At 20:16 you passed our house. It's not confusing. I always find my house. It's the new part of Borne and it's a very nice neighbourhood. But now we are retired and we are moving to another part of The Netherlands 🇳🇱, 8000 km away. It's called Curaçao 🇨🇼. Just a little bit warmer 🌞

Its forbidden to bike on the sidewalk in the Netherlands. A Japanese friend of mine once said. "I always bike very polite on the sidewalks and everybody keeps looking angry at me". I said nohh you cant do that here😅 The reason why you dont see a bikelane in the beginning of the video is probably because its a 30km zone. Cars are driving slowly, then there is no need for a special bike lane.

Willow trees are very much water connected.. You can easily cut of a branch push in into wet soil or even water and it will start growing roots, E.g you can plant it in a double row , fletch other branches together fill the wall with earth, and it is turn into a willow ground wall great against wind and also sound damperning. Great natural wind break with a environment for wildlife. You can also cut off the top of a willow tree at around 2m.. turning the wilg (willow) into a knotwilg knot willow.. where the top sprouts a ton of new branches.. Repeated knotting results in a short tree with tons of branches.. These branches were harvested to make willow branch baskets, walls and other things with. They are a great source of aspirin related the painkiller in history.. Salicylic acid, which is in the plant is part of acetyl salicylic acid The willows latin name is Salix where salicylic acid is derived from .

We use (concrete or clay baked) roof tiles mostly because of structural reasons. For example I have a garage behind my house, which is 8 by 4 meters, and I put also roof tiles on there. I know how many I put there, and how much they weigh, on this wooden structure there is 1.5 tons of weight pressing down on the structure, making it actually more storm resilient. It makes both the building, but also the roof itself more storm proof. These concrete or clay baked roof tiles vary from 2 to 4 kilograms each and those are all interlocking. Special tiles with vents are placed to make sure that in case of a storm the sudden low pressure on the other side of the house (these roofs are just like airplane wings) negate the difference in air pressure, thus lowering the chance of the tiles being pushed off. These days also the roof tiles are being anchored as well, which makes these houses very storm resistent. Although I have to be honest I have no idea what would happen if a hurricane or a tornado would pass over them. Especially tornado's, most people's houses are not build for them.

The bit he enters around 18:25 are indeed as suburbian as it gets over here. The first houses seem to be relatively new and they indeed look alike. A general rule of thumb since somewhere around the 1950's (post war) seems to be that we build new neighborhoods by like 1 or 2 streets at the time using the same buildings and that around every 10 years the designs change. In this case the buildings look quite new and you see similar houses until he goes left around 20:00 and then you see that on the left side there are different (older) buildings in the street a little further on and all the ones on the left look somewhat the same. The remark about the ginormous hill at 23:00 and the far east being less flat.. There are quire a lot of towns in this area (I'm from here too) that end with "bergen" which translates to "mountains". Well, I can tell you.. Most of those "mountains" are not a tenth of the size of the monster seen in this video and pale in comparison to the average speed bump so I always wondered as to how they got to the names myself..

The canals like you see in Utrecht and Amsterdam are because how those cities grew over time. Amsterdam was built around the river and whenever it expanded, they had to manage the water. Some of the older castle cities might have some canals (they also sometimes have a star shaping). We don't really use shingles for residences, but sometimes used for sheds with flat roofs or garage roofs. The rattle could very well be from the wheels hitting the bricks. Another thing you might enjoy is a ride through of our biggest national park "de hoge Veluwe" or another national park "de Biesbosch" by boat.

Don't bother with pronouncing vocals in Dutch. But if you do, here is the rule. 1. Divide up the word in syllables (if more than 1 syllable). 2. Establish if the syllable ends open (with a vocal) or closed (with a consonant). 3. If it is open, the vocal gets long. 4. If it is closed, the vocal gets short. 5. If you want to have a short vocal with an open syllable, double the consonants after it. So HE-MA (open syllable, long e, the a is also open, so long a). Her-ma (closed syllable, short e). Pa-tat-ten (Pa is open, long a, -tatten, tt is double consonant, so short second a, and it ends with the very common "schwa" sound (sounds like "uh" and we usually do not pronounce the last "n" in a word if it comes after a "schwa".) Double vocals are always pronounced long.

6:44 for streets like this in somewhat denser, older neighborhoods especially with a lot of addresses that need street access (like shops), we often design the road as a shared/mixed use space. The pavers and other traffic calming measures promote slow traffic speeds. These choices are very deliberate and they work well. This type of street is generally very safe.

We recently moved to the center of Oldenzaal (8 miles from Borne). You really need to do a livestream tour of Oldenzaal. It was recently named the best municipality in the Netherlands. Oldenzaal is at least 1000 years old and received city rights in 1249, with some buildings here older than 700 years!

