Crumpets are nothing like "English Muffins". Crumpets are more like a rubbery, bendy, thick pancake until they are toasted. Rhubarb is very common in North West US States. You cook and eat the thick stalks. As kids, we were always told that rhubarb leaves are poisonous.

Lol almost all toilets in Australia have the two buttons on the toilet, they were actually invented here in Aus where water saving can be seriously important at times, largest to smallest they’re full flush and half flush buttons, if you just urinate, then half flush, if you defecate, full flush hahahaha
@scragar
@scragar 4 ай бұрын
Not a fan personally. I get it saves water, but the buttons can get stuck depressed a lot easier than the old handle flush, and then you need to take the lid of the cistern and mess around to sort it out. I'd much rather go for the design I saw a few years ago where you pull the handle down and keep it down for a second or two to activate a full flush vs half flush, it never seemed to get stuck and just feels so much more intentful than the half button.

In the UK I believe that is against regulations to have a regular light switch in your bathroom (along with electrical sockets) to avoid potential electrocution. Therefore lights are turned on by pull chords or by switches outside of the room (on the wall outside the room by the door). The only electrical sockets allowed in the bathroom are shaver sockets.

Like having no electical outlets in the bathroom, for safety reasons you can't have a standard light switch due to the risk of shock if your hands are wet. So it's either a pull cord or the switch is outside the bathroom door. And no they shouldn't be that hard to pull unless it's broken
@scragar

Some bathrooms have razor outlets, but they're deliberately isolated from the rest of the electrical system and amp/wattage limited to ensure that if you ever do plug something in that's wet and shorts it can't produce dangerous current(although it still stings). They're useless beyond say charging your electric toothbrush or razor though since they're often limited to about 40W and 350mA. For comparison a modern USB-C fast charge is around 60W and 5,000mA.

Crumpets are NOTHING LIKE MUFFINS. We have both crumpets and muffins in the UK. They are totally different. Muffins are made with a batter infused with yeast and the yeast makes the batter fill with aerated holes so the crumpet is more rubbery and filled with holes all throughout. The muffin is like bread, light and similar to a pancake. They are completely different things. They both are made with wheat flour but apart from that they are COMPLELETLY DIFFERENT in appearance, texture, and taste.

The blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), also known as black currant or cassis, is a deciduous shrub in the family Grossulariaceae grown for its edible berries. It is native to temperate parts of central and northern Europe and northern Asia, where it prefers damp fertile soils. It is widely cultivated both commercially and domestically. It is winter hardy, but cold weather at flowering time during the spring may reduce the size of the crop. Bunches of small, glossy black fruit develop along the stems in the summer and can be harvested by hand or by machine. The raw fruit is particularly rich in vitamin C and polyphenols. Blackcurrants can be eaten raw but are usually cooked in sweet or savoury dishes. They are used to make jams, preserves, and syrups and are grown commercially for the juice market. The fruit is also used to make alcoholic beverages and dyes.

Though they are both griddle cakes cooked on the stove, there are some key differences between crumpets and English muffins. A crumpet is a small, round bread made from flour, yeast, salt, baking soda, warm water, and milk. You can make crumpets by pouring the batter into a crumpet ring mold and cooking the batter on one side on the stovetop or in a griddle pan or frying pan. Crumpets are commonly enjoyed during breakfast or afternoon tea, with fruit jam, clotted cream, or butter placed on top of the crumpet. An English muffin is a small, round bread made from flour, yeast, butter, salt, and milk. To make English muffins, roll the dough into smaller pieces and cook both sides of the pieces on a stovetop, in a griddle pan, or a frying pan. You can dust the muffins with cornmeal or semolina to keep them from sticking to the pan. Slice English muffins in half and serve them with fruit jam or butter, or add egg and cheese to make a breakfast sandwich. The English muffin was invented in the 1880s by Samuel Bath Thomas, a British expat in New York City. Thomas created the “toaster crumpet,” inspired by the traditional English crumpet known for its small holes that are ideal for soaking up spreads and butter. Crumpets and English muffins are both popular for breakfast, but there are some differences: Batter: Crumpets have a loose batter and are usually cooked inside of a crumpet ring mould. English muffins have a firm dough, and the muffins are usually rolled out into little balls before cooking on the stove. Texture: English muffins have more of a bread-like texture, while crumpets have a spongy texture. English muffin halves are commonly toasted in a toaster, giving them a crispy texture. Crumpets tend to be chewy. Cooked sides: You cook one side of crumpets and both sides of English muffins. That means that you can see the nooks and crannies on the top of the crumpets. With an English muffin, you have to slice it in half to see the nooks and crannies. Service: English muffins are thicker. Typically, cooks slice English muffins in half before serving. For crumpets, you can add toppings directly onto the crumpet since it is a flatter bread.

