Having been blissfully unaware of the methods of control and "ownership" of women growing up in the Amish, Elizabeth was not prepared for the dark and brutal marriage that followed. Her husband forbid her to going to the hospital for her 8 births which left her in questionable and dangerous hands. After she finally got the courage to get police involved, her community put her in shunning for 4 years straight, before she realized she could no longer be Amish and escaped with her 7 sons.

The strength and resilience of this woman is unfathomable. I believe her childhood helped to make her strong. Her parents were loving and also had a rebellious streak that was definitely passed on. It blows my mind that people would be so invested in their ways that they would overlook the safety and wellbeing of someone in their own community. Im so glad she had help along the way in spite of it. Im happy she found her independence and personal sovereignty as Shelise says. So good to hear her laugh! I am so glad that the Sheriff she encountered was an AWESOME police officer. He gave her the space she needed to talk, without leading. He knew and recognized just how dangerous the situation was-I don’t know the particulars of the story she told him, but based on the events she described throughout the marriage I was thinking “she was one rage away from dying at any moment.” Good on him for recognizing it and more importantly BELIEVED her, and instantly made her aware just how threatening the situation was and that they were NOT going to wait. The Sheriff did EXACTLY what he needed to do. That was a GOOD man. I am glad she had such loving and caring parents. They had their faults, but they created one tough lady. My heart hurts for all the pain and trauma her kids went through, and I know something like that will stick with you. I am glad she moved to a community that was overall support active and caring, despite the issues she had with the shunning and the restrictions placed on her. They really could have turned their backs completely on her, they didn’t. They made it safe for her to raise her kids while they were going through the initial stages of post-abuse living. They gave her money to live independently without having to worry about who would be raising her kids if she had to work. I think it’s okay to thank them for their generosity and overall kindness, while also recognizing that trying to push her back to her horribly abusive ex in order to be unshunned and excommunicated if she refused to forgive and reconcile with him was absolutely wrong.

I’ve only heard of one or 2 women who got murdered in the Amish community, it’s very rare as the Amish believe in non resistance. More likely what happens is the women commit suicide. Something I recently was told is that 80% of teenage relationships are abusive relationships. Parents may talk about abusive relationships, but don't go into details about what that looks like or how to identify an abusive relationship. So I immediately went to my son and talked about, in detail, how to identify red flags, and how to listen and look for his own red flags. I also gave examples and and talked about how the people in the relationship don't always see or find ways to justify abusive behavior.

Accidents can happen, I would remind him of that fact next time he comes close to the line with his abuse. I would say it then gaslight him and pretend you never did, he must just be paranoid and he must be thinking that himself. Turn the tables and play the game, he will most likely leave you alone because it won’t be fun anymore to abuse you, he will need to find a new plaything to feed his narcissistic supply. The only time you should give him any attention is if your trying to manipulate him other than that “gray rock” him to death and give him no interactions beyond what benefits you.

I’m an abuse victim as a child that was adopted at birth . I’m not a survivor because the trauma despite my parents getting therapy is so great that I don’t know if I’ll still be here in five years. I’m not trying to make this about me, but it’s so frustrating how people don’t understand the true struggle of abuse and how it affects people even after they have changed or moved on. Her abusers will literally never understand what they did to her and they get to move on. She seems so happy despite her experiences. I love that for her and I hope I’ll make it to that point.

I used to have really negative thoughts about myself and a low self esteem while growing up. I discovered mantra meditation around 30 years of age and learned mantra meditation could change my thoughts. I would recite a positive mantra 45 minutes a day 5 days a week and would change my mantra every week. I noticed my thoughts became more calm and over time my thoughts became more positive. Also, recommend reading The Sedona Method by Hale Dwoskin. The Sedona Method teaches that when we resist feelings they persist and that we should feel feelings until they release. Feeling feelings can be painful, but it is best to acknowledge the pain and feel it than to resist the painful feelings. What we resist persists. Also, see a therapist as well.

Its horrifying how often in these groups, women are told their sole purpose is to have as many children as possible but no real reproductive healthcare or even education happens. We've known childbirth is one of the most dangerous things people can go through for forever. Also has she had her thyroid tested? With the weight gain and that definitely looks like a goitre? It just goes to show how often these groups allow people with extreme personality disorders to thrive, not everyone with ASPD is dangerous, but a hell of a lot are

The men can't let the women think they're too important, otherwise the women will realize they have all the power. Theres also a rejection of medicine and medical intervention in some Christian derived communities. Also, in the US in general, mothers are not cared for very well. 6 weeks maternity leave? Insanity!

My dr warned me childbirth was still hugely risky, I think she said it really hasn’t changed that much from many many years ago. She was worried once I met back up in my life with my fiancé who I have known since I was a teen, that I would want to have children and I have serious health issues so she lectured me for 45 minutes on all the reasons it was still too risky.

Women are baby making machines in these groups, their uterus is the only thing that matters for their leaders, little they care about the quality of life of the mother and their offspring, absolutely inhumane 😮

I was married to a narcissist with anti personality disorder for thirty years. I suffered horrible abuse including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual & financial abuse. He kicked me in the abdomen when I was seven months pregnant with my third child. I am amazed that Elizabeth escaped knowing how hard it was for me. God bless her and her children.

Oh my gosh, I love Elizabeth!! I teared up a few times and that is unusual for me. I was mennonite, but one time when we moved, we bought an amish house, because it was the only big enough for us 12 kids 😆 and a lot of our neighbors were amish, growing up there. My heart goes out to her, and I love her strong faith and courage so much. ❤❤❤

Hi ! I just spotted your channel on my home page! I too, was born & raised in a cult-the Jehovah’s Witness cult! This year marks 11 years I’ve been out! I was 43 when I left! I was born in & all my family were raised the same way! My 2 kids got me out, they showed me all the things going on & once I clicked onto Google & then KZfaq, I couldn’t believe I was in a cult and didn’t even know😱 if you have any questions, ask away!! I’d be happy to answer!!!😃

The sids story breaks my heart. I was only able to have one son because of ovarian cancer. My 2 biggest fears were him being kidnapped or dying from sids. My anxiety was so awful I put the crib next to our bed. I would wake up almost every hour and make sure he was ok until he was about 1. I still was terrified about him being kidnapped.
