There are so many places in the UK that I am very unfamiliar with, so I figured that learning about the 10 best places in the United Kingdom would be a great thing to react to as an American. I am also interested in what exactly it is that makes a place desirable to live at inside of the UK, so hopefully this video can give me an insight into that as well. If you enjoy my reaction feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe for more videos like this!

Pubs aren't like US bars: they're social centres. People go to the pub not just for drinking, but to play games, chat with friends, and even read. Having a decent number of pubs is a reasonable measure for one's social well-being. Pub is short for 'public house' which gives a better sense of what role they fill.

Really? I don’t know anyone who spends much time in pubs. I can’t even remember the last time I went in one. Maybe 30 or 40 years ago, but even then it was the same small group who were in there all the time. My parents and grandparents were publicans, I grew up in pubs, I’d never say they are “the hub of the community”, just a hub for those who have no interest beyond drinking and playing pub games.

Not after this winter. Most pubs (tyat are left) will go out of business due to cost of living, etc. I have to say, I don't think Pubs have been a huge part of our culture for about 30-40 years.. most are very much over it lol. But yes, was the hub of the community pre-1990's.

I grew up in Orkney, and it is an amazing place to live. The reason it’s so affordable is because it’s so remote. Not everyone wants to live that far north - it’s further north than Moscow, and closer to the capital of Norway than the capital of the UK. Orkney has a great deal of Norse heritage, and only became part of Scotland in the late 15th century, and older Orcadians don’t really think of themselves as Scottish or Norse, but a mix of the two (but given that the Norse language ‘Norn’ spoken in the islands died out in the 19th Century, Scotland is definitely the stronger half). Some of the oldest man made buildings in the world are found in Orkney, and the ancient religion which resulted in stone henges being built all over the UK originated in Orkney. It is a beautiful and unique place, and if you visit, I recommend late June or early July, as the weather is nice, and the days are very long (at the end of June, the sun barely dips below the horizon, so you can sit and enjoy the sunset and then the sunrise). Prepare for unpredictable weather though - you can have beautiful warm weather in the morning, and sideways rain in the afternoon. And the pubs… well, I grew up on one of the mid-sized islands, it had a population of around 200 people when I was a teenager, and it had two pubs, so yes, high pub density ;) Pubs are really a bit like community living rooms, with snacks, beer, board games, and dogs.

How are the winters up there? doesn't the darkness and constant storms affect you? or do you just hunker down in a nice cosy house with a lovely fire? 🙂 It's bad enough in the Midlands in winter, but being dark for what 19 hours per day in mid winter?
@maryavatar
@maryavatar Жыл бұрын
@@Drobium77 There is definitely a bit of a hibernation mindset, except for Hogmanay - the Hogmanay celebrations can last for days. The winter weather isn’t as cold as you’d expect, thanks to the warm sea water that comes up on the Atlantic side. Of course, there’s freezing cold water coming down from the Arctic on the North Sea side, so in the winter it tends to be windy with frequent storms. The hardest thing for me was always getting up in the dark - as a kid it was pretty tough that the only daylight hours were spent in school. It’s definitely not a place to live for anyone with Seasonal Affective Disorder. That said, once I was older, I very much enjoyed the dark evenings. And I could enjoy them without fear, thanks to how safe Orkney is. I was very lucky to grow up in a place where girls could wander around alone at night without fear.

He made loads of mistakes in this video. 1, pictures of Bath when talking about Belfast 2, Rutland is Britain's smallest County no Country. 3. Pubs are not like American bars, they're usually the centre of a community where families go to eat. Bars just for drinking usually found in town centres and cities. 4. Yeh he got it wrong he said least instead of most, attractive. 5. Derbyshire dales the southern part of the peak district national park often referred to as the White Peak. The North part being known as the dark peak. Even though Derbyshire is spelt with an E its pronounced dArbyshire with a hard A. And shire is the way Americans pronounce New Hampshire its shur not shiiiiiire. 6. Richmondshire. No such place... its a council (local government authority) that covers 3 quite large towns in North Yorkshire. I've not seen a list of best places to live putting Orkney as number 1. Orkney also very cold very windy very wet and gets dark at 14:30 in the winter. Long sumner days though. Often still light at 23:30 at night

Winchester was once the capital of England, as pronounced by Alfred the Great in 871, around about when the Danes ruled the rest of the country. It’s been occupied since 8,800 BC. It’s also got a very nice, big cathedral with a replica of King Arthur’s round table nailed to a wall, a river running through it with a mill that’s now next to a Pizza Express and a lovely Cornish pasty shop on the high street. Some good art shops, too. And, it’s got quite a good school, too, and trains are fast tracked to London. To live in Winchester and buy a place, you’ve got to earn she’d loads. That’s not the whole city … Jane Austen lived there for a while. Pubs aren’t just drinking places in the UK. They’re a way of life - you meet your friends there, have Sunday lunch, celebrate birthdays, etc.

