Japanese designer, french company, American engine. And Tada... GTbyCitroën The engine chosen (rather than creating a new one from scratch) is the Ford Triton 5.4L V8 Takumi Yamamoto presents the project to Jean-Pierre Ploué, Citroën style director. He was immediately convinced by this new idea, so much so that Citroën agreed to build the car in real life to present it to the public. Kazunori Yamauchi , designer of the game Gran Turismo, is also very excited about this idea. He even explains, in an interview conducted at the Paris Motor Show, that he is realizing one of his dreams, that of making the most real cars possible, and of having the opportunity to design one of his cars in true with a car manufacturer.

Citroen's most high end car was the SM, with the Maserati V6. It was a real Gran Turismo, not particularly fast allthough by far the fastest FWD of it's day and many days later, but a full four seater to cross the continent fast and in comfort. It was in the Porsche 911 price range, which was still a small light sportscar back then and not supercar class, but very popular with the rich and famous, sheiks and shahs because it was very special, far better at what it did good than any competitor. There was a rally special of the BX, but that had little to do with the regular BX. It made quick small hatchbacks too but Citroen excelled at handling in comfortable cars, and handling on very bad roads, not at handling for maximum speed, in that it was just one of many.

It appears in GT 5 Prologue and all the games after that. Some other major companies have now also created similar concept cars for the game. These include Mercedes, BMW, VW, Mitsubishi to name a few. Dodge created the Tomahawk SVT and in the game it has 2,586 hp (943ft-lb of Torque). A totally bonkers car to try and drive.

hi dude ! as a native and still resident German I'm much closer to France than you are. BUT ! I've never ever seen this car live right in front of me. To me it looks like the Citroën company had got rid of it's "childhood shoes" and now constructs a car being worth to be recognized. I'm waiting to see this in action ! it is Klingon like design 🙂

That black car, in front of the white one, is the Citroen Survolt. A 2010 concept. Bugatti Chiron was launched in 2016. 😉 The white one, GTbyCitroen it was actually a collaboration between Citroen and Gran Turismo developers Polyphony Digital. It was one of the first examples of a car being designed for a game and then being physically made afterwards, as motor show eye candy.

Citroën often have fully driveable concepts. Latest is the Oli. Very different and very Citroën, worth a look.

For other Citroën supercars, the SM is the first that comes to mind. It has the looks, but not the engine, as it was a Maserati 8 cylinder with 2 cylinders chopped off. Regretably, they didn't change the firing order after that, meaning it is ill-balanced within the car, which makes its power delivery and handling much diminished from what might have been. Citroën rally cars were more successful, especially the Xsara and then C4 cars that Sebastien Loeb drove to the world championship. They had little to do with their production car "equivalents", though. Still, the top of the line ZX VTS, and Xsara VTS, and to a lesser degree the C4 VTS really danced with the best hot hatchbacks, like a high output Civic VTEC or a Golf GTI. #fastCitroëns

One of the greatest Group B rally racers was the Peugeot 205 T16, you should watch a video on that one. Then check out the Peugeot Quasar concept - Peugeot were gonna make a little tiny supercar based on the 205 T16, it would have been brilliant.

The "Vision Gran Turismo" cars are really incredible Some are really close to production vehicles (The Bugatti VGT is almost pre-production Chiron) and some are completely out of this world (like the Chaparral 2X VGT with its laser powered turbine and its "head first" cockpit)

There were quite a few of these concept cars made by various manufacturers for the GT games.

By the way. @IWrocker if you like strange or unusual European cars, check out these ones: - The Renault Turbo 5. It was a derivative of the Renault 5 mini (which you knew in the US as "Le Car", and you probably don't regret not having it any more!). But this version was mid-engined, RWD and turbocharged (in the 1970s...). It had only 150bhp, but with a weight well under 1 metric tonne it was actually faster than the Ferraris and Porsches of the time. Renault did it again in the early 2000s with the Clio V6. This time, they took out the rear seats of the Clio supermini and put in a transversally mounted V6 instead, that produced around 250bhp. This car was heavier, clumsier and not quite as accomplished as the original Turbo 5, but on TopGear in the hands of The Stig this supermini clocked the same time around the track as the Aston Martin Vanquish! - For more Renault madness, there is the Espace F1. Yes, they really put an actual Formula 1 engine in an MPV... - The Skoda 105/120 (since you mentioned being also interested in the history of Skoda). It's a line of affordable "people's cars" from the communist era Czechoslovakia. Often mocked and laughed at in the West, those cars were certainly not something that one would want to drive today, but their design and engineering approach were far more fascinating and unconventional than people realise. - Also from communist Czechoslovakia, there were the Tatra 603 and 613 luxury limousines, powered by rear mounted, air-cooled V8s. By the end of production around 1990 the 613 reached a power output of 300bhp and that probably makes it the only thing one could legitimately consider a communist muscle car :D The history of Tatra is another thing altogether that no motorhead should miss. There is in fact a direct connection between Tatra and... today's Porsche 911.

