Well considering the Recto's preamp is more or less a copy of the SLO100s, and Eddie made the 5150 after using the SLO100 for a while, it makes sense why both of these sorta sound a like.

Well the cab contributes to like 80% of the tone. So I'm not surprised how close these 2 sounded. You should do a 3 amps comparison, I bet the third would be also quite similar. :)

That octave drop tuning is sick! Also the EVH is my favorite. Both boosted and unboosted it has that high end bite I love in amps. The Mesa boogie is kinda scooped. However when boosted, the boogie sounds incredible, the mid range is filled up and it has more definition.

Glad you're shooting out this Evh 5150. I recently bought one and was unsure if I had made the right call but I'm watching you shoot it out to the other options I had (mesa, Peavey) and I'm really glad I bought it. And now I know I don't really need a boost so I don't have to spend the cash on it lol. Thanks fluff!

Sick vid man Both sound killer, both sound great. Imo when ever I play two amps on the same cab they always sound extremely similar. I've come to hold the opinion that the cab makes a huge difference in tone. Rock on man 🤟🤟

I think this goes more to EL34 vs 6L6 debate and voiceing, as they both perform differently, and have different mid ranges. I prefer the EVH, but to be honest not by much. Theyre different but similar enough to where the best solution would be double tracking the guitars, one through evh and one through the dual rec to blend

They both sound killer! I’m looking to get an EVH someday Hey man, I own a Randall T2 400 W amp head, actually I do have two of them and one Randall V2 400 W with and EQ I love this amps. I believe they came out sometime early 2000’s if I’m not wrong. I felt in love with the sound and I run mine with a maxon OD808. I bought my first one around 2008/2009 I have got a few nice compliments here and there about my tone, but I really haven’t seen many other guitarist using this amp. Probably a few but everyone uses different settings and pedals. I will use this amp forever. But I would love to to hear what it sounds like in one of your awesome vids and hear a different opinion about it since I don’t really know anyone else that uses this amp. Hey fluff, I love the tone you got out of these guys! And your mixes always sound excellent💪🏻 The Rectifiers have, in my experience, received a lot of bad vibes from people as being unclear and in general a disappointment compared to its high gain brethren. And a lot of the demos I have listened to online confirms this. You however make it sound quite sick and your guitars always sit so well in the mix. Care to do a vid on dialing in an amp like this for recording as well as how you go about mixing a song as demo'd in this video? General recording/mixing etc vids would be quite cool too since your stuff sounds so damn good.. Even though I know the answer to all of this is simple: Grow a beard.

This is the first time I haven’t been to tell the difference in amps on a my phone. I’m usually pretty good at hearing it but they sound the same to me. I need to re-listen on my studio headphones. But I do know they both sound awesome. I really want one of the EVH el34 50 and a 6534+. Turns out they just sound similar. Lol. Both awesome though. I couldn’t get Mesa amps to work for me though so I’m going back to orange and some variant of a 5150.

MAN! This was a tough one... going in I honestly thought I would be able to say the Mesa without even listening, but the EVH took it for me this time. Both are fantastic amps, though.

Thinking of buying the evh 5150 el34 100w can you play that at a bedroom level not to sure what wattage affects to be honest coming from a solid state amp? Living in an apartment for another year but getting a house after that.

It’s Mesa all the way for me! I just got a Mark V and it’s my first Mesa amp! I did a First Look video on it but haven’t had a chance to do an in depth review yet. I love EVH and have 2 Striped series so I really want to love the 5150 but I’m just not there yet: great shootout!

Felicitations good video! I think no needs boost to sound heavy and fat. Maybe just a post EQ on the mix for a record, that's all. Do you have original tube on each amp? Any specific bias control adjustement?

Can you do a comparison between the 5150 III el34 50w and a modern dual rectifier? And, in this video here, which amp do you prefer if you had to choose one, the 5150 3 or a dual rectifier boosted if you had to choose one?

I've owned two Dual Rectifiers and am considering buying an EVH 50 watt Stealth. I love the Mesa sound but am strongly considering something new. Do you have a recommendation?

Both do metal. On a budget? Get a 5150.. Pro in a band and want to tour and record? Get a recto. But honestly they both do metal just fine. Be a better player if you cant make one work.