One thing you need to consider bud is that in the main the train service and the bus service is pretty efficient and reliable in England, to the point that even people in the smaller towns and villages have a regular reliable method of commuting. Also you hit the nail on the head in terms of living in the areas surrounding London, they aren't the cheapest but they are cheaper than living IN London, so you get an easy commute, a cheaper cost of living, safer environment but still earn the higher money by being able to commute to London, also handy for a good night out.

The amount of Pubs is definitely not relevant but the quality of pubs is. A Pub is not just a place to drink copious amounts of alcohol (but on Friday & Saturday nights it probably is). A good Pub will have well kept Beer and most serve good food as well. They are a meeting point for friends and families. Going to the Pub usually consists of a 2 or 3 drinks and a meal, with the exception of the aforementioned Friday and Saturday nights. In many villages the Pub is the hub of village life. My Village Pub has a Darts Team, a Tug-O-War Team, a Football Team, a monthly Quiz Night and weekly food themes (this week is Thai Food).

Just to put the "Pub" in context from a British view - every single house I have ever bought/rented or stayed on holiday at has been ultimately determined by it's proximity to a decent pub, - & I am not alone..... the Pub is the social hub of the local community.... when the village pub closes down, the village life dies!

Hey Bud, I was born and raised in the Port Town of Dover, Kent in the South East of England. Dover is the closet point in the UK to France at 22 miles and is 20 minutes away from the entrance to the channel tunnel to the west at Cheriton, Folkestone which is the next town over from Dover. On a clear day sunny day you can sit on the top of Langdon Cliffs (the iconic WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER) and see the French coast but my favourite view is one at that cannot be seen from ANYWHERE else in the UK has to be sitting on the clifftop after dark on a clear night and watch the headlights of the cars as they travel along following as it goes inland and then back again the meandering route of the coastal roads of France. Another favourite thing of mine is to sit on the cliffs and watch thunderstorms come across the channel from Europe, they're like a black curtain coming across. If there's lightning, you can sometimes see the bolt hit the water and skip across it like skipping a stone, it sometimes hits cross channel ferries as well. When this happens it'll temporarily trip the lights and the ferry goes dark, then you see all the lights flicker back into life. We also have Dover castle which Hitler wanted to use as his headquarters if the nazis had taken over during world war two as it has panoramic views of the English channel. STAY SAFE my friend 🙏😎👍

There is no physical boarder between the Republic and Northern Ireland. You usually only realise you have crossed it because the road signs and markings are different. People crisscross the border for work, shopping etc. all the time. There are over 200 roads that cross the border, in some places the same road, leading from one town to another in the Republic actually cuts across parts of Northern Ireland.

The ability to commute by train to London for work every day has a massive effect on house prices. Chelmsford is a 35 minute train ride to London with an annual unlimited season ticket. Which is currently £4,480 per year. You have to distinguish between places to live to work, and places to live/retire. Many leave the family in a better place to live, while working away during the week. Also many of the best remote places to live are now dominated by people buying second homes. So they are "empty" during the "off season". Which pushes up house prices, so the locals can no longer afford to live there.

millions of Brits living outside London commute to work there every day. A season ticket for £3000 pounds can be used as often as you like for a year. Fun bit of trivia Rutland is the smallest COUNTY but at high tide the Isle of Wight is smaller. As for pubs, pubs are the heart of the community, many a wife knew where her husband was and would call the pub to tell him to get his ass home, as he was late lol, but they are also where everyone gets to meet and many used to raise money for local charities etc. The one in the village I grew up in used to have raffles etc to raise money so the kids could go out on day trips etc as many couldn't afford to otherwise. It's not like it so much now, but pubs are still the centre of many communities, and that's why we love them.

