I live in Cornwall and went for a cream tea as recently as yesterday. you can watch them make the clotted cream in the kitchen, the jam comes from a local farm made from strawberries grown there and a hint of scotch whisky mixed in. yum.

For what it's worth, sultanas are a type of raisin - they're raisins made with one specific variety of grape called the sultana grape, which originally comes from Turkey, which used to be a Sultanate, hence the name.

In a perfect world the scones should be fresh out of the oven so they're nice and warm. Butter next then the clotted cream followed by the strawberry/raspberry jam. Only do it that way as it's easier to spread the cream on the scone then top it with a dollop of jam rather than trying to spread the cream on top of the jam. Very messy that way. Never thought it altered the taste whichever way you do it. That's a new one on me!

I'm from Devon - and it's definitely cream first (loads of it) and then jam. How I look on it is, when you have a piece of toast, you don't spread jam and then butter on top. So why do it with a scone. 🥰

I love this, I live in Devon and I will eat my scones any way I choose. The problem I see here is - not enough cream for an authentic cream tea - seriously take a look at pictures of cream teas, big dollops of cream, almost ice cream scoops worth, that’s how we do it. I visit the US often and the first day of my holiday with my American friends we always have a big cream tea with that exact brand of clotted cream and scones that I make - BTW I usually have to use a glass as a cutter, works fine.

They do have jelly in the UK that is similar to US jelly (and they call it jelly and not jam), but it's usually used as a meat sauce like mint jelly or damson jelly. The stuff to have with peanut butter is almost always called jam.

I’m from Yorkshire North of England. Would you believe that I’m in my late 60s, but have never had a cream tea? But you are selling it to me. Incidentally let me explain the tea thing. Back in the late 18th century Lunch was served at 12 noon. Dinner was around 8:00 pm. So a long time to wait. Consequently it became popular to have a cold snack served with tea in the late afternoon around 4 to 5pm. In some parts of England meal times evolved into Breakfast, then 12 noon Dinner (the main meal of the day) - 5pm a meal called tea, this was generally cold such as a sandwich and cake. Then finally a light hot meal called supper before going to bed. Like the three ladies by the way, they are hot!

I'm a Londoner now living in West Yorks and am in my 7th decade and can wholeheartedly agree that that was true when I was a Dustbin Lid (kid) but now breakfast is when I get up, luncheon around 13:00 and dinner between 18:00 and 20:00. Nothing after that because sleeping would be interrupted.

Heres a thing: Raisins are dried red grapes, Sultanas are dried seedless white grapes, they originate from the middle east and were called sultanas because just like the sultans wife (the sultana) they have no seed inside them (except for the sultans).

Cottage or, as from your other video you like lamb, shepherds pie. Liver and bacon with onion gravy. Scotch eggs. Toad in the hole. Fry up/full english. Chicken tikka massala (yes, it's british). Pasty. Pork pie. Steak in ale pie/stew (use a dark ale, preferably a porter or stout, and a measure of port). Champ. Bubble and squeak. Home made pickled eggs and onions (add chillis for a proper kick). Sticky toffee pudding. Gypsy tart (served with a wedge of apple). Rice pudding. Rhubarb and custard. All classic british comfort foods. Mix and match (liver and bacon with champ e.g.). Try condiments like english mustard, branston pickle, piccallilee, brown sauce.

Try your random Americans on a roast beef dinner, English style, complete with Yorkshire Pudding. Yorkshire Pudding isn't a dessert, it's a batter accompaniment to the roast beef. It can be made as individuals in a cake tin or in a pan and cut into pieces. My grandmother used to put the beef on a rack and let the juices drip onto the pudding while cooking but I suspect that might be for advanced students. :-) You might find pre-made Yorkshire Puddings in the international store you visited. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_roast

As a Devonian, I always do cream first, then jam -- you can push a divot into the cream to hold the jam. I prefer Langage Farm clotted cream over Rodda's, as it's thicker. There's also a variation worth trying called "Thunder and Lightning": clotted cream with a drizzle of golden syrup on top.

