Hypothetical question for you: what if frogs ruled the Earth? Not just terms in terms of numbers… but in terms of their position in the ecosystem.
Amphiterra is a speculative biology project by the talented artist and writer Roxy Valdez, which imagines the incredible and surreal forms frogs might achieve if given the perfect environment to evolve. While the world of Amphiterra often looks like an alien planet, the artist imagines it’s actually an alternate timeline of Earth, where subtly different climatic conditions led to early amphibians outcompeting the first dinosaurs and protomammals.
What creatures will develop and thrive in this drastically different history? Let’s leap back 252 million years, and begin our tour through the timeline of Amphiterra...

Eon toad is not actually too unique in freezing its body to hybernate. There are some species of frogs that can and often do just that.

An animal evolving a foam-like cover instead of fur is such an interesting and original concept, goddamn. Now imagine if those foam glands slowly made the foam more firm. Over millions of years, the glands adapt. Eventually the foam glands evolve into something similar to hair follicles that produce very soft bulbs of keratin. We now have frog sheep made of cloud bubbles. This sounds like such an adorable fairy tale but also oddly possible in real life

It could evolve from them eating calcium in a similar way to ungulates today, creating a semi-permanent structure exactly like hair, hardening in a way similar to expanding fire-stop construction foam.

I’m sorry. But I laughed every time you said “greater moist boy.” Every time. This was another great speculative world! And I liked that it was an alternate history of our own planet. The last few videos have taken us to some truly insane alien worlds, which I have LOVED, but it always feels nice to come back home and speculate about our own pale blue dot, and all the ways it could have turned out differently. I love your channel so much.

@@gshaindrich Hi, I'm the creator of Amphiterra. I'd like to say I put a lot of effort into this, but I do agree that the lack of tadpoles is an issue. I actually did have some thoughts of them - point is, I had to make all of Amphiterra in about a year. I haven't had the time since to continue it, but if I do, I really value your feedback! 🐸

This was absolutely ribbiting. The last entry was the most interesting, considering they had grooming and the ability to make unique looks from said grooming. Kind of gross, since that's basically a coat of frog boogers, but it's still very unique.

I was so excited when I first found this youtube channel because I literally never found a channel that liked speculative biology and the same genres of horror like I do. Hmm, interesting! It does make me wonder though, since these early frogs outcompeted the Synapsids and Archosaurs (thereby stopping the rise of Mammals, Birds, and Crocodilians-- all of which are major predators towards the frogs of our timeline), surely there'd still be some reptiles still present in Amphiterra? Squamates (Lizards and Snakes) could easily inhabit the dryer reaches of Amphiterra, serving as both prey and predators to the also present (arguably more Toads than) Frogs? Not to mention, Frogs aren't the only amphibians out there that would likely thrive in this alternate world; Salamanders, Newts, and Caecilians could also have some place (The Caecilians in particular could serve as a niche-replacement for our Real World snakes!)

It would be really interesting interesting to see a world dominated by ants next. What if we terraformed a planet Epic of Serina style, but instead of dropping off birds on it we put Argentine or Leafcutter ants?

I’d like to see one about different farm animals. I imagine a super advanced future human civilization builds this planet filled with cows chickens, sheep and other animals. Most likely for the purpose of mass-producing meat, wool and eggs. But the humans lose control of this farm planet, and the animals are left to their own devices.

Has there ever been any speculative evolution of the octopus? I would very much like to see that! Since there have already been xenobiologists who have described the rise of octopus since they have massive amounts of neurons (e.g. throughout the animal, including each leg, which has the ability to feel, taste and smell) it is known that they have a great degree of intelligence from using that different type of "brain." They already have their own video channels such as 'Octolab' etc, but I remember someone showing drawings of octos swinging through trees. I'd dearly love to see these creatures advance thru the eons!

This is late, but "Children of Ruin" by Adrian Tchaikovsky is exactly this concept. It heavily dives into the language and logistics behind an Octopod society. It's one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it

One thing about the inhabitated lodge: given its a desert animal (I think) it would make more sense if its tadpoles inhabit its back. A protected reservoir seems tl be good for tadpoles in a water poor enviroment. And given how beecomb frogs already carry their eggs/tadpoles in Chambers of there belly, this would feel like a nice nod to this real animal. In addition this could be a way to get "mammalian" or "placentalian" amphibians of sorts, if it would continue to evolve along this line

I know a lot of Amphibia fans will mention Amphibia, but this novel technically came first, so I guess you could say that Amphiterra is Amphibia 0.5. This could technically work as a prequel for Amphibia as well.

Can you imagine a speculative evolution based on different animals like cows? Although rather docile and herbivorous, evolution would eventually lead to speciation and we would eventually have a whole food chain, including predators. Imagine carnivorous cows.

I love speculative biology, but this project has one problem as I see it. The idea is presented that these amphibians wouldn't transition to forms of exothermic metabolism. We have evidence that both crocodilians and dinosaurs could change from warm-blooded to cold-blooded and back again. Birds, being warm-blooded reptiles, show the transition from ectothermic to exothermic lifestyles. Why wouldn't amphibians do the same over the eons in one shape or another?

