This was a Tribute Song to the lost soldiers of WWII. Russia 🇷🇺 lost more soldiers than any other Country. 😢❤ I absolutely love Diana’s patriotism and genuine respect for her country. I don’t agree with many leaders but I as an Indigenous Native American woman love my ancestral home. I don’t admire many of our own disappointing leadership presently but I pray 🙏🏽 for all of us. You found out on why she made that cover on your own so i will just add a couple of details for you. This is a very old army marching song and it does sound like a marching song mainly sang by soldiers, Diana transformed it in to this melodic piece to honor the Russian victory day. The cap she leaves at the end with the flowers belonged to her grandfather (her foster families grandfather) who indeed fought in the second world war so she honors him as well as the rest of heroes of that period of history.

This song is from the thirties of the last century. It was performed as a marching patriotic song. The military choir also sang at the holidays. They always sang in a rhythmic style, Diana sang in her own folk style. This cover is for the day of victory over fascism.

A bit of historical context. In the beginning of the 20th century the Russian Empire was indebted to international (mostly French) bankers. When the WW1 broke out the Russian Empire had no choice but to pay those debts in blood fighting on the side of France in a war that had nothing to do with Russia. Russian people, peasants and workers, did not understand why they had to die for some lands on the border of Germany in France which names they did not even know and could not pronounce, and African colonies they could never find on a map. The Russian Empire was also weak economically (kept weak by being indebted to those international, mostly French, bankers who dictated Russian economic policy) and because of that Russia was losing on the frontlines, badly. For every small victory we paid double and triple price. All the while the bankers were happily robbing Russian resources inside Russia. By the beginning of 1917 those French and international bankers were unsatisfied with the rate by which the robbing of Russia was going, and by Russia's performance in the war. The Russian Tsar was weak and ineffective and the Russian monarchy itself was in a way of fully privatizing Russian assets and throwing lives of Russian people into the cogs of the war machine. So the bankers and their puppets forced the Tsar to give up the throne, by the applause of the traitorous part of the Russian Orthodox church and the rich Russian elites. They were anticipating the robbing and the warring to go smoothly from that moment on. However in October of 1917 the Russian people, peasants, workers, and soldiers (the remnants of the Russian Army that by that time had been all but destroyed and fully demoralized), who were tired of dying, had a mutiny. They overthrew the bankers' puppet government and took power for themselves. So this is where the song's story comes in. In the beginning of 1918, when the bankers realized they had lost power for real, they organized a trans-national invasion of Russia. Fourteen (14, yes, you read that correctly, fourteen) countries had invaded Russia. That list of invaders included Britain, France, and USA, all super-powers of that time. They plundered our lands, murdered our people and put them in concentration camps (yes, concentration camps, Nazi-style), all the while pretending that they were helping "true Russian patriots", the White Army of former tsarist Generals who each saw themselves as a military dictator, and acted accordingly, with thousands of executions of the common Russian folk. At one point in time Russia was reduced to basically the Moscow and central regions. The North, the West, the South, the East of Russia were ALL under foreign military control. The newly born Russian Soviet Republic had to rebuild its army from the disarrayed WW1 soldiers and peasant and worker volunteers. This had become the Red Army. And this Red Army of beaten up soldiers, workers, and peasants then proceeded to repel the invaders on all fronts. It sounds unbelievable, but this is true. One Red Army, born literally yesterday, had beaten Armies of 14 countries plus the armies of the White Tsarist generals. This song is about this Red Army, the Red Army that achieved its first victory. The Red Army then repeated this heroic deed by repelling another bunch of trans-national invaders in 1945. This is why Diana sings this song for the Victory Day holiday.
