The Dobbertin Surface Orbiter is a hand built amphibious vehicle built by Rick Dobbertin
The Orbiter was fabricated completely from stainless steel and was designed to circumnavigate the Earth, over land and sea without any type of support vessel.
For nearly three years, Rick was in an unprecedented position to study amphibious craft design having actually lived aboard the Orbiter throughout a 28-country, 38-state adventure dubbed Project Earth-Trek.
During the trip, which covered 30,000 miles on land and 3,000 miles at sea, he encountered everything on land from the smooth, well-kept highways of the United States to the pot-holed, wash-boarded dirt paths in the frontier of Colombia.
While on the water, he encountered every sea condition from the dead-calm waters in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York to eighteen-foot seas in the Caribbean's Mona Passage on a crossing from The Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico.
Throughout the trip, Rick also had the advantage of seeing, first hand, the interest generated by the Orbiter. After talking to people in every port, he was struck by the realization of how indispensable a safe, fast, reliable, user friendly amphibian would be and the tremendous worldwide market there is for such a unique craft.

Hay at $200,000.00 it's a steal...! Lmao...! No really, if you are planing to make a trip around the world, what better way to do it.. I admire this guy he was trying to save his marriage with this trip... I was paying attention to her complaints, and I can say some of the things she had mentioned were things Mr. Dobbertin should have addressed before leaving for the road or sea... I mean no air conditioning and a porta pottie ... What was he thinking....?.

Why aren't our scientists researching an engine that can heat and split water molecules and sustain that energy and utilize it into power?
@zeroclockgaming
@zeroclockgaming 8 жыл бұрын
+Vincent2wice ermm because the splitting costs energy....it costs energy to get energy (every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction)

Entropy, it takes more energy to electrolyze the water into H2 and O2 than you can recover by burning the hydrogen and oxygen (thus re combining them) to get power to run the motor. it is an inherently "no win" scenario. by the way, you dont heat water to split it, you run an electric charge through it, this "cracks" the water into 2 hydrogen and i oxygen per molecule of water. there is a quote from early science fiction writer Robert Anson Heinlein that applies here: TANSTAAFL, or:"There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch"

I like it. but, in the sea, so too low seat position, landmarks will hide behind of waves. i think so I'll get lost if no GPS.

I remember reading in an article that his biggest problem was police pulling him over just to take a look, not that he was doing anything wrong. That would get really old in a hurry. It all seems like an ego-trip, since one could do what this does while spending way less money, going faster and seeing more.

Looks like a gas hog and most INEFFICIENT way to cross open ocean. I bet it gets 1 MPG at sea. And no secondary engine?? (just in case)
