In today's video, I'm going to walk you through the process of making an Amish Friendship Bread starter. We'll go through the entire process from Day #1 - Day #10. And then when it's all done, we'll try it out and whip up a batch of blueberry pancakes. You can use this starter for all kinds of things - in much the same way you would use a sour dough starter. I plan on keeping this going through the winter, so there will be a lot more videos on using this in the coming months. Get your batch going now, so you can follow along on this adventure together ♥

Hey Rach! I may give this a "go"! Thanks for all your inspiration!🤗 Just to be clear, this is what I got as far as your instructions: Day 1 = 1/4c warm water + 2 1/4 tsp yeast (1 pkt), let sit 10 min, stir in 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour & 1 cup milk; Days 2 - 4 stir only; Day 5 feed: stir in 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour & 1 cup milk; Days 6 - 9 stir only; Day 10 feed: stir in 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 1/2 cups flour & 1 1/2 cups milk. Divide mixture and begin using ~ setting aside 1 cup of the mixture, to keep going as the main starter. Feed this starter as Day 1, marking it as Day 1, and repeating the previous process again through Day 10. Hope I got that down correctly.😄 I love all the things you share. You're so creative!😊👩‍🍳👩‍🌾👩‍🎨👩‍🏫 Todd, those were EPIC sausages!😀😋 Love you tons, guys! 💞

Exactly 💯, except you don't have to feed after you divide it on day 10 for your day 1 start, just pick up the next day with day 2

@@1870s Right, because the saved cup was fed before dividing on day 10. So, the 1 cup saved as the new starter is already ready for the Day 2 & 3 stir.😁 Thanks Rach! 🤗😗👑🍞

I was raised in the 90s. I remember my mom having a gallon zip lock bag of dough, i remember squeezing on the bag, the smell being wonderful. I forgot about it until just a week or so ago when i saw an inflated zip lock of dough on social media. It got me digging, and here I am now.

Yes, I still make Amish Friendship Bread every December for gifts. I’ve been keeping the starter going for about 25 years! I do freeze the starter each year, and have not had any problems. I can’t give the bags away-can’t find anyone with enough patience! I’ve resisted the pleas to make it multiple times a year! Keep them wanting!😊

I made this in the 1970's. Back then friends accepted the zip lock bag of starter and made their own for 10 days and passed it on. Now in 2024 I wonder if my friends would do this. We are all in our 70's now and not working. I am going to make the friendship bread and see what happens with my friends. I had one friend that froze her bags of starter. Thank you for your video that got me wanting to do it again.

I used to do it in the 90s. I would have two copies of the recipe, and daily directions, printed out to give with each loaf and starter. That way they could check off each day they worked on the starter, and the second copy, they could keep, to make copies, to pass on with their friendship bread starter. The recipe could be put inside a plastic sleeve, and checked off with an erasable marker, if they didn't want to keep making multiple copies to use themselves. I even did this bread in Saudi Arabia, when our family moved there because of my husband's job. We lived on a compound, with other American families, so it was nice to share this!

I was just sifting through my recipe pile...my Mom's, my Aunt's and my MIL's. They all gifted their recipes to me. I found the Friendship bread sheet in my MIL's stash and the memories started piling in so I called her up(she's in a senior's lodge now) to reminisce as this was one of the ways I was welcomed to this wonderful little farm community. Friendship bread starter became our joke, it was as bad as zucchini...LOL< lock your doors at the meetings ladies, or you'll get some! I might mix some up now and get back at it. Thanks for all your ideas(today and to come!)

I LOVE Amish Friendship Bread. I just baked some last week. My son and I spent all last year learning-he is homeschooled-breadmaking. We learned yeast breads, sourdough(we use a dry one so there's basically no maintenance on it), quick breads, and AFB. I keep several bags frozen so I can have it when I want and I don't have to have AFB going on the counter. I do the process, add to new bags, and freeze. To use it, I pull one out and let it sit on the counter for 2-3 hours, then bake. When I'm down to 1 in the freezer, I use it to do the 10 day process to make more and refill the freezer. Also, for the recipe, you use pudding...I use 1 vanilla and 1 banana. I also add golden raisins. It is phenomenal.