I think it is some misguided British influencers that have caused people to believe that English muffins and Crumpets are the same, or even indeed similar. They are not. It is difficult to describe a crumpet unless you have had one, but they are a baked good with lots of holes in the top that allow butter to soak into them. They are a very unique taste and truly delicion. It is also down to some misguided British influencers that the misperception is that we dont have English muffins in the UK. We absolutely do. Most supermarkets sell them and they in fact originate from England (they were a popular item for bakers to sell on their rounds). We call them muffins rather than English muffins. That there are people in the UK who dont buy them and dont notice them in the shops does not alter the fact they are there. Confusingly we also call the sweet muffin we also just call muffins. I think some of the uniformed believe that this is the only type of muffin you can get in the UK outside McDonalds. They are wrong

Corn in pizza is probably as common as Pineapple on pizza here in the UK. It's a very neutral topping. I personally don't hate or love corn on pizza... but too love corn and pizza by themselves. We have handle/lever toilets and are the most common "flusher". However the button is becoming more common and is normally found in commercial toilets. Pull cords are only found in rooms with running water. This is to keep wet hands far away from electricity... specifically... a switch. Don't forget we use 240 Volts in our mains, which is twice as powerful as USA's. Crumpets are similar to a American English muffin but they are tougher and more doughy... they are a nice Breakfast or lunch snack. Butter is the most common topping, but jam is quite frequently used. Blackcurrants are awesome... i would describe them as Sweet and bitter, like a stronger flavour grape but with less juice and flesh. They are tiny and are normally used in bulk. Rhubarb is awesome. However it must be baked or cooked. My favourite sweet dish/pudding is Rhubarb and Devon custard. By itself it's a sweet and bitter earthy taste. Imagine celery... but with a additional sweet and bitter flavour.

Blackcurrants and especially rhubarb are more sour, but might be a touch of bitter. I'm used to adding lots of sugar to either - especially the rhubarb, but I remember that rhubarb was not that sweet on its own. Black currants are probably more like red/dark grapes and lemon juice - or similar to blackberries if you have those. Rhubarb is mostly just sour, but doesn't taste like a lemon. You usually spot the difference in flavour more after adding sugar, though it's hard to describe sweetened rhubarb unless you've tried it.

Chicken and sweetcorn as well as tuna and sweetcorn are classic combinations. We also sometimes get it on vegetarian pizzas. As far as it goes, I would much rather have corn on a pizza than pineapple or anchovy. The dual 'flush button' is for water savings and I believe you can find it throughout Europe too (although I am not totally sure about this). The idea is that you have two different strengths of flush so if you only have a pee you use the less powerful one while you use the other to get rid of the solid waste. The pull cord light switches are there in order to meet safety regulations. You are not allowed to have any electrical switches or sockets within a certain distance of a water source in the UK unless they are of a certain design that is only really used for electric razors or hair trimmers. Rhubarb is a root vegetable (that features very large leaves at the end of the stalk) with a very sharp, strong flavour but it's very nice to eat when cooked, sweetened and served with a thick custard. If you don't know what custard is like why not look up a recipe online and make some? It is made primarily with eggs, sugar and vanilla extract so it's nothing you can't get hold of. Other things we serve custard with include apple pies, spotted dick (not that kind of dick) and it is sometimes used as an ingredient in trifles and bread & butter puddings.

Pretty sure one was Westinghouse which you’d think would be available in the US, providing the lower voltage is ok. The toilet flush is a fairly new thing in Britain though. They were available when we left to go to Australia but we didn’t have one, but they’ve been standard down under for ages. They’re a water saving thing, the smaller button is a lighter flush for pee and the larger button is the full flush for when you’ve parked your breakfast.

Electric pull cords on bathroom lights, if connected correctly they can be used with a very gentle pull. We also put light switches on the wall outside the bathroom. So you then switch it on or off as normal when you enter or leave the bathroom. My dad was an electrician and knew all about the rules and regulations of not having any electrical sockets in the bathroom as obviously electricity and water do not mix and our electric power is 240 volts whereas in the US it is only 120 or 140 volts.

The divided button shown is becoming very common, If a small, light flush is required you push the small segment, if a 'larger' flush is needed you push the large segment. You can even push both segments together if needed!!!

