Also, it would take 42 years regardless of how long they lived, again, the 42 years number is based on how long it would take light to travel there and back. So yeah, it would take much longer than it takes to fix a pothole, that 42 years thing is just how long it takes the weapon to have any effect and how long it would take for the Smorps to notice.