Why do we have all the cool architecture... because we don't tear everything down and rebuild every 25-50 years The cost of the train ticket into London is expensive in my book, our trains are overpriced, HOWEVER, because of the cost of living in London, many jobs have what is called "London weighting" which means that you get paid extra because London is so expensive, and this extra money could very well more than cover the cost of that ticket. Yes pups are an important metric, we have a pub culture in the uk... going to the pub is not about getting drunk (Well it can be), it is a social thing. Northern Ireland does have the advantage over the rest of the UK that it was not as badly affected by Brexit as the rest of the UK because of the Good Friday peace Agreement, which means that there is a seamless border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. So yes people can travel freely between them, but also trade... which means that Northern Ireland as seamless trade with the EU as a whole, the rest of the UK does not have that benefit. I think the guy misspoke. Rutland is a ceremonial County and it's political designation is as a Unitary Authority... A unitary authority is a form of local government has the powers of both a County Council and District Council in one. The downside to the Orkneys is that it is remote (by UK standards) and because it is very far North, while on the plus side is very long days in summer (18 hours), the days in winter are very short (6 hours).

M25 - don’t go there. It’ll do your head in on most days. Season tickets - you can get a loan from your employer for an annual train season ticket usually. Houses are much cheaper outside London but you get an extra salary - the inner or outer London weighting - for being employed in London and incurring additional expenses, as items in London are more expensive than elsewhere.

Richmond is in Richmondshire which, in turn, is in North Yorkshire. The name 'Richmondshire' has existed since the Middle Ages and the local government district of Richmondshire referred to by the narrator was created in 1974, though it is due to be absorbed into a unitary authority covering the whole of North Yorkshire next year, so I read. Not all 'shires' are counties e.g. Hexhamshire (once a county but no longer) and some have never been e.g. the former Tynemouthshire. Some were exclaves of other counties e.g. Bedlingtonshire, Norhamshire, Islandshire (all now in Northumberland) and Craikshire (now in North Yorkshire) which were part of County Durham until the 19th century.

For people travelling to London to work, we pay a lot of money each day for travelling. It can be about 40-45 USD to travel just 30 minutes to get to London and use the underground then get home, as we are travelling 'peak' hours to get to work. Travelling to large towns outside of 'peak' travel Monday to Friday means that your travel is cheaper, often if you leave by train after 9.30am it will be half price. It's best for tourists to avoid travelling around 8-9am in the morning too, as us workers are are trying to get to work :0) Most people don't need to travel into London from Monday through to Friday to work any more, as most people in offices are working hybrid. St Albans is just a few miles away from where I grew up, and is an old roman city. More pubs per head in this city than any other English city, from what I understand. It's very historic and the cathedral is beautiful.

£3,500 is about $4,400 - it is expensive, yes, but it’s for commuters travelling into London for work and lots of places in the commuter belts around the south-east of England pay much more than that for their daily commute into London. Derbyshire is pronounced like Darbysher'. The letter 'r' is usually pronounced much more softly in English, when compared to US English pronunciation. So '-shire' is an unstressed syllable, and is almost '-shuh' or '-sher'. You also have to know about short and long vowel lengths. Short vowels have become almost forgotten by US English speakers. Furthermore, many village, town, city and county place names have quirks in pronunciation that are of numerous to go into here. I'll just mention a few county names: Most county names are stressed on the first syllable. 'Derbyshire' has a stressed first syllable with the 'e' becoming an 'a', and the other two syllables are unstressed and shortened,:as shown above.. Yorkshire becomes 'Yorksher', Lincolnshire becomes 'Linkunsher', Nottinghamshire becomes 'Nottingumsher', Leicestershire becomes 'Lestersher', Worcestershire becomes 'Wustersher' and Warwickshire becomes 'Worricksher'. All very different to place names with similar spellings in the USA.

Yes, pubs are very important to British people - however, we are not all alcoholics. You will find more people out on Fridays and Saturdays, pubs sometimes have live music or a DJ, it's a place for you to go and have a nice time. Sunday afternoons, pubs are more like american bars, we will have sports on the TVs in the pub and have a few drinks. We have a very focused pub culture, it is a place we go to just relax and hang out, after a bit of retail therapy, you may stop off for a drink or two with a friend. It's just what we do. We often have a 'local' - a pub that is close to where we live.
