​@@brendaanliker4254 I know this comment is two years old, but maybe this could help someone wondering the same thing right now....Hands down I think Ray Allen Manufacturing has the best quality "rope balls", I have a few for my shepherd, it's her favorite toy. I only bring it out during training.

Love this. I like Victoria. But her belief that prong collars and e-collars are “torture devices” is asinine. The idea that EVERY SINGLE DOG only needs positive reinforcement is baffling.

I agree, I still think Victoria has great training methods but they definitely won’t work for all dogs.

@@JM-jn4il same thing with kids, if you only use positive reinforcement, the kid will one day walk over you, they need there dads strong strict enforcement.

I think that behind the camera and out of the public eye Victoria would probably agree that properly used prongs and ecollars are great tools. What she hates is clueless owners using them as aversive quick fixes who don't put in the work to do proper training. But for TV and her "brand" it's been simplified to "just don't use them, choose positive instead!" But she herself uses negative reinforcement, corrections and even aversive methods of behavior modification, and she has talked on her show about having a ton of respect for people who train K9s and protection dogs, and those dogs are almost always trained on an ecollar/prong.

Those trainers aren't stupid, just immoral. What do they care how long it takes or if it even works. They are getting paid. It's a racket and a rip off. And people fall for it every single day. Sad.

well said, agree entirely. forgive me for being pedantic but I'd like to do so for those reading this comment in a similar position - the more appropriate phrasing is that dogs (and other organisms) communicate through *pressure* . even purely positive training is a form of pressure. existential feeding, shelter, leadership, praise, controlling toys or desirable objects, restricting freedom, so on and so forth. its all pressure. using higher and/or more precise exercises of pressure (i.e corrections) is as was highlighted in this comment - making it fairer on the dog when we ask them to act out completely unnatural behaviours to help them exist in a human society (functional obedience). I like to think of it as playing a game of hot and cold, and the person you are playing with never tells you when you are getting "cold". it would be *incredibly* frustrating. imagine living your entire life in such a manner. this is the level of non-sense that people think is "healthy" for dogs. not to say it can't work, but that you have to structure the dogs entire life so that it *never NEEDS* to be told it's getting cold. if you can do that, more power to you, but it's unrealistic for most, which is why purely positive training is essentially non-sense.

@@alxhiding I think it's also worth adding that structuring a dog's life so that they never need to be told no (or, in your analogy, "cold") in any circumstance usually implies that they are missing out on a lot of enriching experiences.

I tried the gentle leader, and ready Walker on my female gsd when she was nine months plus, also harnesses, and people; if you have a German shepherd, don't waste your money. I got nowhere fast with these. Get a prong collar and a great trainer, i.e. Tom Davis

GSD are awesome, but work. Ours is working line, and, boy, has she kept me working, lol! I've learned how to work her through nose work, agility, and tricks training, not to mention obedience. I've also learned how to ride a bike with a dog - not for the faint-of-heart. If it wasn't for Kong's frisbee and tug toy, all of the above would not have been enough. But she's soooo much fun :)

Hi, I have a 4 month old shepherd pup and sometimes I come home from the dog park and just cry… not because of my dog but because of the people!! Everyone has an opinion when they see a woman with a GSD puppy, everyone says their way is the best way, everyone thinks they’re a vet or trainer. It’s so hard. I am grateful for your comment. I feel heard.

@@Layna22783 Dang! That would be rough. That's such a cute fur-baby stage! I love Tom's methods; he's so knowledgeable about dog behavior. He did some ones specific to puppies - they will often follow you without any rewards, except the high pitched "happy" voice (that's in an area without distractions - in other words, NOT the park, lol!). If I were you, I would find a new dog park, or just a park. GSD, while needing socialization, don't really need other people/animals as much as say, a Golden Retriever. I loved his comment on one video for a client having problems taking their GSD around people. He said "You and your boyfriend are all he needs ..." for socialization. It gave me permission to feel good about my dog not welcoming strangers on our walk.

@@Layna22783a year late to the party 🎉, but- it’s the same with me. A woman (a petite woman) with a 60lb 7 month old puppy. She’s better behaved than 80% of the dogs she interacts with, but dang… the interactions with humans over just having her is ridiculous. All the commentary, especially because when I walk her we use the Herm Sprenger. Slowly weaning her off at the moment, but geez.. it’s insanity.

I'm glad I'm not the only ones who's noticed that trend....I use balanced methods and my dog literally never leashes out unless I REALLY push him beyond what I know he is comfortable, like I'm talking intentionally trying to get him upset. I watch those people still struggling after that many years and I look at my dog that I've not even had for two years and I just can't figure it out

That's why I do these FREE training tutorials! I think post people dont realize that this is such a very small piece the training and consulting I do the rest of the 8 hours in the day. I just wanna help people with their dogs!

I decided to join a r+ group on Facebook just for fun, and wow, these people are so uneducated when it comes to ecollars and prong collars it's sad, some lady said she got arrested for taking peoples prong and ecollars off at the local dog park, she was bragging about to saying she was doing these dogs a favor, like ma'am😳 the comments were praising her too, I have so many more wacky things from that group I can keep going and going

I had a trainer I paid a LOT of money to try to tell me that the reason my Bull Terrier wasn't learning impulse control is because I told her 'no'. Nothing to do with the fact that I had a 5 month old pup that needed to learn boundaries.

@@brittanyryan1997 - turn it up to 100 and I’d say it does. I guess I just have no problem with the term, or a need to soften the name. I use ecollar, stim, “shock”, collars, whatever you want to call them, every day with my dogs. My dogs are low level ecollar trained, however if one of my dogs was running onto a freeway chasing a deer, I’d “shock” the beans out of him if necessary to stop him.

@@tomdavisofficial good things come to those who wait 😁. Besides, I've gone back three years watching videos. Just doing that helps me with MY response to behavior I desperately need modified. My female GSD and I are working on barriers...doors mostly because she'll run out the door spin around and snag every dog waiting to come out. Soooo, we're back to square one for whatever reason. She's almost 8 she knows this stuff 🥴 So she waited really nice, didn't load when I put my hand on the door knob, everything's good, I'm on top of the world. Opened the door she bolted and snatched me out the door and to my knees I went 😡. On a good note through all that, rolling around with what I thought were busted knee caps, never lost control of my dog, still had a firm grip on that leash 😂🤣😂 This gal is my big money schutzhund world titled lineage five generations...she's an intense girl...8 years ago I was more intense too. This gal keeps me in my toes (and knees lol). We'll work on it again today. I need to lean into her obedience more, it's there, mamma just forgot to ask her to keep her butt in that sitz

What we do, after watching Tom's videos, is have our dog "place" when she does something we don't like - bark at the UPS truck for example. It's been a real stress reliever!
