This week on 10 Minute Amiga Retrocast ‪@10MARC‬ I have filmed the entire episode through a Progressive Peripherals ProGen Genlock. Here is what I used:
Amiga 500 with A570 CD-ROM with 2 MB RAM & SCSI interface.
Workbench 1.3, TV*TEXT Professional, DeluxePaint IV.
Canon Rf800 HD Video Camera.
Composite video output connected to Genlock, Genlock connected to Vidbox Composite capture card.
RCA Stereo output connected to Digitnow Stereo Capture on PC.
OBS for recording, Davinci Resolve for post processing and editing.
My goal is to use this Amiga 500 as a fairly period accurate Desktop Video machine for home/small business use.
Check out my videos mentioned in this episode.

Our local community broadcasting studio had an Amiga 500 with a genlock and Broadcast Titler and I got roped into teaching titling there even though I had never done it. They had been told I was an Amiga guru by someone my Mom knew so I said I would check it out. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to use Broadcast Titler so it wasn't really a big deal. Only on an Amiga!

How absolutely fantastic! Yes, sometimes as long as we know 10% more than the people around us, we are suddenly the Guru or expert!

I was a Beta-Tester for the A1300 Genlock(™), and used it on the PBS medical video "Headache - The ancient enemy" (1996) and the A1300 was Broadcast Quality (1" Ampex Video recorder) to make the Title, cycle-color graphics(dPaint), and 2D animation (Aegis Animator SW) through out the video. Later, I used it to watch Late-Night TV in the background while I was using Workbench on the Amiga in the foreground. Multi-Video-Tasking = Good Times!

I used a Digital Creations SuperGen back in the early 90s, and the quality always seemed really good (for composite - I didn't have any s-video gear at the time). I used a few character generator programs, as well as Scala, but mostly stuck to TurboTitle.

I have a GVP Genlock that I used for holiday videos. It was good, but constantly crashed my Amigas. I guess it was faulty, though the person I bought it off said it worked perfectly for him.

Was it for the RGB port or one of their ZORRO II devices? GVP always made really good products. Maybe the software could not handle more modern OS's
@necronom

@@10MARC It plugs into the RGB port (and the joystick port). I used it on my A500 KS1.2 and my A1200 KS3.0, and I had the same problem on both. GVP were ex-Commodore people I think, so they knew the system well.

If you go in deeper into those titeling programs, you should take Scala into account. When I was doing hobby video projects in the Youth Red Cross, i was always missing a genlock. I had my A500 there anyway :-) We had a source mixer, so every Amiga screen had to be mixed ~30 % with the video, it was always opaque

This is hard to watch, only from the perspective that, like many, I had an A500 back in the day, and it was extremely cutting edge then, but anything Amiga now is very dated and takes away from the memories I have. It sucks that we can't get a new Amiga in 2024. Every other day, some new ultra powerfdul handheld comes out. Here we are living on 40 year old hardware with 320 x 200 x 16 color games.
@10MARC
@10MARC Ай бұрын
That's certainly your perspective and I respect that, but a lot of us have a really fun time pushing these old machines to their limits and having a blast with them. There are still Amiga's coming out - just not how you might expect. A-Eon just released a new motherboard, and AmigaKit is about to ship an ARM based Amiga called the A-600. Lots of fun still to be had. And those games were 320x200x32 colors. ;)

My Amiga 500 is *two years older than me* and I still consider it to be great, *despite* its limitations in 2024. When I tried inserting a silly little stick figure (done within 15 minutes in DPaint 4) into footage I had recorded years earlier, using the chroma key function in iMovie - *and it worked* as I hoped it would, I was amazed. That means I can do animation sequences (cartoons, basically) with hand-drawn line art and digital colour and make them dance across the screen on top of real-life video. All things considered, that's awesome (even without a genlock that could handle a bright Barbie pink as colour zero).
@fsphil
@fsphil Ай бұрын
Is the colour fringing effect on the mouse pointer and other bits just in the capture, or is it present in the composite output? It seems noisier than it should be.
@10MARC
@10MARC Ай бұрын
That appears on all my composite output from my Genlock. I think it may be how it deals with the pointer being a sprite
@dannylgriffin

Doug, have you ever used a SuperGen? I always thought they were pretty good but I never tried anything else. They have two nice dissolve faders on top and a couple of switches--interpretive dissolve and a notch filter. I have never even seen an Amiga A1300 or A2300 , I don't even remember knowing about those although I must have seen ads in magazines.
@10MARC
@10MARC Ай бұрын
Yes, I own a Supergen but have never used it. I have the ZORRO II version. I don't have the heart to take out my Toaster 2000 to try it out! And the darn thing does not fit in my A3000!
@dannylgriffin
@dannylgriffin Ай бұрын
@@10MARC I'm assuming you're talking about your Toaster not fitting as the SuperGen is a small desktop box. I have used the SuperGen in real life, broadcasting for General Motors. I was the engineer responsible for the broadcast system in part of the corporation, so I took it to the next level and got Amiga 3000's and Scala. Eventually we transitioned to PC and the PC version of Scala, but that didn't exist way back when. All this was cheap. You should see the expensive video switcher some assh*le salesman convinced GM to purchase before I was hired. I've contemplated the Toaster and was trying to figure out a way to justify it to GM at the time (it was very early 1995). In the end, I couldn't for what we needed. As an engineer I have to justify everything financially, and as an engineer I could do magic with numbers and make 2+2 = 374. But GM wasn't ready to go into the next generation of video at the time so that was the deciding factor and then I moved on within the corporation.
