Dennis Frye takes you to the eastern most monument on the Antietam Battlefield, placed by veterans in 1910 next to the Newcomer Farm, before taking a walk to one of the most scenic panoramic views of the entire battlefield. Frye also dissects Robert E. Lee's troop movements in the middle of the battlefield. (And yes, we were using a windscreen!)
Frye is a retired Park Ranger and is a Co-Founder of the American Battlefield Trust. Garry Adelman is the Chief Historian at the American Battlefield Trust.
This video is part of our battlefield tour series commemorating the 159th Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. You can view the whole playlist here: • Unknown Antietam: 159t...
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Dennis Frye is one of the most intelligent men I've ever witnessed in my life. The Man if absolutely fascinating along with the guy who did the Petersburg series. We are lucky to have them.

A really interesting site VERY close to Antietam and in particular near where they are is the site of the Battle of Shepardstown, WV just a few miles from the video. It was fought immediately after Antietam and was an extremely complex and compelling little battle. Kinda like a Balls Bluff type thing. There are numerous physical remains of structures that stood during the battle and outstanding first hand accounts. One PA unit, the 118th I think, was almost annihilated. There are also a few standard monuments and markers there. Really cool and off the beaten path site. The battlefield trust has preserved a nice chunk of the site.

Thank you for this. Could you please do a video of McLellan's HQ and how little he could see from there? I was always astounded about how far he was from the battlefield, even visually.

I enjoy your video presentations and am able to take advantage of trips to both Gettysburg and Antietam quite often. One thing I would ask - please have your camera pan around at times especially when the speaker is pointing off in a different direction. This would give the viewer much better perspective.

Antietam is another one that is awesome to see. It was even more poignant for me to stand on many of those spots where the photos of dead soldiers were taken, some of the first photos that showed the public what the war was really like. I have a request when you all get around to it...South Mountain!

Great presentation. Some great information. I'm hoping to be able to go to Antietam later this year. I've recently found out that I have family history in that area from before the Civil War. Christian Orndorff (Spelled Orendorff now a days) is an ancestor of mine.

Ah, the 3rd Indiana Cavalry. If any here are fans of the old fictional western TV show "The Rifleman," you may remember that Lucas McCain was an officer for one or more of the Indiana cavalry units. I think in several episodes the unit claimed varied and may have included the 3rd cavalry, but whatever the units they were all from Indiana. I think the one mentioned the most was the Indiana 19th Cavalry, but I think that unit was only infantry not cavalry. So if McCain was with the 19th Indiana Infantry he "fought" at South Mountain and at Antietam. This is just a fun "fact" for ye ole TV western fans of yore! Another favorite (of mine) in those days was Paladin of "Have Gun Will Travel." He also was a union cavalry officer having graduated from West Point. Maybe he was in the 3rd Indiana? Paladin was a no nonsense dandy, I loved his character. He may have been in the same West Point class as Custer which would have meant he graduated higher than Custer. I don't think the show ever mentioned his name, so again it is hard to check the "facts" of his class ranking. :>) I remember "Johnny Yuma" also from TV's western days. "Johnny Yuma was a rebel" as the song went. I don't remember too many of the episodes, (the above shows had many reruns) but after the war he still wore his reb uniform from place to place. Got him trouble sometimes too. I remember he was in a Texas unit, my home state. I don't know which regiment, but he may have been duking it out 159 years ago today! Despite that furious battle all those years ago, all these guys survived and shot up a few bad characters to help tame the west. Great tour guys! I'm a recent subscriber.

How many troops did McClellan have on the field and when? The road could only have been sunken by long use. Did McClellan have any idea Harpers Ferry was so threatened? I greatly appreciate your dedication to connecting the dots in our history. It has helped me immensely. Thank you
