It makes me laugh hearing from a tourist that British food isn't good , especially when he's never left London. The food , range , availability, and safety standards of UK food is second to none. I love international food but I'm totally proud to eat British too !! 💕 and by the way, crumpets and muffins are totally different things 😆👍

He didn't say that, he said it was often said by Americans who have never been there. He likes the food! I think he said that crumpets look similar to an English muffin as in North America, they sort of do, but English Muffins don't have holes in them.

The “bangers” name came about from the sausages that were made during rationing when butchers would add a lot of water and other fillers to bulk out their sausages to give customers more food from their small meat rations. The excess water content would turn to steam and the pressure caused the contents to explode from the sausage skins with a loud bang. The name just stuck even for thee much higher quality sausages generally used for bangers and mash today.

Also baked beans in UK makes a lot more sense for breakfast, because they aren't as heavily sweetened in America, so with being more savoury they definitely make a good addition. If you do go for the Full English, a good way to eat it is to gather a bit of everything on to a slice of toast and it; on top of the things shown in the video, depending on which cafe you go to, the Full English will also include fried tomatos and/or mushrooms.

He absolutely said some dumb shit, but the lemonade-Sprite thing is understandable; I believe for a lot of Americans their concept of lemonade is more like still cloudy lemonade, whereas for us lemonade (and any drink with -ade in the name) is going to be carbonated (and usually clear, hence why we distinguish "cloudy lemonade" from simply "lemonade") and the best aproximation they have to our version of lemonade are branded drinks like Sprite.

Wherever you go for a fry up you can always say "no beans" or "no pudding" etc and they'll always accommodate the change, most places will offer to replace it with a different item too, like extra egg or another sausage. The tap water varies. In London it’s not so nice, but in other regions it’s much nicer. It depends on the hardness of the water. Here in North West England the water is amongst the softest in the country and it really is fine to drink, I don’t buy bottled water as it’s over priced and no better
@sydnorth5868
@sydnorth5868 2 жыл бұрын
The water in London and the South East is 'hard' because it is drawn from aquifers that percolate through limestone and chalk, and thus contain high levels of calcium carbonates. The further north and west you go the less this is so. In the North West most of the tap water comes from natural run off in the Lake District. Manchester has had its water supplied via the Thirlmere aqueduct for over 90 years.

American impressions of English food are heavily influenced by World War 2, when Americans came over en masse first as soldiers and then as tourists after the war. British food was rationed for 14 years from 1940 on, and took a long time to recover after that. If you look at what the Tudors and even the Victorians ate, it was a very different thing. Thankfully we're getting back to normal now!
@birdie1585

UK diet is not getting back to "normal" - whatever that is - that is why we have an obesity epidemic. People in the UK are also as likely to eat Chinese, Asian, Meditteranean, even American, cuisine as anything supposedly traditional English. Even "traditional English breakfast" now frequently includes things such as hush puppies (which are shoes in the UK), or hash browns.

If you come to the North West of England, you have to go to Blackpool and have 'Blackpool Rock', which is like hard boiled candy in a stick form. You will find rock shops basically at any coastal resort in the UK. Blackpool is great, and a traditional seaside resort. Lancaster for the history - outside of London it was the only city to have the most executions back in the day) and is known as 'the hanging town'. The Pendle Witch trials took place in Lancaster in the 17th century (the equivalent of the Salem witch trials) and they were hanged in Lancaster. Morecambe Bay too, beautiful scenery. And it's the gateway to the Lake District! Scones with butter, jam and clotted cream- it's a staple in the lakes. We do proper cakes up here. Afternoon tea is also a big thing. It's basically something you have in the afternoon (obviously), which consists of little finger sandwiches with the crusts cut off (usually egg mayo, tuna and cucumber, ham or cheese), followed by cakes and scones with jam and cream. Yorkshire puddings as well, it's like pancake batter but you put it in the oven on a cake tray and bake them with oil and they rise and go crispy. You have to put loads of gravy in them (meat gravy, not the white gravy you have with grits). Seriously, come to me if you want to know what to eat LOL :)

I definitely saw the difference in waiting staff when I went to the US. Whilst a waiter/ress in the UK might come over once or twice to check if everything is okay, you won't get approached as much as you do in the US or see the waiter hovering near by as much. So you may need to call over a waiter if you require something, like a drinks refill, for example. It also depends on where you're dining. It doesn't make it bad service, just be aware that it's not expected here for waiting staff to be close by as much.

Crumpets & Muffins are two completely different thing's & 'High Tea' is between 5pm & 6pm. If you are somewhere posh & ask for a High Tea at 4pm, you'll have a long wait. High Tea is Traditionally, Earl Grey Tea, Very thinly cut Cucumber Sandwiches without the crust & a piece of sponge cake. Tea with Scones, clotted cream & Jam (Traditionally it's Strawberry Jam) is called a Devonshire Tea.

