Wow, I’ve always wondered about everything that goes on between collection and delivery so this was really neat to see! As a retail employee who unloads trucks and restocks the sales floor the testing and delivery process sort of fascinated me trying to imagine the journey my blood goes on between leaving me and primarily helping babies and now I know. Thanks so much for sharing this and to all of the employees who work hard to ensure that I can continue to help babies and whoever else may benefit from my cmv- whole blood donations!

Very cool. I'm a platelet donor, go in every two weeks. The Red Cross sends me a notice where the platelets (and once a month, plasma) go to, which is usually a local hospital. But obviously there's more to it.

I'm going for the first time to donate blood October 6, 2023!! Nervous though I've always hated needles but I've donated plasma so should be almost the same thing. I have been alerted that we're dealing with a shortage of blood so I'm going to save lives. I'm blood type O+

I stopped by an office yesterday to donate blood, especially since I don't drink alcoholic beverages or beer, don't smoke at all and don't do drugs, but was told I don't weigh enough to give blood.

Can you clarify if the donations are paid for by the hospital? I am unsure of how Red Cross receives funding considering it’s an NGO aside from the sponsorship mentioned. Is sponsorship that great?

I would also like to note that I’ve donated twice so I am curious as to how my blood donations have been handled monetarily aside from the processing aspect.

Hospitals pay around 150€ for gathering, testing, material, transport of blood per unit. Money comes from insurance conpanies, Medicare, Medicaid..blood is always included. That is in case blood is volontarily donated. If blood is paid for, cost for one unit can go to 3000$ and it will have to come out of patients pocket, at least a part. In the near future I presume demand will outpace the supply and healthcare workers will be forced to make a triage. Donated blood will be given to people close to death, others will ...have to wait.

I didn't know blood could be manufactured. i thought it had to be collected from donors.

Manufacturing is a bit of a misnomer in this instance. It does need to be collected from donors, but after that, it is tested and separated into constituent parts that are needed by each recipient. Blood still can not be made. It needs to be donated.
