The first time I visited them, there was a KFC about a hundred yards opposite the Spinx. People don't realise that they are surrounded on virtually three sides by housing and shops with just the open desert on the other side!

@@hamilton9479 It's still there as far as I know. But it's a bad idea to use the sphinx entrance. The main entrance is right by the police station, so the pickpockets avoid it. You still often get random guys asking for your ticket once you go through the scanners though, pretending to be guides. They're just locals who climbed over the wall in the morning or walked in from the other side. If you walk down the alley on the right side of the sphinx entrance, you can just hop over the wall with the locals. They find it hilarious when foreigners do shit like that.

The one thing they don’t show in this re the museum. It’s an amazing museum but heaven help you if you need the toilet 😂😂 Get ready for a guy at the door selling you individual pieces of toilet paper. Never in my life have I had to estimate how many pieces I will need so I could agree a price. Honestly Egypt has such beautiful history to learn about, it’s just a shame you have to deal with Egyptians. Not even gonna go in to the poisons in the paint of the little statues they’ll try to sell you. If you don’t believe me and you’re going, then just look for yourself how many people are selling things but they hold them through plastic to avoid skin contact. Dangerous place to go if you don’t do your research

I remember when we were pestered like this in Turkey, literally every shop we walked past they are trying to drag you in. We got so pissed off we just said no, the moment any of them tried to talk to us. Us British can be petty about this sort of thing, if a store owner won't take no for an answer we will literally walk into the next shop along to the owner who wasnt bothering us, then, buy something we don't want and then throw it in the rubbish bin in full view of the guy next door trying to get us to go in his store just to spite him. Then say to him "see that I bought from this guy just because he left us alone and I didn't even need these flip flops."

I went to Turkey 25 years ago with my girlfriend at the time, put me off ever going to back or going to Egypt too. Creepy ass waiters trying to massage my girlfriends shoulders, touching, I stood up in a restaurant and told one guy if he touched my girlfriend again I'd fucking bury him. We were told to leave so we did, funny thing is so did several other tables. Then there is the constant pestering as you mentioned.

Egypt is a pretty dangerous place for "western" tourists, it's a manageable risk but when I went we were in a bus convoy with a huge amount of military security - there's been a lot of pretty major mass killings of tourists over the years - that was before the Arab Spring too, it's almost certainly got worse in terms of potential risk since.
