chose from. These come in the form of mushy peas (peas that have been mashed up and seasoned, they include vinegar in the mix), beans, gravy and (my personal favourite) curry sauce. Many people chose to simply have their fish and chips with salt and malt vinegar while others also like to have ketchup, mustard or brown sauce for dipping the chips into. Another traditional sauce you might see served with fish is tartar sauce - a condiment made of mayonnaise, chopped pickles and relish, caper, and herbs such as tarragon and dill.

Right, let's get this cream tea business sorted. In the UK, "tea" means not simply the drink, but a meal in the late afternoon when you need a cup of tea and something to eat. A cream tea means that the something to eat comes with cream. That cream could be whipped cream like you might have on any cake or dessert, or clotted cream, which is very thick rich cream that is produced by a particular process from whole milk. You then need some scones, which are rather similar to a US muffin, and some jam, traditionally strawberry, remembering that jam is British English for what Americans call jelly. Slice your scone horizontally and spread the cut surface with jam and cream. Which order you do this depends on whether you follow the Cornish or Devon practice. Neither is wrong but jam first is definitely less messy.

It is said that for cream tea, in Devon you put the cream on first, in Cornwall the jam first. These are the two counties from which most clotted cream originates and where all the tea shops offer this. I lived in both counties for a short time and I put cream on first even though Cornwall is my favourite county in England. Clotted cream is a thick, unsweetened cream. I have only had it from the West Country (Devon/Cornwall) and in Turkey where they spread kaymak (cream, actually clotted cream) on bread or on a sort of doughnut-type-dough pastry for breakfast with honey or perhaps jam. In a tourist area there might be a tea room in another shop, but it is not common.

Also mushy peas as you would with mash potato, you mash up the peas, on their own its kind of flavourless and would not recommend for most, but if you add the appropriate amount of salt and vinegar to the chips, and when you combine the fish, with ships, and add the mushy peas on the same fork the combination is much more delightful.

A "cream tea" is a sub-set of "afternoon tea". They differ in that the latter also has dainty sandwiches, usually with the crusts cut off (often with delicate fillings to match, such as smoked salmon, cucumber, egg and mustard cress etc.) and slices of cake or small, rather fancy individual cakes. The items for afternoon tea are often presented on a cake stand which consists of two or three medium-sized plates, often of bone china, one above the other, and suspended above each other by a metal stem topped with a handle. Each plate often has a lace-like circular paper liner, commonly called a "doily" on which the food is displayed. The bottom plate might have the sandwiches, the middle plate the scones with the clotted cream and strawberry or raspberry jam and the top plate the cake slices or cakes. A cream tea might come on a cake stand but not usually. The tea itself is "normal" black Indian tea e.g. Assam, Darjeeling, Earl Grey or "English breakfast tea". The tea is always made in a teapot and bone china cups and saucers are not uncommon. In the highest class establishments, the tea will be made with loose-leaf tea and not teabags and a tea strainer,(a small filter akin to a sieve) may be provided to avoid any loose tea leaves being poured into the cup. A small pot of boiling water may also be provided to top up the teapot empties and as the tea becomes stronger during the meal. Afternoon tea at "swanky" hotels can be very expensive. Tea rooms, cafes and even pubswill sometimes have it on their menus.

It is not uncommon for country villages in areas frequented by tourists, cyclists and walkers to have a village shop selling essential groceries which also has either a tearoom attached or an area inside the shop or tables outside where light snacks and drinks can be consumed - a village cafe. Often, freshly baked cakes and scones will be on sale there to accompany teas and coffees.

Shepherds Pie is made with Minced Lamb (shepherds look after sheep and they have lambs). Cottage Pie is very similar and is made with Minced Beef. Fish and Chips is popular here and the most popular options are Cod and Haddock (personally I'm not a fan of haddock). I try and eat this on a Friday with Mushy Peas and Tartare Sauce. The man in the video had Cod. A Cornish Pasty has protected status since 2011 and can only be made in Cornwall and it consists of a pastry normally filled with beef skirt, onion, diced potato and swede (rutabaga). Can be eaten on the go or in cafeterias. It was originally made as a meal for Cornish Miners and there is a hand held part to it which is thick pastry. It's very tasty actually. Afternoon Tea was something introduced in Victorian times and is a treat to most. It consists of some finger sandwiches, some sweet treats the scones, and a pot of fresh tea. In essence this would keep you full till dinner. A cream tea is an afternoon tea consisting of tea, scones, clotted cream (or whipped cream), and strawberry jam. Cream teas are sold in tea rooms throughout England, especially Devon and Cornwall. There are regional variations as to how a cream tea should preferably be eaten. The Devonian, or Devonshire, method is to split the scone in two, cover each half with clotted cream, and then add strawberry jam on top. The Devon method is also commonly used in neighbouring counties. With the Cornish method, the warm 'split' or a 'scone' is first split in two, then spread with strawberry jam, and finally topped with a spoonful of clotted cream. This method is also used elsewhere, notably in London
