Bloody love it. Australians have Vegemite which is very similar though a bit salty for me. You may wish to give Bovril a miss which is wise because it is horrible.

I'm ambivalent, really dislike on bread. But has in great within some dishes I've eaten. So much so I now put small amount in Ragu or Bolognese sauce if making these.

This was the best marmite taste test I’ve ever seen… Alas she put on too much for a first try and may have upset her lifetime enjoyment of Marmite. The second attempt should have been the first… Marmite haters basically put too much on their first try. Amazing video tho, loved it ❤

Marmite is one of those things I seldom think about when thinking of a snack, but whenever it is mentioned, I get a carving for it. So I am now off to prepare a slice of toast with some marmite.

@@lottie2525 there was one last year - a “drawn” Elton wearing one of his famous stage jackets with huge ostrich feathers on each shoulder… you know how Elton doesn’t want to bring attention to himself, so he chose an understated stage costume…. Don’t know what next year’s will be like - a top secret on pain of death until the launch deal! 😳😁

Congrats on going for it. The amount you put on the second slice - enough to just colour the butter - was the correct amount for a first-timer. It just makes the butter yummier. I don't know anyone who tried Marmite as an adult and liked it. I tried Vegemite as an adult and think it tastes like I imagine a mystery black stain on the floor of a garage would taste. Love Marmite, though. LOVE IT.

Marmite is the British version of MSG. It has a very umami flavour, which enhances lots of other foods. Try adding a tiny bit the next time you're cooking mushrooms.

Par boil your potatoes mix in a tablespoon of marmite until all potatoes are coated and then roast them, yummy. I have given blind taste tests to "haters" and so far 100% prefer these to normal roast potatoes

Great to take a jar when doing fieldwork (I am a geologist) with Americans. It really perks up bland food, but Americans assume it is something like nutella and it is hilarious to watch them eat it.

An alternative to Marmite are Twiglets, which I think are covered in a superior tasting yeast soead. Maybe you should try these, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Today I've been in the UK for 20 years! So exciting. I come from a Commonwealth country though, so grew up with marmite. My favourite way to eat is on fresh, soft white bread, not toast. Liberally buttered and an infinitesimal amount spread thinly, like your second slice. Sometimes I like it with very thinly sliced tomatoes, or added to devilled eggs. They say to acquire a taste for something you are ambivalent about you should have it 20 to 30 times before you'll enjoy it, so don't give up. And you really only need the tiniest amount. A bottle that size lasts a few years in my home.

I'm in my late fifties and I only just started to eat it recently - on crumpets. I'm gradually increasing the amount. I know you're supposed to love it or hate it, but I will just say that I like it.

You can always use up your Marmite by adding a little to stews, casseroles and soups. It adds a salty richness.

I like Marmite peanut butter as well as Marmite. I also put a dollop of Marmite in hot water to make stock for soups or stews.

The challenge is you need to do the whole thing when the toast is piping hot as this melts the butter and makes the marmite easier to spread

I’m SO jealous of you, trying Marmite for the first time! It is the ‘luxury’ that I would take on my ‘Desert Island’. I had Marmite sandwiches for the first 7 years of my working life, literally day! I simply don’t understand those who dismiss this ambrosia. You didn’t put on ‘too much’, you should have enough to take the skin off the roof of your mouth! I bloody LOVE Marmite!

That's a good start. In a few days you'll probably finding yourself craving the taste. It may take a while of nibbling more each time. Some of us were weaned on Marmite soldiers! A good gentle gateway, rather than starting off mainlining Marmite toast, is the savoury snack Twiglets (twig-like sticks of biscuit with brown blotches). The flavouring isn't strictly Marmite but it is yeast extract. Cats go crazy for Marmite and you know how fussy they are about food.

Try it with a slice of cheddar on top of the toast and butter. I loike it, I don't eat it that often though. My usual way is a bases for cheese on toast. 1) Toast one side of the bre4ad under the grill (broiler for US peeps) 2) spread butter on the untoasted side make sure you go right up to the edges - this will help stop the crusts from burning so fast later. 3) Now add Marmite, a thin layer, like the 1st slice in this video. 4) Add grated mature cheddar cheese. 5) Add salt and pepper. 6) Add a good splash of worcestershire sauced. 7( back under the grill until the cheese is melted, I like it just melted, but you can let it co until the cheese is browned and bubbling. Cut and eat.