Domestic mains electricity voltage in the UK is double what you are used to in the US, which means there is a greater risk of electrocution if a person were to try and use a regular wall switch with wet hands, so in the UK the switch for the light will either be situated on the wall in the corridor outside the kitchen or bathroom, or else the switch itself will be on the ceiling with all the wires kept tucked away out of reach, with a pull cord to turn it on or off. You will find normal sockets in the kitchen but they will usually be on a different wall away from the sink, and in the bathroom there might only be a lower voltage socket just for an electric shaver, literally nothing else. If you want to blow dry your hair or similar, you have to do that in the bedroom.

I've had corn on a pizza, but it was on by default, and it was okay but I never really thought about it. Pull cords in the bathroom is found in older properties, but now we have a normal light but with the switch on the outside of the room. Although there is a red pull-cord in hospital toilets, but that sets off an alarm for the nurses to come running help to help you if you've fallen etc; and yes I've pulled them sometimes confusing them for the light switch! Crumpets with British/Irish butter are an easily made breakfast, with strawberry or blackberry jam. Rhubarb and custard, or rhubarb pie with custard is great. The rhubarb leaves are poisonous, so you can't eat them or put them into your recycling vegetable waste pile. Great video!

until last September, I had a pull cord bathroom light. the place was rewired and the light switch is now on the wall outside. the bathroom. my brain still tries to find the bloody thing when in the middle of winter, on a cold night, I make that last minute dash to the bathroom and grapple at... the wrong sodding wall!!! 🤣 getting there though. it's taken this long for me to realise 'the light switch has been relocated, you idiot!' 🤣 I love rhubarb season - nothing like peeling off that rhubarb skin and just biting down on it. I've been labelled a psychopath because I don't dip it in sugar first. I'll admit that I don't like sweet fruits that often but, rhubarb is a matter of timing and really fresh rhubarb is sweet enough. even when I make a crumble, I add as little sugar to it as possible. if I need sweet, the crumble and the custard do that. crumpets and 'English muffins' are about as far apart as John O'Groats is to Lands End. confusing the two is almost blasphemy. I love blackcurrant sweets but only if they're really good - Rowntree 'black and red ' fruit pastilles are pretty high up on my sweets list. this manchild needs a serious education. he's going to realise one of these days that, despite being a small island nation, the UK does some pretty phenomenal things he's never going to taste unless he leaves the safe confines of his 'youtube studio'. other US based youtubers have tasted blackcurrant and for them, there is no going back to life before it. some have stockpiled bottles of ribena and revere it as though it was sacred. some treat vimto in a similar manner. it's only a matter of time before the blackcurrant becomes a 'thing' there. 😀

Are English muffins the same as crumpets? Crumpets and English muffins are both popular for breakfast, but there are some differences: Batter: Crumpets have a loose batter and are usually cooked inside of a crumpet ring mold. English muffins have a firm dough, and the muffins are usually rolled out into little balls before cooking on the stove. 17 Sept 2021 MUFFINS English muffins are usually referred to simply as muffins in the UK. Sweet American-style muffins are occasionally referred to as American muffins to differentiate. They are usually consumed with tea or coffee, and sometimes feature in afternoon tea served in UK hotels.

Light cord pulls are so you won’t get electrocuted. British bathrooms tend to be a lot smaller than American ones so you will probably get dried off before leaving the bathroom whereas the smaller British bathrooms you are tempted to turn the light off which is in closer proximity to the shower/bath and you are more likely to go to your bedroom and get dried off instead of the cold bathroom 😃

A crumpet is not an English muffin. They are different. 2 buttons on the toilet. 1 for pee 1 for poop. Less water used for getting rid of pee. The parking break or handbreak as it's known here is because most of our cars have manual transmission/gears and when we park the car is left in neutral so a handbreak is needed. Automatic cars the car is left in "park" so the wheels don't move and no additional parking break is needed. If you had a car with a clutch and gears you would use a parking break. Bathroom light chords are kinda uncommon now but that's just an old safety feature. So that no wet hands touched a light switch. No electrocution from a chord.

The toilet buttons are for half-flush (if you pee) and full flush (if you poo). It saves a lot of water. Pull cords on bathroom lights are pretty old-fashioned - it was to prevent being electrocuted in a wet room. Crumpets are to the UK as waffles are to the US - and they're nothing like muffins in the UK! Blackcurrant flavour is similar to cranberry - good as a soft drink flavour and as jam. With rhubarb, you definitely don't eat the leaves - they're poisonous! You eat the stalks, diced and cooked as a dessert with cream or custard, or cooked in a pie (apple and rhubarb crumble is very nice indeed).

