There were plenty good scorers like Ibra, Henry before him but why him? Even now in Serie A when he is past his prime he is scoring like crazy breaking all time records like glass, if you see him playing you cant see what special thing he is doing but his positioning is so good he manages to get 5 shots and score 2 against almost all teams

@@thenorseprodigy7466 Messi will also break these records soon but we can see why, his dribbling and shot precision is crazy along with excellent vision and space interpretation, his sheer genius is visible in his game, you cant see that for Ronaldo because he excels in off the ball movement, his extremely simplistic gameplay looks easy and fraudistic but when you consider his achievements through that compared to other similar strikers and wingers, you realise he is also born with vision of his own, just a bit more restricted near the goal

I think the low scoring is what makes it special In sports like basketball scoring is so frequent, it becomes less of an achievement But in football ⚽️, goals are rare enough where it’s special when a goal is scored. The value of a goal is so high and you could be tied the whole game, and when your time finally scores you know how important it is. It isn’t like ‘oh we scored but they’re gonna just go up the other end and score too no big deal) There’s always a decent chance the opposition won’t score, that one goal could be the game right there.

Yes, but commercial television is not about exilleration. It's about being just interesting enough to make people watch the ads. So from a commercial point of view, it's about avoiding the too boring to keep watching rather than about showing the most exciting, there's no extra commercial value in exilleration, there is commercial loss in boredom. Football has got both, because it is so difficult to score in what is a huge target.

On the “soccer” vs “football” thing, I’d prefer to call it football all over the world too, but i believe the word “soccer” is still helping manage what would have been a lot of confusion in America, had it not been a separate term.

It’s the same in Australia We have our own code of football as well, so soccer is used here too. At least in Aussie rules football its mostly kicking not throwing like nfl lol. When I’m talking about football/soccer with people who are fans I’ll call it football, but talking to a normal person here you can’t do it cause they’ll think you’re talking about a completely different sport. It will still be called soccer in America and Australia even if it were to somehow shoot up in popularity, simply because there’s another code of the sport that’s already used and it would be too confusing to change now.

One of the contributing factors is that the history and passion of football comes from being able to fail with consequences, making the victories more electric, some teams who won the top league might be in the 3rd division after 5 or 6 bad years, without that element, the emotion just isn't there

Real football engenders an emotional tie between the fan and their chosen club. Football has been described as 'ritualised battle,' where hopes and emotions run high. The ties that bind fan to club, and perhaps less so now-a-days, player to club, are very deep. That's why it means so much emotionally. Of course it helps that it is an exceptionally skilful, exciting and strategic game to watch (although lots of newcomers completely miss out on the strategic nature of the game).

About vacation time - in Denmark it's 5 weeks per year by law, and most will have 1 more week through contracts/union agreements, and a minority will even have an additional week on top of that, usually something you earn for being at the same company for 10 years or something like that, so could be up to 7 weeks paid vacation time per year, but minimum 5. Also by law(I'm pretty sure, but might just be a union thing) you have the right too spend 3 of those weeks all in one go during the summer months - so 3 straight weeks of vacation at least once per year, at least if you choose so.

the fact that you dont just take turns scoring goals is the big selling point, it's actually an explosion of emotions when your team scores, because it's so important! In 2010 my son's U10 coach told me I needed to watch a soccer game with my son. So summer of 2010 I am searching the cable TV and find the World Cup. To my surprise, there is actually a US team. My son and I watch a few games, then we watch a few more, then there is "The GOAL!", and we just keep watching game after game. I eventually turn to my son and comment, "I was told this sport sucked, but I am really liking it." My son rolls his eyes and says, "Dad! It is the greatest sport ever." Now I watch soccer and nothing else. I have hours of it recorded and play it while I am on the elliptical. One thing I will warn you, it is the most addicting, cruel, maddening, beautiful game ever.

