There are a couple of spots when the (non-black) lights are on but you can sort-of tell that they've got _something_ on their faces, based on the way the light interacts with it. It's most noticeable on J-None, in particular, perhaps because of his darker skin tone, or maybe just because of the way the light is hitting him. And yes, pigments that don't do anything with visible light but glow brightly in vivid colors under ultraviolet light have been around at least since the mid twentieth century if not longer. Chalk artists used to use special "blacklight chalk" to hide an image in their drawing, that wouldn't be visible until they flipped a switch and turned on the UV. That was a fading art form by the mid eighties and almost extinct by the mid nineties. The blacklight chalk always showed up _some color_ (usually white) even under normal light, because the chalk itself is opaque to visible light, and so the artist had to use it in a part of the image where its visible-light color matched. (Although it was possible to make chalk that was e.g. yellow or pale blue or pink under normal light, and some completely different color under blacklight. The blacklight pigments glow brightly enough to overwhelm the other color.) But for make-up you can use something that's basically invisible under normal light, like cold cream for instance, and mix the black-light pigments into it, et voila. Paint, like chalk, is inherently opaque. But it would be possible to mix blacklight pigments into a stain or varnish, treat wood with it, and get something that just looks like normal wood under visible light but glows brightly under UV.

Layne is the beat boxer. He's an absolute beast. Some of the sounds he makes are mind boggling. As for Geoff- he is captivating to watch. How he can pulse the notes where you see his mouth moving, but don't always hear the syllable. To me, it shows how much he's mastered blurring the line between (bass) singer and instrument. Re the blacklight - there's a scrolling shutter that opens/closes that's, like all their lighting, connected to the track.... occurring on the note/beat it's timed to.

So much fun to watch you try to figure out the makeup and lights. Thanx for doing that frame-by-frame investigation. If it was an edit, it's impossible. Now, I know for sure!! J None joined them shortly after in 2018 and left to join the Navy to sing with them in 2021. I am always here for Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci!

In the Behind the Scenes video you can see their faces being painted under black light and then watch the makeup seem to disappear under regular light. So, it is not editing. They had the makeup on the whole time.

This was just before J. None became a member. Re-watched the BTS video of What's This? and it is Black Light makeup on their faces.

@@AmericansLearn Almost all of the VoicePlay members since 1997 have worked/sung/acted for the theme parks. It has shaped the way they set up the videos, costuming, staging, do the arrangements, pre-mix for audio, camera work, common makeup they do themselves but ones like In The Hall Of The Mountain King with prosthetics and all, get the talent in for that.

VoicePlay has a few tricks up their 'sleeve' The best one is their location and history. They live and work in Orlando Fla, and many of them worked for Disney. They've got many, many friends in the Orlando area still working at Disney, and the most important in this case is Rick Underwood, their make-up Wizard. If invisible black light effects are needed, Call Rick.

Actually, this one was not Rick. The makeup was credited to Andy Wright from MakeUpACA.

I will add for you that the makeup artist, Rick Underwood, painted the guys' faces with a black light shining on them so he could see what he was doing. Then, yes, under regular lights, it looks like there's nothing there.
