I have certainly learned a lot about the British Empire and England in particular, so I think it is about time to take a closer look at the History of Scotland. Americans are certainly aware of Scottish culture, but no where close to the extent that they are with English culture. With that being said I am very excited to react and learn about the history of Scotland from an America's perspective. If you enjoy my reaction feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe for more videos like this!

Your basic mistake was to review Scottish history from this video. Perhaps the most important omission was no mention of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 & the later Claim of Right. Also the fact that the majority of the population opposed the Treaty of Union in 1707. The Enlightenment did not come north from England but spread south from Edinburgh.

Not quite up to date... There was a referendum on Scottish independence in 2014, which the "No" vote won by 55.3% to 44.7%. One of the selling points of the "No" campaign was that if Scotland won independence then they would have to reapply to join the European Union as a new nation and that process could take years. But what happened then was that an overconfident British Prime Minister (Cameron) thought he could quell the annoying anti-EU faction in his party by holding and winning a UK referendum in 2016 on EU membership... and promptly lost it. Despite Scotland overwhelmingly voting to stay in the EU, they ended up being dragged out of it anyway, with the UK parliament claiming back from the EU powers for themselves that in many cases should have been devolved back to Scotland. Many Scots, feeling more sympathetic to European values than English ones, feel rightly aggrieved by this EU bait and switch, and are hoping to hold another independence referendum in the near future - though currently the UK government is saying "you had your chance in 2014, so you're not getting another anytime soon". And so it continues.

Adam Smith basically invented economics. His core thesis is that the value of an economy is not how much gold the country has but work - basically it's people and the work they do that creates wealth. It is how we measure wealth of countries today: GDP - basically the total income of everyone in the country, not how much gold or silver or diamond the king/banks have. And yes, he was Scottish.

Adam Smith is the father of economics, he literally changed the world. One of the top people during the Scottish age of enlightenment that changed the entire world. The Scottish age of enlightenment put an end to the elites telling the poor they cannot be doctors, lawyers ect (worldwide) and that no matter who you are or how poor you are if you have an education you can become a doctor or a lawyer. After that the poor also became the rich elites. The American dream began in Scotland 100 years earlier, Scots were living the Scottish dream before anyone else but the rest of the UK elites were totally against educating the poor because they knew what it meant, it was only after Britain almost became bankrupt that the Scottish enlightenment people went to London and demanded they educate the population. I have never heard such an inaccurate, and just plain wrong account of Scottish History. Just one of many misconceptions, the Jacobite rebellions had nothing to do with Scottish Independence, most Scots did not want anything to do with the Jacobites, and many fought against them. As a Scot, Braveheart was historical b*llshit. Watch Outlaw King, a little more accurate. English and Scottish royals had a pretty good relationship until King Alexander III died in 1286 and Scotland plunged in a power struggle / civil war. Edward I of England was invited by Scottish nobles to become a temporary ruler and Edward imposed Scottish noble (puppet) John De Balliol as king, but the Scottish nobles and eventually Balliol didnt play ball with Edward and a several year conflict started set off in the Scottish low lands resulting in Balliol being locked up, Edward II losing the war against the new Scotltish King Robert de Bruce. Throughout the centuries theres been some minor skirmishes along the border, but the two nations were unified in the 16th century under the Scottish King James I after Elizabeth I died without an child to the throne.

He totally got the Union wrong. England was worried about an invasion by France on its northern border & offered to pay off Scotland's debt (Scotland was bankrupt from the Darien misadventure, a failed attempt by Scotland to colonize Panama), give Scotland access to England's colonies, markets, ports & navy, and allow the Scots to keep their own legal system & Presbyterian faith, in exchange for England being able to use its navy to patrol the entire island of Great Britain. It is this Union that marked the beginning of the transition of Scotland from a poor nation to a very wealthy one, using the capital they gleaned from colonialism & slavery to kickstart their own industrial revolution, which made them an industrial powerhouse.

We're not really taught about it in school, if I'm remembering correctly, I think the act of union is covered and we're aware we've had conflicts with each other before that, but everything else sort of goes into "british" history where it includes the whole of the UK or english history were its just about england, so we have to go out of our way to learn about Scottish history, unfortently a lot of us don't do that. As someone from england, I thankfully did look into their history as I was curious and it didn't seem right to me not to know our neighbours histories however I am often surprised at how many english just don't bother looking into even some basic facts about Scotland for example my parents didn't know the national animal of a Scotland was a Unicorn until recently when they were watching a programme. I can understand not knowing certain things due to it not coming up but the unicorn as a symbol is often seen, even in England and its even on our british passports, like what? My parents are well traveled and if they weren't aware of that, I do question what majority of england isn't aware of. However I do disagree about despising the french, I think its more like a joke here in england, we like to pretend we hate them because of all the conflicts our countries have had but we really don't. Or I have never met an english person who seriously hates the french. They'll be a lot of jokes and making fun of the french but it's not any real hate.