You should check out the Citroën Méhari and the more modern "successor" (loosely) the Citroën C4 Cactus, as examples of the crazy off road capable FWD cars that Citroën has created. Citroën Is known for pushing boundaries and innovation in both styling and tech with a goal of making cars more comfortable and enjoyable, The designs often seem outlandish and weird but often those ideas are adopted by the rest of the industry. Just think how outlandish front wheel drive and monocoque body must have seemed for a production car in 1934, it's pretty common now, but even in the 1970's it wasn't.

And when you remember that actually Bugatti is a French brand as well :p You should check the Citroën OLI as well.

There are a few stunning french cars even today, look at the latest Peugeot 508, or the Renault Laguna Coupé that I'm lucky enough to own because it's rare. These are stunning cars! And they're not protos. But not supercars either. As far as I know no French car maker except Bugatti (owned by Volkswagen) has made a production ready supercar. Though they made a lot of race cars. Unfortunately French car makers don't realize that this kind of cars is great for the image of a brand. They're, as you said, way too corporate. So this kind of cars are way too rare in France.

That's a usual progress for a French manufacturer. 1 Build awesome rally and racing cars 2 use your racing expertise to build awesome prototypes and supercars. 3 sell exclusively extreme strange minivans and hybrid crossover to people.

You also need to check Citroen Survolt. It sounds like a jet plane. Btw, Citroen is making prototypes which are mostly full functional.

Well, if you want some seriously unhinged car project, have a look at the "1000tipla" made by Vilbrequin.

I am not the bigest fan of Citoen, but you have to admit that over the year they did some really good stuff. Putting a concept car on the road (so street legal) is great. In my opinion it looks awsome as hell ! Of course the Bugatti Veron, Chiron is faster but by just the looks, I think this is more impressive and it whas back in the days when bugatti where developping their car (the Veron). Take a look at the 19 million dollar bugatti hehe (not a joke). But being multiple time in a citroen, I will say it is (no matter the model) the most comfortable car I have been in (because of the suspention they use)

The Citreon GT was created for the Grand Tourismo video game. The drivable model was a concept created in about 2008 or 2009. It was powered by a Ford modular V8 engine. That car is one of the greatest vehicles ever created. Citroen simply just wasn't bold enough to build that car.

Supercar Blondie has done a video on this car where she shows the interior and drives it (slowly). Good video if you want to see more. Another special car to find out about is the Gillet Vertigo. A Belgian car that is built in very limited numbers, it sounds truly amazing and is fast. It won many races in its day. It also was in Gran Turismo 3 or 4. King albert the second of belgium has one by the way. Imagine him driving that thing around at 89 years old. :)

Back in the late 60's into the 70's Citroen owned Maserati so there was a certain amount of sharing of design, engines, and parts etc. I think they also had control or partial control of Ligier sports car company too. Perhaps you should check out the Renault Avantime and Matra cars too.

We saw this at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2010. We've been going for the past 16 years and this is still one of my favourite cars to have seen at the FOS. One of my other FOS favs which now appears every year since being restored, is the 1911 Fiat S76 a 28.4-litre 4-Cylinder otherwise known as The Beast Of Turin. An absolutely awesome beast of a car, aptly named. It literally spits out fire and you can hear it coming above everything else. This year's festival is a week today. Can't wait. You should check out the SAAB Aero X concept car from 2006 too. For some reason this reminded me of it. One of my friends used to refer to SAAB as Sweden's Citroen'.

If you like exotic, rare or unusual cars, you should get acquainted with: ‘KTM X-BOW GT-XR’ , ‘Lister Storm’ , ‘Praga Bohema’ or ‘Tatra MTX V8’.

I think it's the Citroen Vision for Gran Turismo. Citroen, Peugeot and Renault have some cool concepts, but that's where they stop, currently I think Renault has the better looking cars out of the 3.

My personal feeling is the sides are inspired by Bugatti, the cockpit is definitely more akin to Koenigsegg and the front looks like it is just trying to snort those lines infront of it with those wide flares to the side.

They probably would have a modified Ford engine, it wouldn't be the first time The HDi is essentially a Ford Duratorq except built right The story goes Ford made a diesel engine called the Duratorq in an attempt to bring small diesel family cars to America. In good Ford fashion they half-assed a build they had no confidence in and of course it failed, sending home the last nail in the domestic diesel coffin PSA (Peugeot/ Citroën) found the Duratorq and asked Ford if they could have it. Ford said "Sure, why not, it's a lemon anyway" and PSA built it properly without cutting corners and the HDi was born. The HDi was a success (especially the twin cam) and Ford asked for it back, PSA said "Sure, why not, it's a peach now" and the Duratorq II was born (too late for American diesel family hatchbacks). Basically the same as the Rover V8 story, except PSA instead of Rover and Ford instead of Buick and with the added twist at the end where Ford saved face by getting involved again and claiming it was 'developed together' Given LEV laws if the Citroën GTs were still made today they would probably run a 3.0 L, 24-valve DOHC biturbo V6 e-HDi & electric hybrid setup
