The fat fighters sketches weren't about making fun of the members. They were all about how awful, rude & uncouth the hostess is. Other sketches show how much of a hypocrit she is and over time her behaviour starts backfiring on her

Yeah it’s making fun of the Weight Watchers ladies in the U.K., who are supposed to help people’s confidence but are notoriously bitchy. Miranda Hart makes fun of them in her show too.

I think the biggest difference between the USA understanding and the British understanding of humour is the target. In the USA people laugh at the the target of the funnies, in the UK we laugh at the perpetrating character. That explains why the Brits can find humour in people being made fun of because we are laughing at the parody of the person doing the insulting, not the people being insulted.

Exactly. If you look at British comedy characters like David Brent in the Office, Basil Fawlty, Alan Partridge, Blackadder, Hyacinth Bucket etc. They aren’t the heroes of the show, they’re often not particularly nice people at times that we laugh at. Like when Brent in the Office tells a mildly racist joke at an office party. It’s not the joke that’s funny. It’s Brent’s reaction to black guy over hearing, and Brent’s reaction to getting told off by the boss for it. Or like the Jobseeker lady in League of Gentlemen. Who makes fun of unemployed people. We don’t laugh at her making fun of them. We laugh when she gets her comeuppance and is humiliated for being a bully.

What is so wrong with the emasculation of British comedy. And, when I was over there I have a feeling the Brits themselves probably agree. So many men go around calling each other by the "c" word (for vagina). Which in my estimation is essentially correct. But, hey, if the Brits love "taking the piss" out of each other, why can't a yank join in. Because, we're stoopid?!?! Some people have no sense of humor/humour.

Little Britain falls into the same category as Family Guy, where the writers are (usually) poking fun at the cruel person stereotype more than the cruelty itself. For example, Marjorie Dawes, the FatFighters leader, is mocked for her hypocrisy, tearing other people down for being fat as a defence mechanism, since she is the truly ugly person there (both inside and out). It's also commenting on diet culture itself, and suggesting that weight-watcher groups and fad diets ultimately profit off prolonging the agony of its patrons.

The parody was of Dennis Waterman, who was famous from The Sweeney and Minder as a tough-guy actor in the 70s and 80s, but when the Little Britain guys met him at a function they were surprised at how short and polite he was.... hence the parody. He also wrote and sang the theme tune to a good few of his shows (including Minder), hence the catchphrase. If you want to binge a good UK show by the way, Minder was superb... funny and dramatic and Waterman's character was a true hero.

Dafydd, 'The only Gay in the Village' reminds me of a guy I knew at uni. One night in his final year a big group of about 20 of us were in the pub and he stood up and asked us all to be quiet as he had a big announcement to make. He said it was something that might shock us and he expected that some people wouldn't want to associate with him anymore. At which point he came out as gay. We were all a bit bemused and told him we'd always known he was gay as it was bloody obvious. He was really miffed as coming out was a huge deal for him and his big dramatic moment. He'd convinced himself that we'd all judge and shun him, so when he discovered we'd all known for years and weren't bothered in the slightest he was really pissed him off and he flounced out in a sulk! It was hilarious!🤣🤣🤣

Another sketch series they did was Come Fly With Me Come Fly with Me is a British mockumentary television comedy series created by and starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Narrated by Lindsay Duncan, the series launched on 25 December 2010 on BBC One. A spoof of British documentaries Airport and Airline, the series follows the activity at a major airport and three fictional airlines: low-cost British airline ‘FlyLo’ (a parody of Flybe), low-cost Irish airline ‘Our Lady Air’ (a parody of Ryanair), and major British airline ‘Great British Air’ (a parody of British Airways).

Little Britain is 20 years old, and some things definitely would be approached differently today. However, making fun of people who are overweight. Tyler misses the point here- the humour is the awful diet coach NOT a dig at the overweight people! Even very successful TV shows in Britain rarely do more than 2-3 seasons. In the case of Little Britain both Matt Lucas and David Walliams had other projects to pursue. They have worked together since on other TV skech type shows, but both have a wide range of individual projects too.

@christor2907

It was slightly controversial at the time, but a firm favorite amongst younger generations and more progressive/ less sensitive people. It was one of the shows that really launched the now online only (declined since it stopped producing good shows) TV channel BBC3 into popularity amongst youth. e.g. I was 8-11 years old when the show first aired but watched it with my dad who was by then already in his 40's. he has a great sense of humor and was not prudish like many his age and really enjoyed it. I didn't really get what was going on, but by my teenage years, we would re-watch together. It is one of those where not all humor would be acceptable now & some more borderline e.g. they did a black face character. I think it would be fine to air most of it still now, but i don't think it would do as well, especially amongst the current teenage generation. I do find that at least in our first world countries, we are so far past times of victorian humor. true satire is on the decline and each generation is becoming more and more social media driven socially as well as privilaged and protected and thus more sensitive. I guess that is just a progression of history though. 400+ years ago, crowds would gather in public centres to enjoy the entertaining spectacle of a public execution, and we have become, rightly, obviously. A lot more sensitive since then.

