beautiful documentary, when you strip the complexities and conflicts of politics...people are people...music is our universal unifier

Yes, after playing Arirang, I could see that it was touching their souls. People are people. Great job NY Philharmonic! Really enjoyed watching this video.

The NK Cultural Minister at 21:54 is a very funny and gregarious guy. I can tell that he's very popular with both NKoreans and foreigners. He died 3 years later and his biographical blurbs always mention the NY Philharmonic visit, which he had a big role in arranging. This was probably the biggest coup of his career.
@TheMoonandMar9 жыл бұрын
Rumble 365 Do you know by any chance that if he 21:54 died natural or executed? Many on the top level are getting killed since Kim Jong Un took over.
@uspoliticaleconomy97959 жыл бұрын
***** That's true but in his case, he likely died from natural causes. Kim Jong-Il actually praised him after he passed, so the chance of him being executed is remote. In that short exchange with Lorin Maazel, he came off as very witty and KJI probably liked him. But you never really know in NK. When NK want to purge somone but don't want to announce it, they just say he died from an automobile accident. A passenger car passes by every 15-30 minutes after rush hours in Pyongyang. There is virtually zero chance of a head-on collision in NK.
@TheMoonandMar9 жыл бұрын
Rumble 365 Oh if he died during last part of KJI era, probably illness or something else. I thought he died during KJU era, the young confused man. Yes, it's joke when they say car accident death.
@uspoliticaleconomy97959 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, he died in 2011, 9 months before KJI. I can tell that the the cultural minister (Song Seok-Hwan) is very good with flattery. Plus KJI was into movies, plays, and music, etc. So he was probably allowed to die from natural causes. It would have been a whole new ballgame under KJU and his minions.

What an absolutely beautiful documentary of an amazing trip, an exchange of cultures, emotions and hearts, through music. I'm sure the members that had reservations on going, came away appreciating the experience the most.

This is unlike anything I've never seen before. I got chills hearing the orchestra play both anthems. It saddens me that North Korea doesn't get the necessary attention they deserve. It's the only country in isolation & seeing bus loads of Americans there will truly go down in history. I hope in the near future we can all unite & promote peace, not war!

For all the horrors of NK, the country does have some excellent English translators. The woman in white at 13:26 is very good and caught everything uttered by Lorin Maazel, which isn't that easy to do. Her boss is also excellent. They're better than most South Korean translators, who're prone to over or undertranslating.

Relations hip has to start somewhere, through music it is possible. One can argue, that there were only privileged people in the concert hall, but at the end of the concert true emotions could be seen. Only through the leadership things can be changed, no matter what kind of government... The process is slow, but much better than using force. I wish the Koreans well, all of them, and all the peoples of the world. If there is a "god", it can only be one, for all...

Alejandro Cao Be Benos is not a "special delegate" of North Korea. Why both interviewing him? He gave himself that title. His title is just some privileged Spaniard guy that supports the DPRK regime. That "Committee for Cultural Relations with foreigners" does not represent any countries. It's just the name of a company that he owns and registered in Spain. He recently was arrested for arms trafficking for the DPRK in Spain. He's shady. Why bother interviewing him?

Beautiful but sad because of the events continuing to unfold and the lives outside of Pyongyang. Music and dance are wonderful ways of connecting; the experience can lead to so much optimism and I can only hope the positive feelings continue to build- and that there's cause to feel positive in our interactions.
@MichaelOZimmermannJCDECS5 жыл бұрын
Yes, and the whole event could be watched on "all" those TV-sets in the DPRK... without electricity... Sadly this was only for the privileged few, who do not communicate with those in the country-side, trying to survive...

At 22:40 did he just blurt out "my North Korean daughter" followed up by "ciao bella", then forcing cheek-kissing with that poor girl? He must have thought himself such a bad ass, using that ol' American charm to win 'em over Never cringed so hard.

At the beginning I was against this. My thoughts: ‘Purely for a ruthless dictator to show his power! Just for the elite. (Which was true).’ But was in tears by the end. Playing the anthem and folk song (which is a beautiful piece of music) really joined hearts (including mine)! It is sad that the political situation has become so much worse since Kim Jong Il has passed away. The people are suffering so! It is said that 80% of the population is starving in the true sense of the world! 80%‼️‼️ They have the most nuclear weapons of any country with the possible expectation of China. They have the second largest military force next to the USA!! And probably the most hard core brainwashed people in the world (IMO)! What happened to cause this? They actually teach children in school to call Americans ‘Yankee B*stards’. During the music lessons (part 1) when the girl who played the violin was about to play, she looked scared to death. She never cracked a smile or seemed to acknowledge him. I was surprised to see a girl especially after hearing the explanation of the fact that the Pyangyoung Orchestra is comprised of all men except for 2female harpists.
