American Shad fishing at Bonneville Dam 2021 - Landed 60 in 5 hours

Shad is here at Bonneville dam, Washington state. Although it's still at the early stage, I did pretty good. Landed 60 in 5 hours. Again, the most important trick for shad fishing is: Let the jig sink for about 8 to 10 seconds before reeling in, since the current is pretty strong, need time for the jig to deeper water where most shad are. Leave the comments if you have questions. I covered more detailed tips in my last video too.

You can hook shad all along that bank like that just need to fine the depth of the fish. use 1/2oz to 1oz depending on the current. The big females 22 to 24 inches long are deep will count a fast 20 seconds before reeling and cast fare out in the river if there are Hugh runs of them will not get deep enough the averge sizes will strike the dart before you get deep enough. The last 4 years I have caught them up in till 4 of July/ last year over 7million through the dam. will be there this coming this weekend.

Great information, Mark. I was using 1/2oz, but the current is pretty strong this time, I feel like 3/4oz will work better. I might go again in the next 2 weeks, let me know if you get some giant.

My friend and I were there the same day, but at a none ideal spot. Landed plenty of big ones. Shad spoon works as well as shad dart.

@@BashiWAFishing We arrived late and found an open spot at the midpoint between the dam and power towers. It was a testing day for different lures for me. Highly recommend Hardcore Shad Spoons with a light leader and a paper clip or hairpin anti snagging trick.

@@2600mx Thanks a lot for the information, I like spoon too, but they are usually not cheap. I only use 1/2oz weight, which helps to avoid the snagging.

what is the sinker weight and main line weight?

I'm gonna drive down from Seattle later this week. The shad count's been over 100k for a week now, should be great fishing. I've never fished for shad before, do you know how long you have to get the eggs out before it goes bad? I mainly want to know if I can wait until I get home to clean them, or if I need to get the eggs sacks out quickly to preserve quality.

I bleed them, and then put them into cooler with ice, I pull the egg out after I get home, should be good as long as you have ice in your cooler. Now is great time, let me know if you get some giants

Is there a limit for shad? Can we keep salmon if we hook up on one?

No, we don't have a limit in WA. For salmon, WA requires barbless hook in river. So if salmon is hooked, we have to release since shad dart has barb

@Hunter fishman Yes, report card is needed for salmon, any salmon fishing in the river needs a barbless hook

Are the shad still there? I know the season passed a little over the month but was wondering because I want to take son there to have some too

It's over, but there are a lot other fish there, you can just drop a crappie jig with small tube or just worm.

@@lokdawg5410 Sorry, I don't know a good spot for salmon fishing there. But I saw people fishing for salmon at Bonneville dam too.