The weirdest thing about my relationship with Marmite is that I like twiglets but hate Marmite as a spread. It's a good ingredient for meat gravies because, like soy sauce, it is salty and umami.

The true Marmite aficionado is someone who is given Marmite soldiers as soon as they are weaned off of milk and on to solids. Start 'em young and they become a life-long Marmite lover. Just because you don't like it spread on toast, I would still thoroughly recommend you put a good teaspoon full into your beef broth or spaghetti bolognaise.

I'm British and didn't try Marmite until I was in my late 20s. Well, I missed out, because it turns out I love Marmite. I'd say you put the right amount on the first slice. I was a fussy eater as a kid, but these days I'll eat, or at least try, most anything. At least you tried it Kalyn.

as to how use the rest of the jar: Marmite makes a really good addition for things like stews, adds a bit of umami. Also works great with stuff like tofu. Don't worry though, the dish won't actually taste of Marmite

Fun video. You should try next, my favourite spread for toast, Elsenham's Patum Pepurium, The Gentleman's Relish. It has been around since 1826 and was famous for its painted jars.

I can confirm that a very small amount of marmite ( about a quarter or half of your second attempt) in a mature cheddar cheese sandwich enhances the cheese taste of the sandwich.

I only ever have Marmite on toast (with butter) and I love it. You turned your nose up at adding Marmite to a stew, but if you put a small amount in it could affect the taste for the better and you would not notice it as Marmite. Well done for trying and also well done for not giving up when the first one was not to your liking.

It's great added to stews and soups, kinda similar in a way to soy sauce as it adds a deep umami flavour. I've never been keen on it on sandwiches myself, but it is a great cooking ingredient.

it all depends on how you use it and eat it, i use it in gravy, savory sauces, on toast, on crumpets, cheese sandwiches, on cheese on toast, dilute with soy sauce and sprinkle over spag-bol... also there are other brands of marmite and some not so strong and just as tasty. also marmite isnt the only brand, there are other brands of yeast extract, natex, meridian etc... Morrisons and Tesco have their own store brand of yeast extract. you can also get bovril which is marmite and beef paste... which is very tasty...

Hi your second piece of toast is how i do marmite and have two slices, judging the amount to put on is the key, also if you use it in cooking namely stews, casseroles and the like for winter food, again do not put in a large amount do small amount wait a few minutes then taste, then add more if you need to. well done for trying, if doing it again cool toast so butter does not melt as it helps dilute the flavour.

I grew up on it - it is like nectar to me - and I always have a jar in the cupboard. Also, add a teaspoon of it to a bolognese, it adds a really nice kick. If you have a cold, a teaspoon in a mug of boiling water - yumm!

If you find the taste too pungent you may prefer vegemite. Its the same taste but a tiny bit less powerful. Still a strong taste though.

I enjoyed the tension! 😂You put on the perfect amount for a first try. Most reactors put it on like chocolate spread! I'm probably getting on for double your age, and I still can't eat it. I never used to like Twiglets either, but I love them now. It's a good ingredient for things like stews etc., as it adds a lot of umami flavour. That's the only use it has in my house!

My step-mother's first job was as a receptionist for the London Guinness factory. One of her duties was letting in the Marmite people to scrape the residue from the vats. Having seen the process, she refuses to eat Marmite on principle.

I think a lot of variation is down to the container it is bought in as they respond to heat differently and might let it dry out differently

The way you spread it first was correct. It's also great with scrambled eggs on top. It's also great in sandwiches ;) It's possible you are right about only loving it if you had it as a child - it was always a staple in our house. Plus, avocados (including all it's variations e.g. guacamole) is disgusting LOL!

My experience is that the flavour of Marmite appears to change when I have had various forms of minor illness, so I'm wondering if it is one of those flavours that changes as we age, ie it is actually our taste buds changing over time and conditions.

You could finish that jar by continuing to dilute the Marmite to homeopathy levels, but at that rate, you'll be passing it on in your will. Alternatively, add a spoonful to savoury meals. It hits the salt and umami tastebuds, like adding MSG.