We call them vrachtwagens in Dutch, and I couldn't respond earlier because I had to get up at 3:00 AM to work. Yes, you got the picture right where I live, I make no secret of it. In the summer it is more beautiful as the trees are now bare, and in the summer there are also more people out and about, festivals, and many other things. I don't regret coming to live here, but it's a bit of a drama during carnival because it concerns that street and I really hate it. Unlike the USA, I can do everything on foot since I live in the center, and I only need the car for commuting and when I go to visit family or friends. And that's how it works in many cities and villages here in the Netherlands, very easy and no problem with parking, But thanks for watching Charlie! 😉

Thoughts on canals; there are different things all called canal in English. The thing all canals have in common is that they are man made. 1) there are the long haul transportation canals we call vaart or kanaal. Think also Erie canal over there. 2) there are the defensive canals around a town, a castle or a fort. I think Moat would be an English equivalent I think. We usually call them gracht and more specific, stadsgracht for a city moat or slotgracht for a castle moat. They are usually just outside the city or castle wall. 3) then there are the inner city canals. they are former defensive canals left behind when a city grew far enough beyond its walls to require a new wall and a new moat. They were often repurposed of in city goods transportation. 4) the last I want to mention are the canals intended to transport excesses of (high) water away. We call them afwateringskanaal which translates to drainage canal. Going back to the defensive canal. A vest or veste is a stronghold or a city wall and may have a moat. A vest (so without the final e) can also be a sleeveless upper body garment just like it is in English.

He-Ma consists of two syllables. Because the first syllable is open (not locked up by a consonant), you don't need double ee . It is pronounced the same as double ee. a short e, is never pronounced like you say. A short e is comparable to the e in the English word "let's".

6:40 It's based on the speed of the road/street and where it is located as well. 30 km streets tend to not have cycle paths. (within city limits) 50 km streets either have them painted or have a path. (within city limits) 60 km streets don't tend to have them but here they are mainly in the more rural parts. (outside city limits) 70/80 km roads always have a cycle path. (outside city limits) 100/120 km roads don't have cycle paths but also don't allow cyclist at all. (these are highways) (outside city limits)

It's where our navy is based, but it also has the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe, as well as our harbour being commissioned by Napoleon in like late 18th, early 19th century, which now serves practically unchanged - aside from modernisation - as our entertainment district. So you can have dinner or watch a movie in a harbour warehouse that's almost as old as the USA, lol.

A truck in Dutch is a vrachtwagen. A car that carry's al lot of weight. In Germany you call it a LKW last craft wagen. And Hema is spoken wit a Hema. We do nog write two ee because after a e and a Vowel but after that is a consonant. If a Vowel is followed with two consoneny then you have a short sound.

One man organized protests and the old town was mostly kept as it was.... At his door he couldn;t get his key in the door and there would be people livin'. We were at the right door nr. but at the wrong block in the wrong street ! 🤣🍻🎇 Most big houses here will be semi-detached with a garage, btw. ('2 under 1 roof') . And the water is a natural creek . A paved street is also an indicator that it is not a through road. 30 km = 20 miles. 5) That white bicycle, with the crate on the front rack, is a heavy bicycle. 6) Hema is pronounced as hayma

On pronunciation of vowels in Dutch. Most vowels in dutch hae e long and a short sound. There are two ways to indicate what sound is implied. 1) For vowels in the last syllable of the word there is the obvious rule of a doubled vowel is the long form and a single vowel is the short form. 2) For earlier sylables in a word there are different rules; they are usually single vowels but the amount of consonants behind them indicates if they are the short or the log form. when there is only one consonant behind it is the long form and when there are more consonants it is the short form. 3) the 'e' is a bit of a problem child as it is also used for the toneles vowel aka schwa. (somewhat like the 'e' in 'taken' in English) Then there are the two letter vowels which are a single sound ad not a dipthong, the eu, ei/ij, au/ou and ui. They have only one form and when followed by a consonant it will be a single one. As this is Dutch, all of these are expected to have exceptions.

Borne is a village. It's more then 400 years old. Also it's pronounced Borne and the last e is pronounced as you pronounce the e in Veste 21:58. You're not allowed to cyclical on the sidewalk. Although some people do.06:49. The curch is called de Oude kerk (the Old Church) 9:44. The area form 10:36 till 11:39 you not always allowed to cyclical there. And it is Heemaa. (Don't make me explain how this grammar works in English). It's the same Albert Heijn. 13:56 same church. Although Borne has more churches. Not all in used though. 14:52 That tropical plant is part of the decoration of a restaurant called De Mexicaan (The Mexican) and yes they make Mexican food. At 15:20 you enter oud Borne (old Borne) and it's the most historical area of Borne. And is build during the industrial revolution because of textile industry in Twente. 18:13 the most recent part of Borne. And And we differentiate our houses from each other by house numbers and how the garden and interior of the house. Yeah they are build at the same time. It's common now that small or big areas build at the same time look the same. It's more like a house development project. And sometimes if you purchase a lap of ground you can design your own house on it. The frieze flag is more often seen outside Frieslan. They are a proud bunch of people and like to show that. 21:03 In the house lives one family. Variations of mostly 2 or more people. 21:31 the water is a stream that is called de Bornse Beek(the Bornse Stream). Cannals in cities are for business in the old days. When transport by water was a fast way to do it. Deventer and Zwolle has cannals to. I hope you like the little information about Borne. And make more sense of the silent virtual tour of Borne. Also I hope I make sense with the timestamps. It's a little bit early.