When it comes to tipping, unlike in the US, there is no lower minimum wage for people who are expected to make their money through tips; as such, it's less of a thing here because people aren't typically relying on tips to pay the rent. There's also less of waiters heading to your table and the like unless you call them over, because it's kind of assumed that you don't want them hovering around your table while you're eating.

I used to run front of house in a gastro pub. I also trained all the staff. A customer should never be looking around for their waiter/waitress. The only thing they need to get up for is to go to the loo, not to the bar, etc. It is a case of being attentive without being intrusive. It is done in a more subtle way.

That's the really big difference between what US and European customers expect in a restaurant. Americans want the staff to be more like personal assistants, there almost contanstly. In Europe, typically people don't want the staff there unless they specifically want them to help out with something.

@@shona5512 Where I worked everyone had their own sections and everybody was expected to know where their tables were up to and what their needs were. If a guest has to call a waiter over the waiter was obviously not paying attention; didn't go back to check that the food was okay, didn't ask if anyone would like to order more drinks when their glasses were getting low, etc, etc. When staff interfered with other peoples tables that is when mistakes happen and their own tables get neglected. It results in bad service and escalates really quickly. It is also a way to make sure everyone pulls their weight. That is why I insisted everyone kept their own tips and didn't pool them. Tips are a sign of appreciation that you did a good job. Got rubbish tips? Then up your game. ;)

@@julietessam2999 Every restaurant I've ever been too have 20-30 tables and ~8 waiters. It's usually more than enough, because the workload is at different intervals. Food is getting delivered at different times, and in between meals being served the waiters will stop by each table and say "is everything ok folks, do you need anything?" You can check in on customers without hovering, and you don't need 1 waiter for every other table. If mistakes are happening because staff are mixing with other tables, you just have terrible staff. If you have that much staff, no wonder restaurants pay them such a low rate and they rely on tips. Get less staff, train them to have enough cognitive ability to not make stupid mistakes and then you can afford to pay less people the same amount of money, and they'll actually feel like they're valued as a worker. Not just a slave forced to fend for themselves. Quality, not quantity.

While the guy reviewing deserves credit, he's fallen into the trap of thinking restaurant food is typical British food. Take the picture of Bangers and Mash he shows. That isn't what it looks like. Generally is a huge scoop of mash, sausages and then smothered in onion gravy. He talks about the beer and how it isn't cold but that's because some ales are meant to served at room temperature. I'm not having a go at the dude who made the review video, all I wanted to suggest is maybe you find a video from someone who lives here to give you a better view on traditional grub. As always, great and entertaining video.

Actually Londoners drink a lot more coffee than tea from my observation. Tea is still traditional, people do drink it, but because the 9-6 working/commuting life leaves everyone so tired they're just guzzling coffee all the time. They walk into work in the morning cup in hand and have at least two more throughout the day probably. Starbucks, Costa, there are coffee places on practically every street in London (only slight exaggeration).

Even the Swiss rösti (which is just like a giant hash brown) has only been around for a relatively short time in the UK. 70 year ago we didn't talk about 'traditional' breakfasts, we just called it 'bacon and eggs'.Bacon and eggs usually included the occasional sausage and some starch in the form of toast or bread fried in bacon fat. Having been to the US a number of times, the American view of British food comes from their grandparents or great grandparents who served here in WWII. We had rationing where the food was designed to sustain us rather than to please us. But during that time obesity went down as did heart disease and other food related illnesses. Since WWII British food has changed dramatically, we have embraced some of the best cuisines from around the world and top chefs from around the world praise the quality of what we produce. The way we produce our food is to higher standards than most other countries, so the quality is internationally recognized. As I've said I've been to the US and my experience quantity over quality is the norm, quality is harder to find, but it is there.

The myth about Britain having bad food mainly comes from Americans and refugees from other countries staying there in WW2, when Britain was rationing. Same goes for the whole "bad teeth" thing. With Britain being the primary staging area in Europe it saw a massive influx of people from countries that hadn't experienced rationing in their own countries who later went back and told the horror stories about how bad the food was. Also, a traditional full English is back bacon, Egg (fried, scrambled or poached), Tomato (grilled or fried), fried Mushrooms, Toast (or fried bread) and sausage. Common extras are black pudding, beans (almost standard these days), Hash browns, bubble and squeak (regional) and potato cakes (again, regional). As a side note. When it comes to alcohol make sure to try some mead. The traditional one tastes like I always assumed beer would taste when I was a kid lol. But it's growing in popularity, and can be flavoured with almost anything same as gin or vodka. It's the oldest recorded alcoholic beverage.

