I mark mine 'nails', 'screws' , hex nuts etc. .40 hex nuts, 5-56 screws...Criminals don't use much hardware...

For labelling I cut the part off the cardboard box the ammo came in that shows all the details of the ammo. Then use clear packing tape to stick the cardboard label on the ammo box. This way you know exactly what is inside and it only takes 1 minute to label your ammo boxes. For a moisture absorber get pure silica cat litter for about $8 for a large bag. Put about 1/2 cup in a coffee filter and staple it closed. Cheap and fast. Just make sure you get pure silica cat litter. Recreational vehicle stores also sell something for absorbing moisture which is good also. Cat litter is really cheap and works well though.

First don't is "Don't use plastic ammo cans" for long term storage. The first do is, do refresh the desiccant once a year by placing it in the oven @ 150 F for 30 - 45 minutes or microwave for 10 - 20 minutes on high.

For the bug out guys or just a fun day at the range I like to keep a mix of all my major cals in two of my 30 cal cans. Some 12 gauge some 9mm and .45 and some 5.56 and a box or two of .22lr in them. So if your in a hurry to go to the range or something else you know for a fact you have rounds for all of your stuff. Its not the whole stash but something to shoot for almost everything I have. Nice vids on this man!

This looks like a good idea. Personally, I would get identically keyed locks for each. They come in 4 packs, but you can order however many you want from a hardware store or locksmith. They would all work with the same key.

Glad I could add something worthwhile to the discussion. I know at one point, back in the 1990s, I had so many different calibers that sometimes going out to shoot meant leaving something more esoteric at home, and meant having less than and ideal amount of ammo, even at the cheapest prices...not to mention all the different magazines to buy too.

Hey,Like your videos...I commented on the Part 2, and mentioned you can get Blackhawk! .30 cal cans for around 11.00. Another thing to consider is always fill one or two cans to capacity and leave them alone, then use a third (or more) to put loose rounds or boxes for range trips. I do that with my ammo storage. I buy a case of my preferred caliber, and load a can with it, and store it in my preps. I take another can, and rotate out the older rounds for the range. Also, if my range or a store has a good deal on ammo, I may grab a box while I am at the range, and replace (by round count) what I am shooting. That way, I keep my shooting supplies fairly steady, and I have a better chance, especially in the coming election months, of keeping my ammo supplies fairly well stocked.

I really enjoy your channel and perspective man. The plastic ammo cans look like the same plano ones walmart has for about 5 bucks. Lately I've been really liking the battle ammo packs that are already sealed for moisture protection. Makes for a good option for bugging in or out and I've slowly getting the battle pack ammo packs of 120-200 rounds of 223/556 and only buying them when I find em on sale so I'm basically paying the same price or less than buying the ammo without the battle pack.

What you do is if you are good with wood building. You build a framed carrier with a handle that holds 4-6 of those cans each. And you build a few of them so you can make 4 trips instead of 10.

Use the tool boxes for your magazines

Check your local Army Navy store for .50 cal cans. I get them from my local gun shop, $10 a can I think is what I paid.

note to self... never show anyone your 100,000 + rounds of ammo...and never put it one big box.....unless your box is an old rail car box. ;-)

put your shotgun and larger rifle ammo in 50 Cal cans.put your pistol ammo and intermediate Cal rifle ammo in 30 Cal cans.also fill up one of those plastic cans with ammo and drop it on the floor.

Here in East Mesa AZ the COSTCO here sells metal rubber gasket ammo boxes. 2 together. I think I paid $20 for them or was it $10.00 Been a while I plan to purchase 5 more which actually comes to 10 metal ammo GI style ammo boxes

best to split your cans up a little.Three in the basement, one can in the barn ,two in the old junk car in the back yard -you get the idea.

I live in my bug in location also. Doesn't make sense to join the hordes trying to flee. Have you watched the video that tests these plastic ammo cans in a swimming pool? For long term storage you would benefit yourself to gradually switch over to metal 50 cal. ammo cans. I lost a lot of ammo due to corrosion because of a poor seal. Change out one can per week or one every two weeks. (two of those 30 cal plastic boxes will fit a 50 cal metal can.)

Yes for the M2A1 .50 Cal metal ammo cans ! And after a stockpile of a few thousand bullets police your Brass and reload. Remember that projectiles and primers take up less room than a full size loaded bullet. Save your factory ammo for self defense. And lead bullets are great for killing paper targets and the paper zombies... And the KZfaq channel "Nutnfancy" said he was running low on some of his stockpiled ammo for testing... ! ! ! Well, I like how the Ammo is sorted out and Labeled nicely in this video. I try to segregate my ammo a little bit - but it ends up having more than one caliber per Ammo Can. I do try to hide my Guns and Ammo where they are not out in plain view for anyone entering a room.

I hunt pawn shops, gun shops, yard sales and gun shows almost everyday (I'm retired). I need to do a lot more organizing and much less hunting for deals. Those ammo boxes are garbage. Milsurp is still the best for your shtf ammo supply. 3 gal food grade buckets for the stuff you shoot regularly---for us that shoot alot, lol. Use mylar bags with O2 absorber, the same as storing dry foods such as beans and rice. Same method for spare parts sets, cleaning tools, and pretty much everything else

Sorry, but I will not store my ammunition in a plastic ammo box. I only use the genuine U.S.G.I. ammo boxes. I don’t trust the seals on a plastic ammo box. Pick up a plastic ammo box when it’s full of ammunition, and watch what happens to the lid.

