I learned from a kindly retired biologist that took the time to check very closely how clean things get that washing an item three times was needed to really dislodge the filth. He explained what each wash accomplished as well. The first wash gets the water based grime moving, the second breaks through to the resins stuff that's gone off and solidified and the third wash suspends what's been trapped under that layer. Not sure if I'm explaining it so well but trust me he's right. I've followed his lead and been surprised more than a few times to see the wash water dirtiest on that third scrub. So if you are suffering from contact dermatitis, this three scrub practice works. Also tea tree oil and lavender oil together do some alchemy when mixed with soap that lifts the nasties that soap alone can't penetrate.

Hello there sir, I'll try and be concise. I bought a 2005 Honda CRV back in November of 2023. It's in great shape mechanically for being almost 20 years young, but the interior could use some extra TLC. It wasn't until recently that it dawned on me how disgusting the seatbelts are (driver's seat belt being the biggest offender). I searched up how to clean seat belts and landed on your video. You saved me approx $300 because that's what I was quoted for a full interior detail. The amount of grime, dirt, and I assume embedded sweat from all previous owners that washed off of these seatbelts was impressive, to put it lightly. Thank you for such a thoroughly detailed explanation. Your tips, presentation and delivery are invaluable! Now moving on to renting a steamer from Home Depot at only $25/day to hit up the upholstery! I will not spend $300 on an interior detail when there is free knowledge on KZfaq from generous people like yourself. Thanks again.

One thing I did on my older car was to singe the fuzz that forms on the edges. I used a bb que lighter and very carefully moved it back and forth so as not to burn the belt.The fuzz burns easily just make sure to keep that lighter moving.

Instead of spraying, take a container with laundry soap and drop seat belt in full water container and let soak. Then spray what doesn't fit in container. You can also use dawn instead.

If your seat belts are that bad then your seats need cleaning also. Most will be just sweat and body oils. Going to be gross but will look so much better if you do it all.

Speaking of cleaning car seats, I cleaned the ones in my 14 year old car because they were so dirty. It was the most satisfying thing I’ve done in a long time 😅I’m a middle aged woman and not very handy (yet;) but with the help of a portable Bissell Little Green Machine Pet Pro, my seats look brand new! I was wondering how to clean the seat belts and thanks to this marvelous video and thorough explanation, this is my next project. Thank you so much for your awesome videos and advice!

your seatbelt also won’t self-retract easily if it is dirty. the dirt and grease increases friction .

Can I use Clorox?
@AmplifyDIY

I would not recommend clorox. It'll change the color of the seat belt, and possibly damage the material.

To rinse it couldn't you just set the bucket on the seat and submerge the seat belt? Then just run a towel along it to remove most water, and let it air dry. I realize there are portions that won't reach but it'd reduce the time needed to rinse it considerably.

Thanks for sharing this topic. It's not something I ever thought about and frankly I don't much care how my belt looks, but it got a layer of mould or mildew or something on the passenger side and it needs to be cleaned to pass the safety inspections in my country. I've been putting it off worrying about doing more harm than good as I was warned about using chemicals which could degrade it structurally. It's very helpful to see how thorough a job you can do with just general cleaner. I'm on my way.
