Hi Guys, best reaction so far! informative and funny!. The (heated) sticky toffee pudding would have been sooo much better with custard or ice cream, the dry biscuits and cakes are usually eaten with a cup of tea to counter the dryness, coffee works just as well, please try it.

Battenburg = light lemon sponge, light rasperry sponge, apricot jam/jelly wrapped in marzipan. You should see how they make them, they are made in one continuous line that if you left it without cutting into smaller individual cakes, would be about a mile long.

Definitely do a proper sticky toffee pudding someday too, probably our best dessert when it’s done right! 👍

So I used to work for Premier Foods who own Mr Kipling. The mini battenburg machine is a thing of wonder. It bakes 4 continuous strips of tiny cake about as thick as your thumb, slices off the crust and then, using an jngenious arrangement of tiny conveyor belts arranges them into the checker and sticks them together using a sugar solution. The marzipan is made from coconut because almond marzipan found on full size battenburgs isnt soft enough to coat the battenburg. When the mini battenburg was launched about 30 years ago, the engineer who designed the machine won a food innovation industry award.

Need to have a cup of tea while trying them, they go hand in hand.

glad you seemed to enjoy them a fair bit. some of the selections are basically 'old biddy cakes' made specifically for grannie tastebuds to go with tea and have been around for almost a century so yes, they would seem a bit strange tasting for most younger peeps. i was a bit surprised you didn't like the battenberg but I've noticed marzipan to be quite divisive for Americans. One i do completely disagree with is the viennese whirls though, absolutely love them dipped in a coffee or tea. when I worked at the supermarket twenty years back we were sometimes told to help ourselves to a few items when the dinner lady was off sick, and i always used to go for either the whirls or syrup/jamaica cake. .

I love Marzipan. In the 70's I wagged school and rode the train into Perth and nicked a bar (Like a block of butter) of Marzipan from a kiosk. and quoffed the whole damned thing. Send those Battenbergs this way !!

Mr Kipling is the baseline here in the same way that Cadbury's chocolate is. Neither are the best not the worst, but they're you'd compare anything else to. "Ooh, this is so much better/worse than Kipling/Cadbury."

French fancies are my favourite, I also like the orange and plain white ones they do at Halloween and Christmas. I think they sometimes do strawberry ones for valentines Day too.