Even if those were full, I wouldn’t consider it a crazy amount of ammunition. A full can of 308 win is only 200 rounds for example. You can only fit 4 boxes of 12 gauge in a can which is 100 shells. 1000 rounds of 5.56 is the best way to buy it and a single range day is usually a few hundred shots fired or more. Anyone bitching about the quantity of ammo there has no concept of firearms and is likely some crazy Karen who wants to take your guns from you.

Have you done a video on ammunition compatibility? I have found over the last 4 decades of shooting, that I try to have common calibers now...It does a couple of things. First, it allows me to shoot more, since I can buy mass bulk ammo and use it in multiple firearm platforms. Second, it makes it easy to knock out the labeling for the boxes. Also, if you decide to get into reloading, it is less sets of dies to buy.

I don't plan on bugging out. Only if if it is necessary to protect my family, i.e. extremely civil unrest, aftermath of a tornado, etc. I will get them to safety and then come back to work. Otherwise, I'm staying put.

First, I appreciate your calm, even, matter-of-fact attitude in these videos. You're presenting yourself in a reasonable and respectable way, and that's a good contrast to what many people on KZfaq do. While I have criticisms of this series of videos, I appreciate how you've presented your opinions. Secondly, as I look at the entire series, I realize that you're just describing your own journey through the decision-making process of how to store ammunition. That's a valid journey to describe in a KZfaq series for a channel like yours. However, the all uppercase "DON'T DO THIS!!!!" title made me believe that you were going to describe a problem that would present a serious safety hazard in ammunition storage or would lead to premature degradation of ammunition so that the ammunition wouldn't be available to use in a time of need. These videos didn't cover either of those topics, so the title felt a bit like a "click-bait" type of tactic. Finally, I'll make some comments regarding the substance of your strategies and tools. I agree that storing ammunition in multiple smaller containers is going to be more convenient for organizational purposes. As you said in this video, having each type of ammo separated and labeled means that you can just grab a small can anytime you want to go to the range and do some shooting. If you don't feel like taking an entire plastic storage can to the range, you can still find the particular ammunition that you want more easily if that ammunition is segregated by caliber in smaller containers. If the likelihood of needing to "bug out" is low, there's nothing wrong with using those plastic containers. The money you save buying those versus buying metal containers can be put to other uses. If you ever needed to "bug out," the reduced weight of plastic versus metal might also mean being able to stretch every gallon of gasoline a little further. In a bad situation, each gallon of gasoline will become that much more precious. That's another reason for segregating ammunition so that you won't be transporting any ammunition that won't fit in a gun that you are taking. I disagree that having ammunition in multiple smaller containers is necessarily an advantage in a "bug out" situation. While I haven't made serious preparations yet, my plan would be to put all of my "bug out" ammunition in as few containers as possible and to get a dolly or hand cart to move those containers around the house or to a truck. In that situation, I'd rather put a dolly beside the container; tip the container onto the dolly so that I'm never lifting the full weight; roll the dolly through the house and up a ramp into the back of the truck; and reverse the tipping process to put the container into the truck than to make multiple trips to and from the truck. In a "bug out" situation, I expect time to be limited, and being able to move things quickly will be critical. This strategy requires having a ramp to pull the dolly into the truck bed, but the ramp is going to be helpful loading everything else that one wants to take in that situation. When I reached my destination, I'd reverse the process. If I were forced to abandon the truck and carry ammunition on my person for a long hike, I wouldn't want that ammunition in boxes of any kind. If I'm going to be forced to hike in that kind of situation, I'd want both hands free to hold my rifle or to hold a hiking staff. I'd want the ammunition packaged to be worn in a backpack so that the weight is distributed on my hips instead of dangling at the end of my arms and making my fingers tired. I'd want to eliminate the weight of even the plastic ammunition can. If I'm going to be planning for a "bug out" situation, I'm going to find some kind of bag for storing ammunition. Another possibility as an overall "bug out" tool and a way to carry more ammunition and other supplies if I had to abandon my vehicle, I'd look at building my own version of the old Mormon hand carts. (If you aren't familiar with those, many 1856 crossings of the Mormon/Oregon Trail were made using handcarts that an individual could push. The idea was to travel light using these handcarts.. A few ox-drawn wagons went with the party to carry community goods for the whole party, but families carried their personal items in carts that one or two people could push. Everyone walked rather than riding a wagon. The primary advantage was that the cost of making the journey was lower when every family didn't need to buy a full wagon and team. Two parties ran into disaster after being caught in a storm, but the real reason for that disaster is that they started too late in the summer. Parties that started at a reasonable time had great success.) If I built myself a cart of this kind, the cart would be useful as a utility cart wherever I ended up. If I had to abandon my vehicle, I could still prioritize supplies and walk away with more supplies than I could ever carry on my back or in my hands. Obviously, this cart must be designed and built before the situation arises, but the cart would still be fun to have. Another nice thing about the larger tool boxes is that they'd be useful in many ways when I reached my destination. For instance, if I bought half a dozen of those tool boxes and used them for storage of all of my bug out supplies from ammunition to food to clothing, I'd arrive at my destination with quite a few of those boxes. Many of the survival teachers say that a person needs a bed of some kind to avoid sleeping directly on the ground. Several of the tool boxes lined up together on flattened ground would be just as comfortable as a bed made of rough logs, and I could arrange the boxes more quickly and with less effort than I could cut the logs. Every storage strategy has strengths and weaknesses. With my declining health, I may not bother to prep because I'm barely surviving in civilization. Surviving outside civilization is becoming a moot point. I'm fine with people doing whatever they want, and I realize that my suggestions have weaknesses as well. I just don't like the "DON"T DO" approach, particularly on the first video. Thanks,
