As Johnston continues to move his forces South towards Atlanta to protect the railroads from Sherman, he lays what he thinks will be a perfect trap in the narrow mountains of Northwest Georgia. Familiar with the territory, Sherman instead prepares his forces for 20 days of marching, and swings to Johnston's left, setting up the battles of New Hope Church, Pickett's Mill and Dallas.

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I look forward to these outstanding videos. Thank you all for the work you do. I’m retiring at the end of May and heading out with my son to see these places I’ve only read about since I was 7 years old.

Guys, now you are in my neighborhood 😎 I am so happy the Atlanta Campaign is getting the spotlight in this series. Decision In The West by Albert Castel is the most comprehensive, most detailed account of the campaign. Thank you for all you do for Battlefield Preservation!!

Kris, You might not have thought that someone from Utica, NY watches this series, but here I am. I grew up about a half-mile north of where General Herkimer and the Tryon County Militia crossed the Mohawk river on the way to relieve the siege of Ft. Stanwix. In 1860 Utica had a population of 22,529. Utica is part of Oneida County, which supplied five infantry regiments to the US Army (14th, 26th, 97th, 117th, and 146th NYVI Regiments) as well as filling out many other mixed regiments. A little known book written by a soldier from the Utica area is "Dear friends at home, The Civil War Letters and Diaries of Sergeant Charles T. Bowen" of the 12th US Regulars. He participated in 15 battles and was never wounded.

LOL on the monologue about eating dinner with Joe Hooker. I do not know. i may believe what he says as long as it is not something he is promoting himself about. I happen to like Hooker as a soldier. He has a better record than many of both sides who have better modern reputations.

There is a movement, mostly by one individual, to reclassify Pickett's Mill as a Union victory. The basis is that because Johnston eventually retreated after a week on the lines, Pickett's Mill should be seen as a Federal win. He even had the "Confederate Victory" sign removed from the park. In my opinion, this is a flawed interpretation. The Battle of Pickett's Mill fought on May 27th was a Confederate victory. Yes, the action that occurred on the park's land after May 27th should be interpreted more, but that doesn't change what happened on May 27th. Look at it this way. Should we consider Kennesaw Mountain to be a Confederate victory because Johnston retreated a week later? Of course not. We should not let modern politics influence our interpretation of history. I'm all for re-examining primary sources and new data, but reclassifying Pickett's Mill as a Union victory doesn't pass that test. Chris Cash has done a great job in researching the role of the cavalry at Pickett's Mill and bringing more sources to light. They fought harder than previously given credit for, especially in light of newly found casualty figures. Go visit the park if you can. Its a great battlefield and excellently preserved!
