Indonesian are born bilingual at least, then learn English in school and other Foreign language as German, Japanese or French in high school. I learned German in high school. I speak Indonesian, Javanese, English, Romanian, currently learning Italian. I am working in German company. Yeah, most Indonesian are multilingual
@joinmeng
@joinmeng 9 күн бұрын
I think part of the reason why is because we Indonesians are very easy to pronounce words from other languages. Most of our parents speak Indonesian and their regional language, but for us the newer generation I'd say we can pronounce English, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch, and German easier than our Thai or Vietnamese friends, let alone the East Asians. Our tongue is just so flexible to be adapted to other languages.

@@joinmeng Nah, the simple reason is because we got taught in billingual since we were little. Talking with our mother tongue at home, and bahasa indonesia at school. This is actually one of our unique traits, and it makes me sad thats indonesian tend to feels inferior about their mother tongue that they're only mentioned bahasa indonesia as the language they're fluent with (and english).
@joinmeng
@joinmeng 9 күн бұрын
@@SetuwoKecik I wasn't taught at home but I picked up English and Mandarin because of my parents, and I learned German in high school and French in university pretty easily. I'm not talented, but my friends and I quickly realized how easy it was for us to study new language, or rather, new words and pronunciations. Right now I'm learning Korean and it is definitely a lot harder than Mandarin, but still, compared to our American and European friends, it is definitely easier for us Indonesians to pronounce it.
@SetuwoKecik

Being bilingual is a norm for Indonesians, and the more access to the internet nowadays makes us more fluent in english as well, becomes trillingual as the result.

Kudos to you for learning our language but you have to look inside and try to learn one of the filipinos' regional languages as well. Your country is also linguistically diverse as ours, so its good to learn about them first. Us indonesians got taught "preserve the regional languages, prioritize the national language, and master the foreign language." ☺

I am Indonesian that speak Bahasa Indonesia (for sure), English, Brazilian Portuguese and Latin America Spanish. In addition I also speak my local language also as Javanese. We (Indonesian) are born as a bilingual at least. We speak our national language, Indonesia, and also our tribe/ethnicity/race/area has their own language or traditional language because Indonesia has many numbers of those things. For me, it's Sundanese because Sunda is my race/ethnicity. We use Indonesia language to communicate with other people in different race/ethnicity/area (for example, I, Sundanese, use Indonesia to speak to Javanese, Malay people in the country). Then we learn English in elementary school and highschool. Almost all schools in Indonesia have English as their subject. Even sometimes, high school has two subjects of languages, English and the other (like, Chinese or Japanese) as English still a must.

indonesian are just naturally born polyglot. our parents speaks bahasa indonesia and their native languages (mine are javanese and banjarese), our school and online communities teach english, most of us are muslims so we speaks arabic in our mosque school, most of us learns german/chinese/japanese/spanish in high school (mine was chinese) even though i’m not fluent at that after high school, and naturally bahasa indonesia doesn’t have any strong accent to hold back from fluently speaks any foreign language. so yeah, if we do the counting i do speaks 6 languages, bahasa indonesia, javanese, banjarese, english, arabic, and chinese.

From what I heard, Indonesians are actually one of the most favored foreign labor force in East Asian countries because of how adaptible they are to new languages compared to most other countries And yet despite this, and being the 4th most population in the world, the Indonesian diaspora in other countries is also one of the smallest in the world. Most Indonesians would choose to go back to Indonesia instead of staying permanently in the countries they worked/studied in. I always find it interesting how one of the most equipped people in the world to do well outside of their country, is also the people with one of the strongest nesting culture ever. Indonesia could easily become as world famous as Thailand or the Phillippines if only they're more willing to stay in the country they work/study in for the international media to see more of their culture on a daily life basis, and make Indonesia more known
@klaraAlb
@klaraAlb 6 күн бұрын
Well historically, there weren't many slave/labour forces from Indonesia 'exported' to other countries during the Dutch colony other than The Netherlands itself and Suriname. Also in general, most Indonesians grew with a very very high family/community value oriented. It makes them feel the need to keep coming back despite their successfulness abroad or the then ugly-state of its country/government. They are very rooted and bonded to their family/friends. I for one, currently live abroad and always dreaming to live outside the country, but will be back to Indo in 2 years time. Never tought that the distance will only make you love and miss, not everything, but most of it. As an Indo, i speak Bahasa Indonesia as native, my local language Sundanese, English my second, learnt Deutschland/German at school and took 4-years course with it, and speak daily Japanese.
@blubirbs
@blubirbs 6 күн бұрын
The reason why most people go back than stay in the countries they worked/studied in is paperwork. It's it's hard to get working visa or PR because our country is just that weak w/ foreign relations that it's a lot easier to just go back than fight to lengthen the stay.

Indonesian people actually born bi-lingual because we learned speak mother tongue : Javanese/ sundanese/etc at home, at school we learned : Bahasa Indonesia (generally) and then we learned English too. When we grow up we learned another language such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thailand, Germany, Spain, Italian or Arab. That's why Indonesian people can understand what our mother said with their dialect and what people said in their own language. So you can say that Indonesian people are multilingual.

Any Indonesian kid will speak at least 2 language (Indonesian and local language) and maybe English (at least understand some of it). And quite a lot of Indonesian is polyglot in most wider variety. Some understand European languages such as English, French, German, Dutch, etc. Some will understand eastern languages like Chinese, Korean, Japanese. Some also understand languages like Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, etc I myself capable of speaking Indonesian (as a native tongue). English (fluent) French (been too long not speaking it actually but still understand it) Arabic (at least basic form), and 2 local languages (Sundanese and Javanese). So yeah........ in Indonesia there is always somebody you can speak fluently. One way or another

Jokes aside, all those things you've mentioned can be considered as "bahasa", if not "dialect". So which "bahasa" did you referring to at the first one?

@@SetuwoKecik i was born in japan 2004 my mom is Japanese and my father sundanese. I prefer japanese for my first language, but I raised in indonesia so I choose indonesia as a first language, and I'm not really much speaking in japanese even my moms Japanese, now she can speak indonesia good enough and also a little bit of sundanese too

I’m also Indonesian who speaks more than 2 languages. I speak fluent English, Indonesian as well, and also Javanese as my daily conversational language. For additional, I speak basic Korean and Japanese for business purposes since I’m currently working at 4 stars hotel. And I can say that I’m proud being a polyglot without even having a formal courses since I was a kid. So, I think that being multilingual in Indonesia is a common thing because our people are actually fast learners.

local languages are actually has different meanings with dialect. Dialect is just uhmm different in accent just like the American said "a" more to e and so on. Javanese, minang, and other local language just different
@dap6339

@@rhea2811 that maybe what we call it "accent". While "local dialect" is more than an accent. It has its own rules and vocabularies, simply like a language as we know normally.