5150 EL34 vs 6L6 - the level of detail in your clips would be great in hearing the difference.

Both great amps. I am using them hard left and right for 7 string hard rock metal stuff. But mine’s the EVH 6L6. The lows, fizz and endless sustain of the Recto and the mids and clarity of the EVH. Sounds on point.

Cool shoot out bruh. I know the “norm” is to throw a Boost in front of a Recto but I find my own Rev F (serial #902) to not even need one to sound tight and articulate. Then again, I don’t play the heavier stuff you play 🤷🏻‍♂️. Cheers 🍻

I love these shootouts, but I wish you would add a track at the end COMBINING the amps. So 5150 on one side and a Mesa on the other; just to hear how they play WITH eachother.

Hey Fluff, have you ever thought about checking out the Mesa Boogie Electra-Dyne? Its been discontinued, but I'm curious about how it sounds compared to something like a Dual Rec. Kim Thayil of Soundgarden has had an Electra-Dyne in his live rig for years and it sounds amazing.

What's the setting on the Mesa ? Those knobs are nightmare to see and I miss a few starting point to dial a good tone on my 2009 Recto. God knows they're pretty though to dial, the way the EQ reacts seems nothing but black magic to me. Oh and BTW, did you used a hard low cut on the mics ?

Love my 90s dual rec, it's amazing when paired with a 5150 block.

I'm playing in a metal band as the only guitarist, and thinking about getting a second amp head to run stereo... The bass player would also be adding some distortion thru darkglass pedals, helping to fill out that "doubling sound" that is missing from not having two guitarists. I like the sound of the EVH better than the Rectifier, but I'm wondering which would sound best blended with the amp I already have, a Peavey 6505+. Feel like the Rectifier would probably give it more girth instead of just doubling up on the clear cutting mids of the EVH and 6505+.

Excellent analogy. I would either run 5150 on left/right and the mesa the opposite or stereo with mesa on low part and 5150 for the rest. Crank it!!

Seemed like I heard more clarity in the low end on the recto. All in all awesome to hear them side by side. This Might seem odd but how about a Peavey XXX against the Rectifier just a thought.

I really didn't expect them to sound so similar! I also didn't expect to prefer the EVH 5150 over the almighty Dual Rec! The EVH sounded a little bit tighter, crisper, and wider than the Dual Rec IMO, but I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference if they weren't A/B-ed.

It's crazy to me how similar these amps sound in a full mix. By themselves the differences are more apparent but still very similar.

was the mesa using the 6l6's or was it also using el34? 6l6 in a recto is the classic mesa sound , but el34 is more modern sounding in them and so if the recto and the 5153 are both running el34's I can see why theyd get pretty similar

Pretty cool! But really hard to make heads or tails of it-for me. You were tuned down to Q, and you were going to a lower chord every time you switched to the Mesa. Great stuff, Fluff, I would just like to have heard you A-B the raw tones with the boosted tones. Then in a mix with the same riff to reduce the variables. I thought the EVH had a little sizzle in the high end. I prefered the recto but both did sound great. I'd like to hear some Framus amps in shootouts.

Vintage rectifiers sound a lot better than the modern ones.

EVH un boosted / Boogie boosted. Blended they’d both sound pretty great. I’d like to hear a shoutout between the EVH, the Kraken and the Archon. They all have similar DNA to my ear.

I wouldn't call it low end, but the EVH had this sort of fuller sound but not in like bass? like it just had more information in that lower register that filled out the speakers more? maybe its just how you mixed it? Maybe I'm crazy? i dunno! but they both were excellent and i'd be happy with either! lol

I have a three channel Recto (pre 2010 though) and a 5150. I hear the similarities even between THOSE two. I like the Recto alot (just purchased) and am going to use both in conjunction for recording the more extreme songs of the songs I write

The boost seemed to push it to more of a lo-fi kind of sound. I'm going with unboosted in this context, but there is a time and a place for the boost.

Personally I like the 5150 III better. Something about the entire tone sounds "tighter"? Idk if that's the exact word I'm looking for. They're almost indistinguishable though. Both kickass amps!

Came in rooting for the Recto. Left with a new respect for the 5150.

I feel their gain structure sounds closer to the same, but the tone of the EVH is just slightly brighter and tighter overall. Both sound Amazing and that Mesa has some round bottom.

Love dual recs. I went one further and put kt77s in my dual rec. My absolute favorite amp of all time.
