The bad news: If you cause an accident at this speed, you are always at least partially to blame, even if you haven't actually done anything wrong (e.g. another car switched lanes without looking behind). This is because the speed was above the recommended speed of 130km/h The good news: In a crash at 400 km/h you probably don't care anymore

There is a lot of untrue/outdated information out on the internet about this video, so just to clarify... :) - Per se this can be illegal no matter the lack of speed limit, since the German law against street racing can also be applied to "racing against yourself" (like driving as fast as possible) - He was initially charged with that, but the state attorney/prosecutor dropped the charges because the crew had made extra safety precautions for the video, such as posting look outs to see if the part of the Autobahn is clear enough and free of any dangers and using support vehicles (seen in the video) for the same reason.

A few key data about the vehicle: 7993cc 1500HP 1600Nm of torque The Chiron has a mid-engine with 16 cylinders and 1103 kW (1500 hp); which is around 50% more powerful than the engine in the Veyron 16.4. Also known as the W engine, the double-V engine with two VR8 cylinder banks has an eight-liter displacement and four turbochargers that are switched in two registers. At low engine speeds only two turbochargers work, at around 3800 revolutions per minute the other two are switched on.[5] The turbochargers are 69% larger than the Veyron's predecessor engine.[6] This results in improved engine response and, with the maximum torque of 1600 Newton meters between 2000 and 6000 rpm, linear performance characteristics.1 set of tires cost about 40,000€. At top speed they last about for 50 km.

To give a different perspective: The white dashes on the Autobahn measure 6 meters (19.6 feet), the gap between the dashes 12 meters. The white poles at the side of the road are 50 meters apart. And yes, everybody can drive fast on a straight road. I dare to say that he will not tackle the fastest lap times on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (for comparable vehicles). While it's not technically illegal to drive 400kph/250mph on the autobahn, you will be held responsible if you cause an accident due to abnormally high speeds, even if someone cuts you off and it wasn't really your fault. You don't even have to be involved in the collision, just scaring someone so much that they panic and subsequently cause an accident can get you accused. After all you are required to drive safely in any case, which is probably impossible at that speed.

True (both of you). But this is rarely enforced in reality. You will most likely not be able to proof, that someone who caused an accident, did in fact drove that fast. There are really only three options: 1 - a police car with calibrated speed detection tools was there and witnessed the accident, or 2 - the speedometer of the car that caused the accident, stored the speed when the accident happend. Or 3 - there are skidmarks that allow you to measure and calculate what speed the one who caused this was driving at (but there aren't always skidmarks, especially when the accident happened without anyone using their brakes) edit: had to add no. 3 - forgot about this method at first
@dnocturn84

@@chrstiania There is technically a tolerance, when it comes to speed measurements. 140 km/h is within tolerance range of cars that drive 130 km/h. So it doesn't really start at 140 km/h. You have to be at least at 150 km/h, maybe more, depending on how you measure it.

I’ve said this before but you have NO IDEA how dangerous this. It doesn’t matter how well you think German drivers are trained or how much you think you can trust their lane discipline….which isn’t always true either, by the way. As a dual national- British and German - I spend a lot of time driving from the UK to Germany and also driving the length of Germany from North to South. What people need to realise is that Germany is in the middle of border-free continental Europe. It’s Autobahn network is literally the crossroads of Europe and hence you have drivers from countries of ALL standards driving on these roads…..even Belgians! It doesn’t help you when you are at the Gates of Heaven, after massively ploughing into someone sitting in the outside lane who was doing 200kph when you were doing 400kph to say: “Well, he shouldn’t have been in that lane….” Your impact speed is still going to be 200kph….and you’re still going to be…..what do they call it now? No idea how the US-Traffic rules / laws are but in Germany they are more or less ordered by importance (the most important have the lowest "§" Number). And the first (and therefore "follow under all circumstances") rules are "How to behave in public traffic"-rules. Vage on one side but explicit on the other. Section 1 Basic rules (1) Use of the road requires constant care and mutual respect. (2) A person using the road shall act in such a way as not to harm or endanger or, more than is unavoidable in the circumstances, to hinder or inconvenience any other person. Theoretical you could charge the racer of the Chiron by §1(2) - "or endager" Then the "Rechtsfahrgebot" and driving on the right side of the road (that is also law in some of the US States but is seen as "I don't care" by american drivers) Section 2 Use of the road by vehicles (1) Vehicles must use the carriageways; on dual carriageways they must use the right-hand carriageway. Verges do not constitute part of the carriageway. (2) Drivers and riders must always keep as far to the right as possible, not only when traffic is approaching from the opposite direction, when being overtaken, when approaching the brow of a hill, on bends or when their view ahead is obstructed. And then the SPEED Section Section 3 Speed (1) A person operating a vehicle may only travel at a speed that allows them to be in constant control of their vehicle. In particular, they must adjust their speed to road, traffic, visibility and weather conditions as well as to their personal abilities and to the nature of their vehicle and its load. If, owing to fog, snowfall or rain, visibility is less than 50 metres, they must not travel faster than 50 kph; where circumstances so require, they must travel at a lower speed. Their speed must be such that they can stop within their forward range of vision. However, on carriageways that are so narrow that oncoming vehicles may be endangered, they must slow down so that they are able to stop within at least half of their range of forward vision. (2) No motor vehicle must, without good reason, travel so slowly as to impede the flow of traffic. (2a) The behaviour of persons operating vehicles towards children, persons in need of help and elderly persons must be such as to prevent any endangerment of these road users, especially by reducing their speed and being ready to brake. (3) The maximum permissible speed, even in the most favourable circumstances, is: 50 kph for all motor vehicles within built-up areas; outside built-up areas: a) 80 kph for aa) motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, with the exception of passenger cars; bb) passenger cars towing a trailer; cc) goods vehicles and motor homes, in both cases with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, towing a trailer; dd) buses and coaches, also when towing a luggage trailer; b) 60 kph for aa) motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes; bb) all motor vehicles towing a trailer, with the exception of passenger cars, goods vehicles and motor homes with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes in each case; cc) buses and coaches carrying passengers who have to stand because all the seats are taken; c ) 100 kph for passenger cars as well as other motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes. This speed limit does not apply on motorways (sign 330.1) and other roads with carriageways separated by a central reservation or other structures. Nor does it apply on roads with at least two lanes for each direction marked by a centre line (sign 295) or by lane markings (sign 340). (4) The maximum permissible speed for motor vehicles fitted with snow chains is 50 kph, even in the most favourable circumstances.