Good for making veggie French Onion soup. I use a teaspoon in a mug with pepper and maybe a wee bit of chilli sauce. Top up with boiling water.

I love Marmite and have it on toast every morning. The amount you put on is about ideal for a beginner. I put about 4 times that amount. Stick with it as you'll come to love it. One of life's greatest "small" pleasures is opening a brand new jar of Marmite and taking the first knife full.

Well, I suppose some tastes are acquired. Now I am A Marmite addict I suppose. Now well over 70 years old and cannot remember at what age I first ate it. During Covid here in Canada, like many things, shelves emptied out as binge buying started up. One of those things was Marmite. I didn’t think that anyone other than Brits enjoyed this, and I am an ex-Brit. So I had not anticipated that Marmite would disappear. I now make sure I always have at least 5 jars in the cupboard as I will not miss my pre-bed snack! My dogs enjoy sharing my Marmite on toast, though, maybe dogs eat anything humans will swallow down!

Hello Kalyn, Congratulations on trying this as you were scared ! And you made what some people may think a trivial subject dramatic. There were tense moments when I thought you were not going to try it. You may be right about the proportions - the first try was pretty Marmite-heavy and maybe you could have played safe with more butter. It may be like beer, we don't like the first taste but go along with and power through because we know it's for the best ! But I put it to you, you surely don't know what the contents of a warehouse floor tastes like ?

I love it!, however if you don't like it on things and you don't think you'll ever use a whole jar, just add it to stocks, soups, stews and sauces. It makes a great stock.

I love Marmite. Everyday for breakfast I have a Marmite cheese bite, which is similar to Baby Bel. One of my favourite ways of eating Marmite is in a cheese sandwich. It’s also great on chocolate digestives. Marmite crisps are also great but hard to find.

I tried it for the first time this year. I've had vegemite a long time ago and didn't like it but couldn't remember exactly what it tasted like. I still can't decide whether I like Marmite or not. I have some now and then because I've got a jar of it to finish.

I've never seen anyone butter the toast before the marmite. Nothing makes it taste better as it is vile. The yeast extract is actually a waste byproduct of brewing, which is why Marmite is based in Burton on Trent and the London plant closed when most of London's breweries closed.

I think there is a fair chance that you will be a marmite addict by the end of the year. The second piece was about the correct amount; sometime in Autumn you will be making a piece of toast when you will feel a need for a tiny amount of marmite spread on top.

Have you tried Vegemite the Australian version. And is it any better than Marmite.

Marmite is a bit sharp when eaten raw. Try a teaspoon in Chilli Con Carne etc. Also worth grilling/air frying bread for three minutes then spread butter and marmite on the uncooked side and grill for a further three minutes. Bon apetit.

Crumpets+butter+marmite+melted cheddar. Can't get a much better snack than that in my opinion. Marmite and peanut butter together is also tasty on crumpets😃

I’m not sure if I’ve ever tried Marmite but a few years ago I tried one of the supermarkets own version (I think it was Morrisons) and found it very reminiscent of an extra mature cheddar and quite enjoyed it. I didn’t by Marmite as it had wheat in the ingredients and I’m intolerant of that. But yeah, I honestly felt that the way the flavour bounced around the back of my mouth was like a really good really strong extra mature cheddar.

I seem to remember I was seven when I tried Marmite for the first time, that was a long, long time ago and I haven't had it since. Maybe I should try again.

It is an acquired taste, I do like it, I just can't work out how or why I acquired it. Your 1st try, you should not have gone for a 2nd knife full. Your 2nd try, the toast was cold, and that was a lot of butter, but nice try. It works well with tastes you like, so if you like peanut butter, adding a little marmite can be good, similar for cheese. Being warm (so warm toast) seem to help. Crumpets are good with butter and a scrap of marmite nice video.

I can eat (and have in the past eaten) Marmite, but since discovering Bovril (beef, rather than yeast extract) I am now a Bovril lover and a Marmite tolerator. You should try the same test on toast using Bovril instead? (Bovril also makes a great warming drink).

That was so funny. You made it perfectly so it was a fair test, the first one, not the second. I knew you wouldn't like it, Americans rarely do. I absolutely love Marmite and am off to get some now, salivating in anticipation. I can eat it much thicker and will lick the knife. Oh and you should have it with a cup of tea - of course.