The reason some bathrooms have a pull cord in uk is for safety reasons. Because UK voltage is MUCH higher switches are banned inside bathrooms. So if you want to turn on a light or a fan inside a bathroom then you need a pull corn. Otherwise all switches need to be outside the bathrooms. There is a pull cord in my family’s main bathroom but the downstairs toilet has a switch outside the toilet room for the light.

You MUST have come across stuff about British bathrooms before! Our electricity mains supply is 240volts - which means we have NO power outlets allowed in bathrooms for safety reasons (apart from the special shaver outlets) - and that means no standard wall-switches for the lights, either (wet hands with 240 volt-switches....?). Hence the pull-cord switch for the lights. Either that, or a standard switch on the wall OUTSIDE the bathroom!

Rhubarb is another food that needs sugar to be edible. It is unbeliveable tart. It contains oxalic acid which is so tart that it can be used for bleaching wood. I ate a lot of it as a kid, by peeling the stalks (don't eat leaves of flowers as it may kill you) and dip it into sugar for each bite. For use in pie, cook it in sugar for a long time first.

To explain the flavor of Blackcurrant I would start with comparing it to grapes. If you know the difference between green grapes, red grapes and black grapes, then you know that black grapes (so black that they often have a blueish shine) have a certain deep element to itæs flavor. You can sense a similar difference between blackberries and raspberries. This may be the flavor element that is called "earthy". I would not call it earthy, but rather deep and rich, like the sound of the bass player in a band. Blackcurrant has this background type of flavor, but is more tart than grapes. It is actually comparable to passionfruit in tartness. This makes it a very good berry for combining with sugar, which brings out all the lovely complexities of flavor often hidden behind the tartness. Here in Norway Blackberries has been an essental source of vitamin-C and the traditional way to preserve it is to make a cordial, so you can have easy vitamin C through the winter. It taste great diluted 1:4 with water and served either hot or cold.

Pizza - corn tends to be part of a vegetarian pizza along with mushrooms, peas, peppers, etc. Toilet - two buttons in one. Which part you press depends on what you have put into the bowl. For liquid, use the smaller part, for solids the larger part. The different sizes denotes how much water is used. Basically, a water saving measure. Light pull, if you have wet hands in a bathroom there is a greater chance of electrocuting yourself. A pull-cord reduces this risk considerably. I have one in the kitchen. Crumpets are great. With butter melted into the holes are amazing. Melted cheese is ... wow. Muffins are round bread.

A few points come together here. In the U K our electricity runs up to 240v which can be fatal as opposed to the US 110?v which is not. Therefore in the UK they make more effort to protect us from electrocution which means no electric outlets in bathrooms, safer plugs and pull switches which are safe however wet you are. On the plus side we have sufficient power to boil water in an electric kettle which works for tea, coffee, pasta and heating water for cooking vegetables! The combined washing machine drier exists due to UK houses being smaller, we don't have dedicated areas to clothes and instead have the washing machine in the kitchen. Electric Kettles take too long to warm up in the U.S. due to the voltage difference, UK uses 220~230 compared to the 110~120 due to differences in how electrics are done in US to UK, such a kettle in the US would need to run at basically twice the amps to get the same wattage. The same differences in electrics is why there are pull cords in bathrooms, the higher voltage would pose more danger in a more humid and wet environment. I dunno if Sweetcorn on Pizza is a British thing, you can get it all over the world, just not North America. Most Pizza chains do it here, including Dominoes. I wouldn't have corn alone as a topping but it works with other toppings. Crumpets are nice, they are basically a type of bread, I love em with butter and cheese on top but you can have them sweet instead by using other toppings like Jam. Crumpets are not English Muffins, they are quiet different, we'd just call an "English" Muffin, a Muffin. Black currents are most famous in the UK from Black current squash (similar to a cordial), mainly Ribena, but black current jams also exist. Rhubarb is used in desserts, my Grandmother use to make Rhubarb Crumble (a British dessert). Rhubarb is definitely something that'd be more associated to being used in sweeter dishes. The flush button is becoming more common and more of a relatively recent things, I have come across it in a few countries in South East Asia too but that maybe due to staying in hotels, it's basically just two different flushes, a big flush and a small flush, I think you can guess where two different flush sizes are used, I believe it's supposed to save water but such systems are prone to leaking (into the toilet bowl) and it's questionable if they really save water from my understanding.

Sweet Corn is disgusting but is on most vegetarian pizzas that you order from Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc unless you specify not to have it. I had no idea this was weird to Americans as they have all sorts of corn based stuff that doesn't exist in the UK. Crumpets (and pikelets) are amazing, especially with Vegemite or Marmite. Rhubarb is cool but needs sweetening to eat, but it's really nice as part of an apple and rhubarb crumble or flavouring rhubarb and ginger gin.