What is the braking distance when travelling at 400kph? Are seatbelts and airbags effective if you crash at this speed? If you check the rear vision mirror before changing lanes will you see and recognize the speed of a car approaching so fast? How long before do you need to signal a lane change for it to be useful?
@ICEToggle
@ICEToggle Жыл бұрын
1. Let's say you need 1 second of reaction time and decelerate with 2 Gs (wich is gonna be quite uncomfortable). This equates to roughly 6.6 seconds and 425 meters to a full stop. 2. If you'd hit a wall at that speed, the length of the car will likely compress to less than 1 meter. So there wont be much space for you inside, no matter the belt or airbag. 3. Hardly. During one second the car is travelling a distance of 111 meters. So from being a small dot in the mirror to having the car next to yours it takes maybe 2-4 seconds. This plus that you usually don't expect speeds this high (even on the autobahn). 4. At that speed unnecessary. See the 3rd point. That said, speeds like this, even on the autobahn, are far from common. No one is gonna expect it and it's really dangerous for both you driving and others. A "fast" speed you'll see more often (especially on the 3+ lane autobahns without speed limits) is 150 kph to 250 kph.

The rule of thumb (in km/h & m) for this is: Reaction distance + braking distance = stopping distance. For emergency braking: Reaction distance + (braking distance ÷ 2) = stopping distance. Reaction distance: (speed ÷ 10) x 3 (400÷10) x 3 = 120 meters Braking distance (emergency): [(speed ÷ 10) x (speed ÷ 10)] ÷ 2 [(400 ÷ 10) x (400 ÷ 10)] ÷ 2 = 800 meters Stopping distance (emergency) = 120 m + 800 m = 920 m (~ 3 018 ft.) Btw: For the German driver's license, you have to be able to use these formulas. You can be asked in the writing test as well as by the driving examiner.

While it may be cool to look at, let me put one thing out here. The fact that you are ALLOWED to drive that fast doesn't mean that you actually SHOULD. Especially tourists are often not used to such speeds and endanger others in the process. Yes, I understand this guy has taken some precautions, but that doesn't make it less inherently dangerous (for others more than for him, because he'd be relegated to the past-tense either way) in case of an accident.

Actually, going *this* fast on the autobahn ist not realy legal. It's considered being an illegal race (against the clock), because you were in no need to drive *that* fast to, in example, overtake another car. And yes, prosecutors were investigatin against the driver, but since he isn't a german citizen, it's hard for the authorities to get their hands (or cuffs) on him. Edit: I forgot to mention that it was illegal, because the driver didn't take the "Stay-as-far-right-track-as-you-can" rule serious. He was driving on the middle and left lane for way toooooo long, longer than necessary.
@bananenklops9738
@bananenklops9738 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion this is even illegal in Germany. You have to, in any situation, regardless of any speed limit, drive not faster then your surrounding allows to. With this speed, on a public road, with other vehicles driving around, that is definitely not the case anymore. No one is able to see how fast this Bugatti was, when it is just a tiny dot in the rear mirror. But with that tiny dot it would be already to late, if a car would take over on the left lane with 100-120km/h. No chance to break, no chance to dodge. That was like playing russian roulette with like 4 out of 6 bullets in the chamber. Except you don't only kill yourself, which would not be sad, but also kill other people.

Yes in Europe, at least France, Germany, Belgium, don't know all others, you are asked to drive to the rightest lane. So if there are 3 lanes, EVERYBODY must drive on the right lane. Thus middle lane and left lane are both empty. You use the left lane ONLY to overpass and THEN you come back on the right lane. Or all the lanes are used because there is a lot of traffic. It is TOTALLY FORBIDDEN to overpass on the right. If you do that, you are getting a ticket. Of course you must ALWAYS check your mirrors, to be sure there is not a stupid one who is overpassing you on your right when you are on a left lane and you go back to the right lane, but 95% of times, there is no one doing that. Doing a 400kph on a 2 lanes road would be suicidal, because at this speed, you are entitled to meet people driving at 130kph and overpassing a guy on the road. So if you arrive à 400kph behind him... But at the hour the video is taken, early morning or late evening, on a 3 autobahn lanes, with guys knowing the area, the traffic, AND driving on the left lane only, risk was minimal. But impossible to do that in USA as you said, because they drive everywhere, right, middle, or left. Doing that in USA would mean going straight to your last forever house. Thanks for the video. :)