@@rachelpenny5165 I grew up in North Somerset, a couple of miles from Thatchers' farm. Their scrumpy was the best in the area, and is still ten times better than their fizzy stuff. I like a Gold or a Haze now and then, mind.

When you do visit JT definitely get your fish and chips (with plenty of salt and vinegar) from a Chippy rather than a restaurant, even better if your by the seaside eaten straight out the paper x

In many pubs you get your table, there will be a table number, and you then go to the bar to order your food and drink. The food is usually brought to your table. Quite common in UK. Pubs rarely have waiter service. You go to the bar yourself to get drinks. Food wise, Sunday roasts, full English breakfast, pies and chips, fish and chips, ploughman's lunch, sausages, cornish pasties, sausage rolls.

Most people don't have afternoon tea at 4pm these days. My grandmother used to make a pot of tea and have it with a biscuit at 4pm, but people don't typically have a full high tea every day. They might go out to have one for a treat every now and then - tea with little sandwiches, cakes and scones with jam and cream. People do have several mugs of tea or coffee per day, eg at 11am or 4pm, often with a biscuit. Water in London is revolting, but in the North, the water is soft and tastes fine.

The real ales and draught beers in pubs are generally dispensed by hand pumps which use a vacuum to send the beer into the glass whereas Lager ( light beer) normally is dispensed by a button which uses gas to push the beer into the glass. With the hand pumps the taste of the beer isn’t tainted by the gas.

If you make it to Northern Ireland, then you have to go for an Ulster Fry - like the "Full English" raised to a whole new level :D It's hard to beat a good steak & kidney pie, too . . . Cadbury chocolate isn't what it used to be. I can't eat it any more, and find Galaxy is much nicer.

Sunday Roast dinner is absolutely something you must do whilst here in the UK as is a English Breakfast of some sort. As for Black Pudding, I'm a recent convert to it over the last few years and I'd recommend trying it at least (I'm still more into White Pudding which is more an Irish thing)

When you come here, come to Birmingham. They have amazing local areas good for Indian and Chinese food, and Cadbury World. It is the tourist attraction at the main Cadbury factory. We went in February 2020. They give you chocolate while going round, you can play with melted chocolate and learn to spread it, and see workers decorating the different products. We also booked a chocolate themed afternoon tea in the cafe which was delicious. The gift shop had some more unusual products and the imperfect chocolates. Mountain Dew is harder to find in stores here. I’m not sure about London stores as I live in the South West. I only know of a couple of places here that sell it. The tap water tastes different in each area. London and the surrounding areas are usually fed by the Thames, so it has more limescale in it. It furs up the pipes and your kettle quickly. The Midlands water comes from Wales, and has less limescale. We use a Brita water filter to take the scale out. When at cafes, look for home baked goods. The culture for home baking is huge. Try a traditional Victoria sponge, a Bakewell tart, traditional fruit cake and of course scones. There are regional recipes to look for too, like Welsh cakes and Bara Brith in Wales and Eccles cakes. Hot puddings are great here too. Bread and butter pudding is a must, with lots of custard. Any form of crumble, mince pies ( sweet mincemeat, mixed fruits and spices when made at home is also soaked in alcohol for a period of time) jam rolly polly, treacle tart, and sticky toffee pudding. If you make it to Yorkshire, look for a cafe chain called Betty’s. They are part of Taylor’s of Harrogate who produce teas and coffees. We had a fantastic afternoon in a Betty’s celebrating my husband’s birthday. It’s a traditional English tea room style, and has a huge choice of tea blends and cakes. It wasn’t cheap, but was incredible. We hope to go again at some point, although you can buy a limited number of products online.

If you’re in England and want to try an English breakfast (or “fry up” as we call it), the best advice is to ask a cab driver to recommend a good cafe. If anyone knows where to get the best fry up in town, it’ll be a cabbie. The high tea thing is not that common over here. We drink tea, obviously, many of us getting into double figures a day, but high tea, with finger sandwiches and little tea cups, that’s the sort of thing posh people do. I’m 45 and I’ve never had high tea in my life and I don’t know anyone who has. We have tea in big mugs, not dainty little tea cups.

No.. That’s AFTERNOON TEA.. HIGH TEA. Is usually served around 5.5.30 and consists of things like Cheese on toast, etc. a hot dish whereas Afternoon Tea.. is finger sandwiches, scones and cream and cakes. With a pot of tea.. and you don’t have to be “ posh to eat it “ 😊🤷‍♀️🇬🇧

I think that you probably don`t get fresh fish in the USA unless you are in a State that borders onto ocean. And the best fish comes from cold waters, so as the UK is an island with access to the North Atlantic for our fishermen , we are used to good quality fresh fish as a staple diet in our daily menu .
