My all time favourite episode, having spent a few years living in the Irish republic at the beginning of this century I can say without a doubt that the Irish have an incredible sense of humour, a single off hand remark to a fellow worker would have me roaring with laughter, one of my favourites was (said about another worker) "He's a lazy bollox that one, if there was work in the bed he'd sleep on the floor"

The two writers of Father Ted saw Jim Norton in a small bit-part in an episode of Frasier, playing a snooty butler at a wine club that Frasier and Niles are vying with each other to get into. From that tiny role they knew he'd be perfect to play Bishop Brennan.

That intro, specifically the drum beats, are a parody of the British Soap "Eastenders" which always ends each episode on drum beats of "Dum dum dum dum dum, duddah dum" - then the theme tune, after a big revelation or cliff hanger moment.

Die laughing? Somebody already did that watching a British sitcom. One of the show The Goodies biggest claims to fame was the episode Kung Fu Kapers which was a secret Lancastrian martial art using black puddings as a weapon. In the scene where Bill Oddie is fighting Tim Brooke Taylor (dressed as a bagpiper in kilt) a TV viewer at home literally died laughing. It is not apocryphal, it actually happened and is documented. The Goodies Kung Fu Kapers video is on KZfaq.

@@Whippy99 I remember reading about this in the Book of Lists 45 years ago. The reason it became public IIRC was the wife of the man who died wrote to the Goodies and thanked them for making her husbands last moments so happy. In their Goodies article, Wikipedia has the story under the heading Viewer Incidents. The part that triggered the death was the last part of the scene when the Scotsman came in. Let us know if you survived :)

One of the writers of Father Ted (Graham Linehan) is also a co-writer of 'Black Books' along with Irish stand-up comedian Dylan Moran (who plays Bernard Black). Bill Bailey and Tamsin Grieg also star. It's humour is similar to Father Ted.

The Catholic guilt is BRILLIANTLY woven into and throughout this show. The Irish unable to shake their mentality of their gaelic pagan heritage and having to "correct" themselves! Bishop Brennan even shows this when he initially doesn't want to say a prayer but then remembers he's a bishop! And Ted saying "most forgiving of ALL gods and and having to pivot! It's so PERFECTLY done! and so accurate too! It's gold! And especially at the end when Bishop Brennan Ego is insult is literally stops giving a fuck pushing the pope over, and taking the gods name in vain in front of the pope and all the cardinals LMAO it's pure gold! In the UK and Ireland, we do indeed use the word "arse" and yes we say it with the R not like the states with the word ass

In Ireland we use the arse word for the rear end. We use the ass word for a donkey.

I first saw this episode when I was 9yrs old, I had just dropped out of school, I was falling asleep next to my mum, then all of a sudden I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

Great episode! (Though you talked through a couple of lines of dialog and so missed later jokes, like the 'Audience With Elton John' line from Dougal early on, which was one of the strongest in the episode. And didn't skip back to hear it)

Jeffery archer comes from my home town, same as John cleese, and he got jailed for being an idiot. I think he used to be a politician but ended up an author. I think tax evasion might be what he got locked up for but my memory is unbelievably terrible.

I saw this specific episode well over 10 years ago, and I still laugh uncontrollably. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen (also the South Park with the ass-faces…that one absolutely kills me). It’s not particularly brilliant or anything, but it is HYSTERICAL!
