In British culture gnomes originated as something called Brownies, which were little hairy humanoids which would help out with domestic chores as long as you treated them fairly and paid them with a bowl of porridge or cream. They leave if you pay them with money or offer them new clothes. Gnomes in British culture are an extension to this idea, where they protect the plants in your garden

The difference between Karl having a view on trans people vs not wanting to do stuff is because usually the things are happening to him. He's a good person at heart so he'll always try and have a honest, genuine view on something and genuinely doesn't seem to care about pre-conceptions, political sides, any of that nonsense. He seems like 'well if you like it, good for you'. Unless it affects him, like loads of noise, or an activity that means he has to do something. Then he'll have a problem, but social view wise he's a pure soul

I think this episode is really interesting. I watched it the first time some 5 years before coming out as trans myself. I like that Karl, even though he doesnt understand these issues, isn't mean spirited, and he still hangs out with these women and finds things to talk about, and just treats them like any other people. I think its really indicative of how a lot of non trans people feel - confused, perhaps, but not hateful in any way. The truly hateful people are very much in the minority, even though theyre very loud. Most average people dont a give a damn about trans issues but at the same time theyre not hateful, and treat trans people, well, just as normal people.

In the UK at least its becoming much more common to not get married. It’s not as taboo as it used to be. We no longer have laws that discriminate against illegitimate children born out of wedlock. And half of all marriages end in divorce so why rush into it. Divorce rates are now dropping due to there being less social pressure to get married.
@andrewq159

Half of births in the UK are outside marriage, with similar percentages in many other Western countries. The divorce rate is still high. The number of divorces has fallen in the 21st c because the number of married people has reduced.

I think a lot of people don’t see the point in marriage anymore. If you’ve been with someone for 17 years and it’s going great, why get married now? It’s not going to change anything, Marriage doesn’t prevent cheating and I don’t think it’s been represented particularly well by previous generations with the number of divorces and unhappy marriages.

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) leads all other sharks in attacks on people and boats, as well as fatalities. Currently, the great white shark has been connected with a total of 354 total unprovoked shark attacks, including 57 fatalities. Rodney Fox, the man who took Karl to see the sharks was bitten by a great white when he was diving to catch fish, he's not a scientist although now he campaigns for the preservation of sharks.

Garden Gnomes were first produced in 19th century Germany by sculptor Philip Griebel. Made of clay (and eventually resin and plastic by the 1970s and 80s), these gnomes were called Gartenzwerge or garden dwarfs. However, the earliest gnome statuary descendants were used in ancient Rome. These were statues of the Roman gods and the most common one was Priapus, a god of fertility derived from Greek mythology. The gnome statue, and other statues like it, were used in gardens to ensure a bountiful harvest by protecting the animals and plants. They also were said to keep evil spirits away. It was also a sign of wealth. ❤

@@RobertTaylor-gz2fu you put way too much faith in Karl’s sense of time. He mentions a couple times in XFM how long he’s been going out with her and it works out more like 94-95 then. I'd do the shark thing out the cage, with a professional. I really want to go scuba diving in Cuba and they have lots of sharks. Snakes don't bother me, but I have a perfectly rational and justified fear of spiders, which is why I'm not going to Australia until they eradicate them. Spidercide. The thing with sharks is they tend to hunt at night (not exclusively, especially when they're hungry, but -), that's the really dangerous time to swim with them.

shark thing, i think its more about not relating food and humans as if sharks relate us to getting fed we prob have more closer encounters on beaches and that not good for us or the sharks

Steve also now has a girlfriend that he hasn't married.. although we don't actually have it confirmed yet if she's let him have a go on her or not Queen Boomer should do the King's make up and wig while he's clean-shaven and she has the chance!

It's not a causal effect. The children of people who can afford to go swimming with dolphins tend to be of a upper socio-economic class and their kids are more privaledged and have access to more educational resources.

The Dolphins and pregnant women thing might be because of the Dolphins sonic clicks, might be bad for unborn babies...just my guess though.