I'm portuguese (just as a reference) and I do fear that when the US decides to take soccer seriously that's it for everyone else. The amount of funding the US can put into their sports, their development programs and training science, is beyond what most other countries can or will put into it. And then there's the American self belief, that yes, does come out as arrogance and makes some people look like douches, but it's also almost undeniable that it also breeds some of the best athletes out there. And seeing how the age of the flair player seems to have come to an end, with tactics, pragmatism and athleticism being in the forefront, it bodes well to the US's chances of becoming a powerhouse in yet another aspect of human life in this world. Also, for @TKS and anyone else that has an issue with the term Soccer (it also used to annoy me and I would sometimes argue with americans over it) the first minute and a half of this HITC Sevens video (I know it's a channel we hold in high regard here) is a pretty good summary of why we should probably get over it besides also being pretty pertinent for the topic of the state of the sport in the US: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8qUo7h-nLWYpmw.html

Do not fear they only do well in sports no one else cares about that much like baseball, basketball and American football. And yes they always do the best in the Olympics but people only care about sports like swimming or archery, etc once every 4 years. Whereas football matches are watched every weekend so our countries care about it and are able to produce top quality players. It will be decades before the US is even considered to be good enough to win the world cup.

@nicos frangeskou That has been true for a long time but that's why I mention the changes to football that have been happening for a while now. The poor kids that play football on the streets became great players because of their flair and technique but the flair players in professional football are rarer these days and not as sought out. And regardless of that, most players that reach the top might have started poor but then were scouted and entered the academies of the biggest clubs of their region because these clubs have the resources to make them better, aka, money. So yes, the US being able to pour a lot of money into their sports has the potential to create great players.

I agree. The times when the likes of Pele, Zidane, Eusebio ect. learned to play in poorest conditions, but develloped insane skills with a ball are sadly gone. Not that there would not be enough children with such talent and skills, but those kids arern't wanted in club Football anymore in the same way. More and more tactics and strategy as well as hidden fouls are valued over skills, creativity and talent. Yes there are exceptions with the likes of Messi and C.Ronaldo, but there are fewer than in earlier times. The best example for me is the following The germans have a striker who is quite sucessfull because he is creative and unpredictable. (he might not have the ball skills of the 3 guys i mentioned at the beginning, but he has a talent for his position non the less) And what do the trainers/managers do: they aren't fond of him and even try to place him among the substitutes. Because they can't predict what he will do either. They'd rather prefer someone who always plays the same move or tactic over and over again, so they think they can "use" the player as they want to. Sadly. And with the american "methods" the things more valued by the football industry can be trained in an industrial way. (the skills of the 3 i mentioned above can not in my opinion). But one thing might remain: The bodily features of football players don't lend themselves much to cheap muscle and strength improving substances that are said to be prevalent in the 3 mentioned US sports.

I remember when the MLS started right after the 1984 World Cup. It was a group of completely unknown teams that would gather around 5K spectators in average. Now you have teams like Seattle who easily gather 40K fans every game. Atlanta, gathers 70K fans...and it's a relatively new team. 20 years ago, when the USMT would play World Cup games hardly anyone knew about it. Now huge crowds donning US jerseys and waving flags gather around US cities to watch them on giant screens on commercial plazas, promenades, etc. So, I say the sport is growing in popularity. And as the USMT becomes more competitive it will grow even more.

Smaller players in soccer are often more successful as similar to the nba height is integral. Like smaller players have a lower field of gravity which often helps with things such as agility and ball control. Messi or salah wouldn’t be the players they would be had they been over 6 foot. Obviously being a center back or goalkeeper typically you need to be 6,2 and above but that is obviously due to aerial duels, reach and physicality

This is the dumbest statement ever... especially if you've ever been to a real third-world country. Meanwhile, w/o bailouts, a lot of European countries would still be in shambles from post-WW2 had countries like the US not given tons of money and resources. Heck, my grandfather left Europe in the 50's because it was in shambles and the US was providing all the military protection anyway, so he just skipped on over the ocean to enjoy the absolute dream that was the US from the 1950s to early 2000s. It's still good for most people now too, the internet just spouts lots of false narratives 😂. We go back to visit family in their country (not going to say which one, but it's a western European country) every few years and I wouldn't trade places with them in a heartbeat. How can you call a sport where for 90% of the game the ball is in someone's hands football? American football should be named something else.

Yeah it should..."American Hand Egg" would be my suggestion..because in my understanding - a ball - has to be round like a circle and not egg shaped.

Rugby used to be called football, too. The game was brought to america a long time ago and the rules were changed over time

Football/Soccer is a really diverse game, you got short players, tall players, skinny players, muscular players and more... and that gives hope to kids that want to become a pro... in NBA for example if you are short by genetics you are not going to be able to fulfill your dreams