I’m so excited for this series! When I was in high school back in the 80’s the Amish starter bread went around like a chain letter, lol. We were all knee deep in sweet bread. I think my 11th grade class put on 10 lbs from the excess. We were bringing the bread to school, gifting it and doing whatever was possible to carry on the starter. You’d see a girl walking down the hall with jar in hand and take off running like you were in a track meet, ha! I wish I would have known all the things you could do with the starter so I could have given my mom a break in the kitchen. My mom made everything homemade. I’ve started my recipe journal with the starter and the pancake recipe and once I get going, I’ll have us stocked with baked goods on the counter and in the freezer for winter. Thanks for sharing Rachel! Your channel has been such an adventure in learning and inspiration for me.

Amish Friendship Bread was all the rage in my church 25 years ago. It got to the point that you could not pay anyone of take a starter. I made myself a starter about 10 years ago and have been using it every winter to make Amish bread. I freeze the starter during the rest of the year. Thanks for the reminder - I have to take it out of the freezer so I have some Amish Friendship Bread for Thanksgiving! Also - in addition to loaves, the batter makes fantastic muffins. Years ago I would make muffins for my kids’ lunches at school. Funny story - my son started asking for extra muffins to bring to school. Found out he was selling them to his friends!!! To this day my adult children still ask for Amish muffins. 😊

So crazy you posted this. My husband and I were just talking about it this weekend! We both grew up in/around Nappanee, IN. This bread definitely reminds me of the simple days of the 80s-early 90s when this was super popular. I recall my starter was always made in a gallon ziploc that I just smooshed around daily. This is how we gave and received it as well.

I did make a Friendship Bread back in 1960's but it was very different. You combined cans of fruit like peaches, pineapple, pears, with the starter and milk. Then after the 10 days you make a loaf of sweet bread that was DELICIOUS! giving away one of the loafs with a starter. If you didn't give some away, or make multiple things, you were soon overrun with it. I have looked everywhere for that recipe as I remember it being so moist and delicious but no luck. I will try your recipe as It is so simple and I love having things done to give away during the holidays. Thanks so much for going in depth with all the other recipes. I'll want to try them all. I did begin sourdough last year and have made three things with the starter discard: focaccia, pancakes, and a bread. I don't like sourdough but do like using the starter as the focaccia is wonderful as were the pancakes but the bread was a rock. Ive kept it going over a year and just don't have the heart to toss it now. I will try bread again as there is no reason for it not to rise. I think my bread flour was too old.

My mom was gifted a starter when I was in middle school and we were all obsessed. Thank you for this trip down memory lane. I may have to create my own now!

I just started my sourdough starter this weekend and I'm very excited about it. Now I'm going to have to get an Amish friendship starter going too. There's nothing better than fresh bread.

My Mom had "Herman" growing in a bowl in our refrigerator, which at the time I found really creepy. The smell was a bit off putting to me. Then she made the sweet bread from it and I changed my attitude completely. YUM

Thanks Rachel for the reminder and inspiration! Yes, I used to have this starter going in my kitchen years ago. There were so many ways to vary the recipe. I was actually talking to a friend about it recently so I guess it’s time to make the starter again! Blessings to you and Todd. ❤️🙏😊

My mom use to make the Amish Friendship Bread and I have her recipe copy. The first time I made it was 36 years ago. I'm 63 now and I've made it and stopped, made it and stopped and right now I actually have 2 starters in the freezer. It's been a year or more since I made any. This vlog makes me want to get it out and going again. I always do mine in a gallon ziploc bag. When I take it out of the freezer, I let it thaw and that is day one for anyone that may want to freeze their starter when you get tired of making it. OR you can let it thaw and start with day 6 directions. Blessings!