I'm not entirely sure if he might even have been left to improvise some of those intros, they seem to tally with his general weirdness (probably one reason he was such a great Doctor was he wasn't playing an alien character, he was playing himself at 110%, especially when he was given more free reign. Years later there was a Dead Ringers where the impersonator, who does a pretty good 4th Doctor himself, cold called Tom Baker in character and Tom didn't miss a beat, he just went along with it. Another time they called Sylvester McCoy in character and he thought it was Tom calling up drunk which does indicate he really is known to be just as weird off camera)

David Walliams has written a ton of childrens books. however, he's now started to bring those books to life. and one of the more recent productions brought him to the area I live. I have a friend who lived in the tower block that was used for filming. she's a bit dippy, and she's Scottish, and when she gets excited, I'm one of a few people who can understand her! and I bumped into her on the bus one day and she showed me David Walliams autograph that he wrote on her hand and she totally forgot his name....!!!! It took me ten minutes to calm her down enough to get her back down to earth to work out the autograph on her hand! and then literal seconds to be totally jealous!! so, if you get the chance to watch 'Ratburger', now you know!! My mum HATED 'Little Britain', but did like David Walliams... eventually... when he became one of the judges on 'Britains Got Talent'.🙄

Little Britain would be totally different if it was pitched now. Even 20 years ago, it was criticised for being mean spirited and perpetuating damaging stereotypes. It definitely pushed the boundaries of comedy, but imo hasn’t aged at all well.

Ooh! Do the League of Gentlemen next! You'll get to watch some of our very best _dark_ comedy, which i don't think America does. Specifically start with Tubs and Edward and the policeman sketch. Also, you should just watch the entire series, not just some kind of 'top 10'

At its best, UK comedy pushes the envelope, sets it on fire, stamps on it, eats it, defecates it and throws that at your window. Try "Brasseye".

PS: Little Brittain is also very well known in most of Europe, it was even translated to other languages, like german. "Computer sagt Nein." was a thing for months over in my country.

The computer says no and andys "yeah i know" thing was said alot when it was on tv... alot of kids said it when I was in school Vicky said: Swapped it for a westlife CD. Also the stereotype vicky is the scum we call chavs. A chav is: a young person in Britain of a type stereotypically known for engaging in aggressively loutish behavior especially when in groups and for wearing flashy jewelry and athletic casual clothing (such as tracksuits and baseball caps) and destroy property and graffiti everything... in short...a wannabe gangster in scum form

So there is a tradition in British comedy and other TV that you dont want it to go on to long. After a couple of seasons many writers find the material repeats so will start an entirely new project which keeps everything. Fresh. A little more controversial is “the league of Gentlemen” which would really cause some problems.

Vicky Pollard says "swapped it for a Westlife CD". (Westlife being popular Irish boyband back in the 90s in the UK). If you can try and watch full episodes and also Little Britain USA - you will LOVE that! I thought it was a great show - love Carol Beer. But surely Harvey Pincher (bitty) was one of best characters. I hope you get to review some more 😄

Matt Lucas is in fact gay, so in his sketches about being the only ‘gay’ in the village, he is comfortable to make fun of himself, and exaggerate the behaviour of a gay. Because he accepts that it is funny.

One of the main things that mainly comes through on British comedy like little Britain and only fools and horses is not just that they are funny, it's the timing of the canned laughter. I find the canned laughter a distraction however the sketches are great.

It was a real phenomenon when it was on, partially because it really pushed the envelope & stepped over the line of what was happening on comedy TV at the time. The voice overs that were utterly nuts were done by Tom Baker (Doctor Who in the 70's), there were tonnes of phrases that became user by the general public (e.g. "Computer Says No). And yes, a lot of the characters are just the 2 stars dressed as women). - LOLs Vicki Pollard, the translation to the answer to the question where is your baby is "Swapped it for a West-Life CD" (West-Life was a pop-band in the UK at the time & Vicki is supposed to be a teenager) Vicki is a lower economic teenager, at the time refered to as a "Chav" who traditionally wore tracksuits hair tied back in a ponytail, usually had gold jewellery & designer sneakers, uneducated, living in govt highrise housing, underage pregnancy, petty theft & an also indeciferable accent (even for other Brits), Vicki Pollard is a distilled interpretation of the average "Chav" at that time. :)

They made a series for the US in the US. David Schwimer was a huge fan of the UK show and was the director of the American series. Matt Lucas said that because he was over weight when growing up he was taken to diet clubs and based Marjorie Dawes's character on a real life person but he takes it to the extreme. Rosie O'Donnell was a huge fan of the character and appeared in a sketch. The Davfyyd "only gay in the village" is based on his and many other gay peoples experience of building up to coming out and then finding out that no one really cares that your gay. Haha 😄😄❤️❤️ You really should try and watch some full episodes. You will most likely be really shocked at how extreme many characters are. Like the racist old lady in a little village and Matt Lucas's lady boy "Ting Tong".
