I am Filipino but I find the lady narrator's accent to be rather unusual. I don't think it is a common 'Filipino accent'. Am I the only one who has observed this? I am curious as to where the accent is coming from. Maybe it is just her idiosyncratic way of speaking. Love the content of the video though. It would have been nice if they were actual video footages rather than still photos so that we could see the movement. I think the still photos also maybe make the masks look scary to Westerners or to those not familiar with the festivals. You really have to see the motion and hear the chanting and the music to appreciate the festival dancing. The sounds will resonate through your body when you are near them. Thank you for featuring and reacting to this!

I'm living in Bacolod City(ever since) where the Masskara Festival takes place. Once you know the history of why this festival exists, you would actually appreciate everything about it especially the masks. I never see the mask as creepy or weird but instead, I just see a very colorful parade of people dancing so energetically to local music (with props also) and it's so much fun being in there personally. We also celebrate the electric Masskara Parade at night where the costumes and props are set/designed with colorful lights. I also agree with some comments, I think seeing these festivals in motion/video would be more fun rather than just looking at the pictures. :)

I think you will feel different towards the masks when you see them dancing graciously and beautifully. You won't be bothered by it anymore and you'll focus more on their dances. Almost all of the festivals in the PH have dance performances. Every year all of the festivals of each cities are invited to compete in the Aliwan Festival, a dance competition of all the festivals.

Negritos/Aetas in Panay "..when they were converted to Christianity". The original version was the golden salakot, the barter of Panay between the native Aetas and the arrival of the ten muslim bornean datus in the 12th century. The story turned out to be a hoaxed hence they switched the story into someyhing in the line of a Chrustian conversion of the Panay Aetas.

4:54 What? No way! No one ever told me since childhood that dancing is bad. Maybe American Mormons are different from Filipino Mormons, but there's no way that is true. Our church literally encourages us to attend Christmas parties. And when we reach our teenage years, they have this event (I forget what it's called) where they want us teens to mingle & dance with the opposite sex (which I personally am not into).

In the 17th century, a Spanish General brought hundreds of soldiers from Peru and Mexico to the Philippines. They were the Aztec, Mayan, and Peruvian warriors who fought alongside the Spaniards and local Filipinos against the Moros and Chinese Rebels. It was said that they never returned home after the battle was won. Perhaps, that is why there is “Native American” influence in some of the costumes you saw on the video. I could be wrong about the tribal influences.

02:40 the MassKara Festival was born because of the tough times the province is going thru...it was in the 80's when the prices of Sugar nose dived to almost rockbottom...dubbed as the Sugar bowl of the Philippines..Negros Occidental...produces 56% of the total sugar output of the Philippines with its dozen Sugarmills scattered all over the province...relying only on the Sugar Industry..it really suffered from the price decline...already in the trying times...a sea mishap had added to the misery of the negrenses..when a ship bound for its capital Bacolod from Manila sunk...it came in the very unfortunate time. So the government officials came up with an idea of atleast bringing cheers to the people despite all the worst they've been to...PUTTING A SMILE OVER THE SAD FACES BEHIND THOSE MASKS...just to lift the spirit of the people....