Scotland has some of the best warriors on the planet, while being short arses. Pretty much every battle they won against the English (who were a massive super power at the time) the Scots were outnumbered out equipped etc. same with nearly all the battles they lost. Also the amount of Scots in the SAS for such a small population is very impressive. Also they were the only army in history to make the schiltron work and the only people the vikings were scared of (well probably weary of as they were pretty damn fearless.)

I agree with most of what you say, however the Flemish peasants used the Schiltrom successfully in a revolt against the French a few years prior to Bannockburn. So very likely that one of our clever clogs noted this and introduced it as a strategy to face the English knights. Edward Bruce most likely. Bannockburn was the first time an army of peasants (in the main) defeated an army of knights and men at arms, on that kind of scale. The repercussions of which spread from England accross Europe and was a contributory factor in many revolts against the ruling classes. All of a sudden they were no longer invincible.

Just a historical note, or 2. The Picts were massive, very tall and powerful. WW1 the size of the average British soldier was only 5ft 2inches according to official war office figures. Except the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who's average height was 5ft 10 inches. These stats vary depending upon source, however I found this fascinating and did some digging and the above stats are pretty accurate. There is a long standing debate around why the population of Scotland reduced in height so dramatically over the years. Perhaps industrialisation and a mix of Celts/Britons etc. So not always short arses 😂

"Braveheart" is about 98% pure fiction. As mentioned the blue warpaint was 1000 years out of date. Tartan hadn't been invented for another 500 years after the 1300s. William Wallace was a Norman noble who was rumoured to have been a mercenary in the English army in his teens. The "Primae Noctis" law definitely didn't exist and extreme cultural and historical liberties were taken. The historical advisor on the production team quit and refused to have his name on the credits of the film. He actually did that. That's how divorced from historical reality "Braveheart" is.

It could do. The Scottish government is trying to push for another independence referendum, and that's one of the justifications they having it so soon after the last one (it was supposed to be "once in a generation"). Obviously it will affect how Scottish people feel about remaining in the UK vs independence. It's not necessarily safe to assume it will only sway people towards independence though. Breaking away from the UK is an even bigger undertaking than leaving the EU, so some people may be put off after seeing what a shitshow Brexit was.

The film Braveheart was about as realistic as Shrek. I don't think we hate each other, that's too strong, it's more sibling relationship. By the way, we didn't 'take over' Scotland, they asked us to help out when they went bankrupt over some failed American adventures, and in 1707 there was an 'Act of Union'. The Norman 'ideas' he quotes also apply to England. The English language for example is an agglomeration of Roman, Medieval High German, Norman French and a smattering of Brythonic/Celtic stirred into the mix plus some words from the languages of our colonies during Empire days.

Come and visit anytime, I love sharing my special places with others who are interested...! Unfortunately, any notion that our Kingdom is poetically united is little more than that, because the English Institutions have been both socialised and educated throughout our long history as neighbours - that they are a superior race... and so, try as some of them might to think of us as equals, their capability is restricted so that it is Impossible for them to not think of us as anything other than a little less than themselves! And so they patronise constantly, and try to impose their values upon us, when they're often unsuited to us...! For centuries, Scotland has four universities - St Andrews (founded in 1411), Edinburgh (1450), Glasgow (1451) and Aberdeen (1482); while England had only Oxford and Cambridge...! So yes, it has long been a seat of learning. There are now 12 universities in Scotland - to whose residents all education is Complety free of charge! ,

a battle that was key in Robert the Bruce's campaign was the battle of Byland and seems to be relatively unknown about. It was fought around Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire near where I live. Robert the Bruce's victory here led to the peace treaty being signed. It is worth looking at. Edward was forced to agree to a thirteen year truce with the Scots which then led to the formal Treaty of Edinburgh/Northampton in 1328. The memorial was last year which I went to. Quoting from a BBC article: "A memorial is set to be unveiled to mark the 700th anniversary of a battle which saw King Edward II defeated by the army of Robert the Bruce. The Battle of Byland, dubbed "Yorkshire's forgotten conflict", was fought at Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire, according to a study. The memorial will be unveiled by Adam Bruce, a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce. The Battle of Byland, which took place on 14 October 1322 between the forces of Edward II and Robert the Bruce, was one of the key conflicts during the Scottish Wars of Independence."

You asked about the Auld Alliance between France and Scotland. I guess the modern manifestation of that is the Majority of Scots voted to stay in the EU but the majority of English and Welsh didn't so we were dragged out against our wishes. Bagpipes and kilts and clan tartan originated as window dressing in regency times. Highlanders wore a pleated plaid garment which resembles a kilt.but the modern kilt is a highly simplified version. Another thing Braveheart gets wrong (and it gets so much wrong) is it shows the Scots in skirts when both sides wore trousers. The face paint was hundreds of tears out of date and the kilts were from hundreds of years in the future. But if you come to Scotland you do hear pipes and see people in kilts now. It's not just a tourist thing.