This Spec World has more holes in it than a hairnet but I think it's fantastic! With Spec Worlds there is a balance of trying to keep the characteristics of the progenitor species into the resultant lifeforms. So sometimes logic has to be bypassed for creativity. For example the foamy frog boys is amusingly good but to get that species from Earth's timeline takes a lot of evolutionary manipulation and a chunk of artistic licence. Logically, as soon as an endothermic species evolves, the potential for it to become dominant increases after sudden major environmental change. Archosaurs after the Permian event, Mammals and birds after K-T event. So while it's pretty unlikely that frog world would exist ( maybe on a planet with no chance of asteroid impact, powerful geomagnetic field, uniform crust with no weak spots for cataclysmic volcanism) , it's fun to see froggo world speculation 🤠 (BTW , ectotherms and exotherms are the same unless I'm missing something in your comment. Endotherms are "warm blooded" 😉

@@roxyvaldez4190 well i love it, a great use of imagination and creativity. Your illustrations are beautiful. Keeping it on Earth does limit your scope though, froggos will be competing with lots of other organisms that may out evolve them ( arthropods for example) Maybe for planet frog2 , some sort of Panspermia scenario? A delivery of frozen frog spawn goes awry and lands on a forgotten half terraformed planet that humans abandoned because of the humidity ( or something). Froggonauts take over and Planet Croak is born!

I love the way the froggos are displayed. Alone in their environment or displayed in a portrait of sorts as the splendid fragon near the end. Might use this for my project later, a lot less anatomically correct stuff there lol

There were several things that were not taken into account when evolving over time. They stuck way too closely to frog morphology and tried to hammer-fit it into each of the niches. Amphibians have varied morphology now that were advantageous for land dwelling amphibians but were not mentioned. Amphibians that become completely terrestrial without need for water as part of their life cycle no longer meet the definition of "amphibian". Every evolved amphibian retained frog eyes and body structure. Evolution is also influenced by things never mentioned as well. Predator prey relationships drive evolution. Fast running prey animals and predictors are an example. Size also dictates evolution due to environmental factors. Amphibians respiratory system is a limiting factor as many don't have lungs and breathe by uptake of oxygen through the skin or primitive lungs. This limits size. The larger the animal the more oxygen is needed. That's why lungs evolved. This would also change mouth and nose shape.

Technically there are species of toads that live almost entirely without a pool of water, except for in their tadpole forms, which the video mentioned they still have. So as long as they have an aquatic tadpole state, they’re amphibious. You made a lot of true points, but nature’s ability to branch out is almost entirely limitless.

I love these what if speculative documentaries! I love the ideas of what if some animals were the dominant species. Friggin love the Moist Bois and the Freeple. My favorite idea is a cephalopod world. In the game Splatoon, the lore is people died to a massive war and sea life took hold. It's kinda hinted their evolution was rapid due to either radiation, science gone wrong, or the lack of mammalian predators. So I wonder what a squid or octo world would be like. Would both evolve simultaneously like the Inklings and Octolings did? Would civilization rise again? I dunno, I wonder what a realistic Splatoon world would be where sealife, specifically invertebrates, evolved.

Cool! One of the things that annoys me a little is that when people make octopus people/animals, they often forget that the mass of flesh that is their body is their abdomen. So I would like to see someone using this logic

Interesting, though I'd certainly like to know how she solved the problem of amphibian reproduction in her book. In our world, the amphibious ancestors of reptiles evolved the *Amniote Egg,* allowing for them to roam far from bodies of water previously necessary for reproduction. The *Amniote Egg* further led to the evolution of the dinosaurs, birds, & (eventually) the *Placental Mammals* - so it's a pretty significant deal. That said, looking in the fossil record, there were some truly remarkable relatives of modern *Amphibians* filling an astonishing variety of ecological niches. One major branch of their evolutionary tree was the *Temnospondyls,* including: ~ The tiny, forest dwelling & sail-backed *Platyhystrix* (which may have used it's sail to warm itself from the sun), ~ The huge (6-8 meter long) pseudo-crocodilian *Prionosuchus* (having long narrow skulls & conical teeth, that were perfectly adapted for piscivoration - much like modern *Gharials),* ~ The terrifyingly massive (3 meters long, weighing 500kg), wide-mouthed (needle teeth even across the palates of their mouths) salamander-like *Koolasuchus* (which may have hibernated in burrows during the long *post-Gonwana Australian* winters) & even ~ The bizarrely boomerang-skulled ambush predator *Diplocaulus* (which perhaps had both external gills & a hunting strategy similar to the modern *Wobbegong* shark). Real *Life* can be just as weird, just as amazing, as any *Speculative Biology Project!*

That got me curious what would a planet ruled by only invertebrates look like? For example imagine if the events that ended the rain of giant arthropods in the past never happened. We could have stuff like giant aquatic sentapeads or huge weevils and other beetle species grazing on vegetation. And dragon flies and wasps evolving to be the equivalent of birds of prey in our timeline.

There's an unfinished Worldbuilding project I made a while back, it's similar to Serina, but instead of canaries, it's inhabited by Naked molerats, with corvids being introduced years later.

Although I like the concept. They basically turned amphibians into mammal like creatures. Many of the features that were mentioned here would be impossible for an organism classified as "amphibian".