In the Netherlands, bikers are "protected" so people anticipate on that in traffic. In Small towns like Borne you see brick roads more often, it takes the speed out so people are safer. In the street where you missed the bikers road, there is simply not enough room for it. Car drivers in the Netherlands are less demanding that the road belongs to them. 😊

It’s a very common thing though, almost every day i see people ignore those signs. Nice video anyway, gives you a good impression of the atmosphere of a typical village in the Netherlands. And no, cycling on the sidewalk is not permitted here, it’s only for pedestrians, cars have to share most roads without a bikepath. Living myself in this erea it is totally different than the west of the Netherlands. We don't have trams and metro's because most cities aren't that big. Many are between 20.000 - 40.000 inhabitants, than a whole bunch of small towns. Above 50.000 are by example Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo. There are bicycle-routes enough but more outside the cities. That doesn't mean in the centrums it would be bad for cyclists they have the same safety rules as everywhere in the Netherlands. The car is more needed I would say, we can't jump on a tram or metro system or even trains so there are busses. The connections are quite good, but because of the cars many bus-lines and busstops have been cut the last 20 years. But it looks that it has turned around again, especially for the old and invalid people it is a blessing. I train in the weekends on my race bicycle, within 20 minutes I cross the German border.

The canals (grachten) are to be found only in cities older then at least 700 years. Most of them in the western part of the country. Borne is just a small village in the country. In the netherlands we make a difference between 'grachten' and 'kanalen'. Must be a bit confusing i guess

I just looked it up. For comparison i chose Bremen in northern Indiana. Compared with that Borne is not 100 mls up north, it is exactly 1111 km more to the north, that might be somthing like 700 mls, and the whole northern Europe is far more north that American or Canadian Cities, in this case exact 10 degrees of latitude. But much warmer than the same latitude in your continent because of the Gulf Stream. So , about the same climate , but at 10 degrees of latitude more north here. And in the summer the sunset is as late as 10pm and the dawn itself lasts very long as well, about an hour then ,so that it's not fully dark till 11pm. And opposite in winter. Dark til 9 am and dark again at 4.30 pm already.

Limburg and like Nijmegen and Arhnem all East have hills. west and southwest do have the Canals and rivers. and in most centers there is a speed limit. like 30 km PH. Borne is nice but a lot of Dutch cities are like that. Try *Naarden* , thats a old *fortress city*

I live in the North East and it's also filled with canals, though there are way less than it used to be. The total length of the canals in the peat colonies and bogs in this area in total used to be longer than the great wall of China... But still there's a lot of them.

I'll do a bike ride through the Pekelas (Oude Pekels, Nieuwe Pekela and Boven Pekela) along the canal (or 'diep' as we call them here) as soon as the weather gets any better. Because it will be a 30 km ride. I'll keep you informed.

5:00 latitude is not really close to Indiana, Fort Wayne, Indiana is on lat. 41°N whereas Borne, Netherlands is 52.3°N. It's more like between Calgary, Canada (51°N) and Edmonton, Canada (53.5°N). A difference of about 900miles more north than you thought. But the weather is way more friendly in the winter, because of the warm Gulf Stream and no such cold draft from the Arctic.

No, on the sidewalk is not allowed. The red brick road indicates that it is a slower road, and cars have to drive slow.

Hey Charly, the different use of bricks is to let people (drivers) know in what sort of area they are. The rattle makes everyone drive more slowely. And afcourse we have a law that the car driver is always wrong in an accident.

Canals are everywhere in NL. I live in the east and we have canals. They were build to get all goods through the whole country by canals/waterways:) Also the prices of a Dutch bike is still rising. Also yes, that was a tropical plant. Palms and even banana trees can survive here. Also I agree with you, the modern architecture to let all new houses look like COPY+PASTE is horrible.

On the streets with no bicycle paths the speed limit is 30km/h, bikes on the road help calm traffic in those situations. As for a universe from nothing, no atheist that I'm aware of ever made that claim. Even Lawrence Krauss who wrote 'A universe from nothing' always ends up defining "nothing" as something.

7:00 biking on the sidewalk isn't allowed. Also most of the time there is no designated bike path in 30 kph zones. But like roads with a higher speed like 50 and 80 kph would have a designated bike path, because it's not allowed to bike on such roads.

This is quite a nice village. I will have to check out how far it is from where I live in Germany. Those houses you thought all looked the same and might be apartment buildings actually look very much like houses in England (where I’m originally from). BTW: I fully agree with you with regards to religion. I’m also agnostic and feel that there is some kind of creative power in the universe, but it doesn’t have much to do with the God in the Bible.