Warm, home made, scones with butter and jam served with English Breakfast tea is lovely. Whipped Double cream (I think you call it heavy cream) is delicious too and marginally healthier than clotted cream. The better jams usually have a higher percentage of fruit to sugar. Much more cream required IMO.

Personally, I don't care which way they are- both are delicious. It was fun to watch newbies try them, and the only thing anyone did wrong was be mean with portions. There is no spreading of cream or jam: If your dollop doesn't reach the sides with a gentle press of the spoon in the middle, your dollop isn't big enough :) NOBODY has cream tea (particularly with clotted cream) with any thought to calorie intake.

Really love your videos on food, and your whole delightfully laconic and charming family. I'm English but not from Devon or Cornwall, and I've had quite a few cream teas on holiday; it's one of my favourite treats. We don't have them at home, although we do have scones sometimes, with butter and probaby jam or honey. Yes, the scone recipe is very easy but you have done well to get them to rise so well - they looked great and I bet they were good and light. Did you know you can make a savoury cheese scone? Add a little pinch of cayenne, grated strong cheese and skip the sugar. Delicious hot. I'm also a tea-lover and certainly agree that some kind of drink to wash a cream tea down is essential. The very posh way to serve your assemblage would be to pre-slice the scones with a sharp knife, and decant the jam and cream into china or glass dishes - no labels at the table. I'm not posh myself; I just thought you'd be interested, if you wanted to do the full Downton! You do need knives to help spread the jam and the cream, but 'refined' people spoon out from the dish first, so I hear (also for marmalade on breakfast toast), then spread it with a knife. If you are in a cafe or hotel, they often give you little individual pots of cream and miniature jam jars, which means you can avoid all that sharing around and get to scoffing faster lol. As for the order of toppings, as I am neutral Essex, I can break the dichotomy and declare that for me it depends on the type of cream you are served. If it's the very thick clotted cream, I'd spread that on first like butter and top it with the jam, whereas if you are faced with slightly looser double cream I would put jam on first as a stable base and blob the cream over that. You may come across a full meal called a cream tea, including cucumber sandwiches (another minefield of traditional recipes) or other savoury items to start, and extra cakes such as fruit cake along with the scones. Oh, and sultanas are dried white grapes, I think, instead of black grapes that become raisins. Of course, you also have the type of 'cream tea' that you pay an arm and a leg for at Wimbledon, with fresh strawberries in season, topped with cream. But that's something else, really. Hey, low-carb!

Thinking of full English tea, with finger sandwiches, pastries, crumpets, tea cakes, brandy snaps filled with cream. Accompanied by a lovely big pot of coffee ☕

I'm with the kids, cream on the bottom. And I rate it about a 3. Although I from England, I've never really got the the cream tea thing, but I can imagine it being a great treat in harder times, which is much of our history. Lovely kids and family. I think they all have to visit Britain/England.

I'd like to see this video again, but made drinking British style tea with the scones. A teapot and proper China cups is a must. Brilliant video nevertheless.

Random comment here! I spied a 'Coffee crisp' among in the range of confectionary in that store. That is not sold in the UK, it is, however, available in Canada. Wonder if the Cadbury products are from there too?

Hi both may I start by saying that you look like a young Jennifer Aniston and marlan brando in this vid, kudos to you. I'm in the UK and travel a lot so I like to see what others think when they travel. Loved all your vids on UK and your delivery is natural and funny. Would love to see you do some wine reviews or an across the pond comparison where you and your friend in the UK find and review equivalents. Anyway thanks for making me smile, I'm off now for a scone and cuppa. PS if you want a good uk recipe site try nigella Lawson, and if you love lamb you have to try Tagine. Have a good one.

I know that some Americans that love British food go to Jungle Jim's, but I have looked them up and they only have a few stores, which are nowhere near my American g/f in Missouri. Do they do online deliveries? I eat it the Cornish way when in Cornwall, and the Devonshire way when in Devon, though of course we can get the scones and Cornish clotted cream in all stores all over England. Thanks!!

Try Yorkshire putting either sweet with golden syrup or with roast dinner and gravy. Sweet or savory basically.
