Thanks for this. I wish there was a channel showcasing the equivalent for 'made in GB' (the nearest is Geckota I guess). I think its really important - I imported to GB a Bertucci watch largely because it had a made in USA movement. Anyhow, how tough is it to achieve 'made in USA' for a watch? Does a manufacturer have to source the case, crown, strap etc in the USA? Thanks - and happy Hanukkah; all the best for 2024.

Pretty much everything has to be made here. Its not a situation where companies like Sinn or Laco can have their dials made in Hong Kong, movement bought from the Siwss or Japanese, and case components outsourced to other german or asian manufacturers and call it "made in Germany". For a watch to be considered "Made in USA", the FTC (Federal Trade Commissions) definition of "made in USA" is all or virtually all components must be made here. You can probably get away with leather strap from abroad from example but the case, the movement and most likely the crystal would have to be made here. Within the movement, small components like rubies might be able to be imported but its pretty stringent otherwise. France is another example of a country where the "made in" label is basically useless. Yema basically doesn't make anything in France at all, even their "In house" movements yet they can label all of it as "made in France". Companies like Shinola have gotten in trouble for even alluding to being "Made in USA while just assembling them here from kits and even Fine Timepiece Solutions mentioned by Marc in the video are reluctant to label their movements as "Made in USA" as they get some components from overseas despite finishing, assembling and adjusting them here.

@@helloworldstein even "Swiss Made" is not safe from those loopholes, i wonder how much of a luxury watch like Rolex or Longines is actually "Swiss Made" and how much is outsourced to countries with cheap labour.

I’m about as proud of an American as you can get, and I definitely will pay more for “American Made,” but there is a limit of course. Very big of you to feature their watch. It’s a beautiful watch (way out of my price range of course). BTW, I love your new commercial. “Watches are jewelry for men!” Ha! Love an honest businessman!

I'm completely rejiggering my collection to be as local as I can. I've already got a Vero Open Water Broadway LE, and I'm from Portland, so can't be much more local. Stohlman is now on my radar for when I get to there. My next acquisition is the Dufrane Waterloo Rose Gold and Hammered Copper. Ideally, I'd get watches that were designed, manufactured, assembled, etc. in the US, but for now, that's more dream than reality, but there's definitely a Weiss in my future as well.

It’s great to see a resurgence of the watch building craftsmanship in the US. It’s less to do about made in the USA and more about expanding the industry to accommodate new ideas and designs. The FTC has put these watchmakers at a disadvantage market-wise.

I absolutely love this watch! I'm not really a dress watch kind of person but this watch is beautiful. I just wish I had been aware of it sooner. At this point of the year in the holiday season, money has already been spent and allocated on other things. I hope he will still be making a similar watch in the future when I do have the money available and am ready to buy one.

Maybe some of these assembled in USA companies could try & source key components from the USA and then have part of their website that explains the province of key parts. There are a number of German watch companies who although they don’t have German or “in house” movements, they make the case, dial etc (eg Dekla watches). There is a USA Audio company called Schiit Audio who assemble their products in the USA & use as much American made components as much as possible - they can’t say “Made in USA” due to DACs, microprocessors etc from Japan/China, but on their site it says where the chassis, boards are from in the USA

Great looking very vintage inspired watch. I do appreciate brands that do US assembly and would love to see a new "Made in the USA" watch one day. Would love to see more US made movements. I think the US needs a resurgence in our manufacturing and not just in the world of watches. Although I also kinda find the FTC definition for "Made" maybe a bit over the top and feel like there are probably several watches that should already qualify for that title. Obviously the Swiss and Japanese aren't as strict. In my head something like this should qualify.

Oh, Marc. What a difficult question. Not difficult ethically. I know that safe working conditions and fair wages are, well, safe and fair. And worse, I know that I should prioritize them. But do I? Not at all. I’m like hundreds of millions of other Americans who buy cheap, relatively well-made Chinese (and other country) goods - including watches - all the time. So, theoretically, I’d love to buy this watch, whose price includes fair wages and safe working conditions. But, unless I get a big dose of ethical motivation, I’m not going to. And the only answer I have is that I am selfish. That’s not a good look. You asked. BTW I love the Brueget numerals. Always classy.