Scots formed the core of what became the USA. In the fight for Independence, an English colonel said in dispatches "This is not a revolution of Americans but an uprising of the Scots Irish" The Scots Irish were mainly Presbyterians dislodged from lowland and border Scotland who settled in Ireland and were in constant war with their Catholic Irish neighbours who they had displaced. When they subsequently emigrated to America they were already well-versed in military matters a ready made army if you like. At the same time the various clearances in Scotland drove the Highlanders to America but they by and large remained true to the English crown and fought for them. After Yorktown these "rebels" were offered citizenship without reprisal but most rejected the offer and left for Canada. Of the fifty-six Signatories of the Declaration of Independence, 19 were of Scottish ancestry, 32 presidents of the United States lay claim to having some Scottish heritage. There are literally hundreds of towns, villages, cities and place names across the USA that are derived from Scottish place names eg Dallas a village in the Moray in the Scottish Highlands or Houston in Renfrewshire

Hate is not too strong a word. We're completely disenfranchised (numbers mean England gets what it wants all the time). Dragged into a union we didn't want, used to trial anthrax experiments during WWII, used to trial the poll tax (and so break, again, the Act of Union which promised all parts of the UK would be taxed the same), used as a place to test how safe nuclear power was (build the first nuclear power station at Dounreay as far from SE England as possible), ignore the stated will of Scots through the ballot box and drag us out of the EU because England wanted out (stupid decision they're paying for now), Base the UK's nuclear submarines on the Clyde (as it would be an obvious nuclear target during the Cold War), etc.

Scotland is called *Alba* in their native Celtic Gaelic language. Wales, Ireland they both have native names because they have native languages beside English. Scotland -> *Alba* 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Wales -> *Cymru* 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Ireland -> *Éire* 🇮🇪 England -> *Anglia* 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 When the Saxons🇩🇪 invaded Anglia and they mixed creating the today’s Anglo-Saxon = English nation they got names for all the nearby people. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Cymru became Wales From the proto-Germanic term *Walhaz* meaning something like “the foreign grain” “the others” meaning their Celtic origin! They weren’t like them (Anglo-Saxons). 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Alba became Scotland From the Hellenic term σκότος/skòtos or σκωτία/skotía which means darkness/ non shinny place. And Alba should properly be pronounced something between Alaba/Aluba as it's a Gaelic word and that's how it is pronounced in Gaelic (Which in turn is pronounced with a short 'a' like Guard, not a long a like Gay). Gàidhlig.

There's a Scot named Bruce Fummey who has an interesting series of KZfaq videos on Scots history. Look up a few of those. Scots founded my hometown (Hamilton, Canada); an early Scots Upper Canada governor's villa, built in Hamilton in 1832 and now preserved as a museum, is two minutes walk from my house (which is on part of the old estate). Even here in North America the Scots have an interesting history. A single American example is the famous Starrucca Viaduct rail bridge, designed by a Scots civil engineer. BTW the eggs are Scotch, the people are Scots or Scottish...no idea why!

After 1746 the Highlands were basically cleared of people in what today would be called ethnic cleansing. The wearing of tartan was forbidden and Gàidhlig was increasingly replaced with English. Native speakers of Gàidhlig were punished at school for speaking their own language. In the Lowlands the Scots language was (and still is to large extent) viewed by some as slang or a lesser language than English when as a language it developed separately from English from the 1300s

I’m from Alt Clut (which means Rock on the River - Google Dumbarton Rock & Castle for an explanation - and Clut, the word for ‘river’ is where the River Clyde gets its name. Alt Clut became Dun Breatann which became Dumbarton. Contrary to what this says, Scotland has been inhabited for a lot more than two thousand years and it’s also important to note many of the errors made: The Picts were the original inhabitants as far as is now and preceded the Celts/Gaels. It is, however, almost certain that the Picts (the name the Romans gave them, meaning ‘The Painted Ones’ as, in battle, the Picts fought naked covered in a blue dye called Woad) and the Celts were distantly related. The Celts were able to settle land very quickly, which suggests rather than war, the Celts and Picts intermingled and intermarried. The Roman invasion, which by coincidence Dumbarton was one of its first stops in the land war f the Attecotti, a client tribe of the Caledonii, and they built a fort. The Romans got as far north as Aberdeen and were hugely successful, defeated a joint Celtic & Pictish army at the battle of Grampua Mons. However, unable to grow any of the crops they were used and with the huge difference in sunset between summer (if you go far enough north, the sky will never get fully dark) and winter (sunset can be as early as 4pm), the Romans struggled hugely and left of their own volition. Hadrians Wall was merely set up as a barrier to the edge of the Roman Empire as it wasn’t big enough to hold anyone back and Picts regularly climbed the wall and raised the Roman settlements. In fact, one Pict raid got all the way to Londinium (London) and stole an absolute load of gold

Scotland is very much a country divided on so many levels but mainly politically ( religion is a massive issue too but that is too deep to go into ). As we stand today its a 50/50 split with the population of who want to break free of the UK and become totally independent or to stay in the UK.....on another interesting note Scotland voted to stay in the EU but because England has a far bigger population the Scottish vote didnt have much influence on the outcome of brexit...which has swung more Scots to Independence again and the clock is ticking because i think its only a matter of time when Scotland will leave the UK
