To give some context Jack Merit represented Dave’s brother in his court case and worked his entire career to try and level the unfair socio-economic play field in the UK. Jack was killed in the London Bridge terror attack in 2017 sadly south that was a tribute to him. In terms of the Grenfell bar 72 people died in a block fire which has also led to families today still being homeless. Finally Boris Johnson (our Prime Minister) has advanced his entire political career through anti-immigration rhetoric (this was mostly the case with Brexit). I could go on forever about how awful Johnson and the conservatives are but I thought I’d give just a brief amount of context.

The reparation Dave asked about at the end is when The People of the Caribbean & West Indies came into the UK in June 1948 on the boat called Empire Windrush,why they’re known as the Windrush Generation.They helped build modern day Britain,cause they were part of the British Colony,they got given all the legalities to live and work in Britain but cause of skin colour most were still mistreated etc and in 2018 most were sent back to their home countries and there’s 80+ cases of wrongful deportation in this matter,Dave was addressing all this and what they’re owed.

Also the UK had a lot of black slaves just the same as the US did, we just didn't have them here they were in the colonies and as a nation we finished paying reparations to slave owners like 10 years ago for ending slavery which is fucking nuts so owing reparations to the descendants of the colonies is a fair claim from him anyway

@@BradAndLex The reperations in the UK is different than the US in the fact that to end slavery they paid slaveowners' losses out of tax paid by any British taxpayer from the 1800s until 2015. If you can pay slaveowners reperations for their losses in the slave trade then you should pay slaves what they're owed. Doesn't even have to be because they paid slaveowners instead of slaves it's that is really the very least they could do. I'm not saying pay reperations to individuals (unless they're slave descendents) but give them to Africa and the countries they took slaves from.

Jack Merit was a middle class guy who fought for prison reform, he helped Daves brother and was friends with the family. He died in an isis attack on London Bridge, his parents were in the audience and didn't know he was doing a tribute. The Windrush generation was a wave of immigrants from the carribean bought here to rebuild after the war in the 50s, built a life here and were then mass deported a few years ago... Grenfell was a high rise flat building mainly occupied by ethnic minorities in london, it was covered in cheap faulty cladding which caught fire and killed hundreds, and made hundreds more homeless.. He talks about the difference between the treatment of Kate Middleton and Megan Markle by the press and Royal family, our prime minister who has said openly racist things and is basically the store brand version of trump. The brits is a big deal here with a massive audience so this performance was even more powerful... it would be like someone calling Trump racist at the grammys. Dave is amazing 👌
@BradAndLex

Sheesh, thanks for filling us in. I wish I would have read this before recording the Grenfell video. I was wondering what caused the building to burn so badly. So it sounds like faulty cladding and no sprinklers smh

The man opposite Dave is a famous producer who co produced Dave’s album. Dave also produces some of his songs so another talent he has. Near the end there was a line “Grenfell victims still need accommodation” and the audience cheered. Grenfell tower was a apartment block in London that housed many economically disadvantaged people, many being of ethnic minorities. It burned down 2/3 years ago and many died and many those who survived have still not being giving a permanent living circumstance by the Government (at the time Theresa May was the PM).
@BradAndLex
@BradAndLex 3 жыл бұрын
Whatttt!? That is so crazy. I remember hearing about that briefly in our news, but I didn't know people died or that they still haven't permanently relocated the folks who lived there. Did they ever find out the cause of the fire?

@@BradAndLex there was a faulty refrigerator, shouldn’t have been as dangerous as it was but the building was made by a company that used materials that weren’t legislated because it was cheaper, which amplified the problem 100x. The government took a lot of the blame (as they should) as there was no legislation prior regarding building safety and some still haven’t been homed permanently which is awful. Total death toll was 72 in the end.

I'm not gonna repeat the hateful things Boris has said and written about black people, gay people, single mums, Muslims (like some of its soooo 'old school' it'd be laughable if it wasn't for real) but trust he's 'a real racist'. He says 'be grateful we're the least racist' coz often POC in the UK are told they're lucky its not as bad here as the US or South Africa etc., As you said white people need to watch this coz Dave is talking beautifully and positively to the Black community and calling out and calling on the White community (I'm white BTW) at the same time. So please share with friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, black, white, latinx, first nation, asian. 'You'll struggle but your struggle ain't a struggle like me, how could it be, when your people gave us the odds that we beat', is I think one of the most poetic explanations of structural racism ever, and a great quote for doughnuts (donuts?) who try the 'they're playing the race card', 'I'm poor too', 'Its just a class issue' BS rather than face up to the reality of white privilege. Sometimes it makes folk think but 'if you don't wanna get it, then you're never gonna get it', right.

Great reaction guys,this track performance always gets me in tears💜 Jack Merritt was an amazing young man who spent his helping prisoners, including Dave's older brother, who's serving a life sentence for a murder he didn't commit,under a law made to target young black men. Jack gave his life trying to prevent the London bridge terrorist attack,he's worth some research. Megan was constantly blasted by our predominantly right wing press,often for the exact things Kate was praised for, total double standards,purely down to her race,even said some racist sh*t about her mum being "ghetto" or something.😡 And boris' racism is widely publicised,far from a one off and worth a quick Google. "Picaninies with watermelon smiles" was one of his remarks about black people. And these aren't slips of the tongue at a press conference or something, it's usually (incl that quote)an article he's sat and written for a newspaper 🤷‍♂️😡total POS running our country, at least you got rid of yours though eh!

I really liked this reaction - I always thought that it was best to hear the live version first.. but watching this.. I feel like you were able to fully immerse in the production and the emotion. Nice. Don't worry about not picking up on all bars - you clearly got the gist. and over time you'll end up picking up slang and references in UK rap. Two things: You played down the reparation bit.. here in UK we had a period of immigrants from the carribean : aka'windrush generation' - he refers to it in the last bars : We're fighting real hard to make sure that those that may get deported or weren't compensated - get justice - its a far better cry than the families from plantations not getting justice in US. Also.. racism UK Vs US.. it is better over here. NOT good enough and there is still systemic and cultural BS happening but I have family and friends that moved here from US and are NEVER going back! Apparently it is a palpable difference better here and also you get more opportunities, as a black person ( blows my mind.. seeing as I have witnessed racism here. But I guess its all relative?!) I've subscribed.. you guys were lovely and looking forward to watching more videos :)

The first black person in a school in the UK doesn't really have it rough - relatively speaking, that is - I don't think. It's when you get to a couple of dozen black school in a primarily white school that the troubles start to kick in, all this talk of "changing communities" and all that. I went to a school where there were 3 black students and two Asian students in a school of 1500 and there wasn't any overt racism. I don't really remember them being treated as a novelty, either, that was reserved for the townies and the yank. When I went to college to prepare myself for uni though, there were enough people of various cultures there to form cultural cliques and when that happens there's almost like a voluntary segregation and a raising of tensions. Granted that college was in what is probably one of the more racist towns in our country, and I can only speak of my own observations rather than lived experiences. Conveniently, if you're interested in learning more about racism in Britain Akala's written a fantastic book about it called Natives that is most definitely worth the read.
