As a new amputee, there are definitely some home modifications that I needed to put into place to keep myself safe from falling - starting in the bathroom!
In 2018, I made the difficult decision to have an elective below knee amputation due to years of constant and mounting pain and over ten ankle surgeries trying to save it. This channel is to document my journey of surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

Smart preplanning. Setting up bathroom is unique for each person. This vid will help many people.

Amputee_Basics thank you so much! I’m glad you think it could help people - I know that planning ahead (and I had the gift of being able to, not everyone does) was a lifesaver to my mental health. And coming home to modifications helped my safety a ton.

I am a bilateral below knee amputee. My prosthetic legs work well enough that I didn't feel any need to modify my toilet. I do use a bench in my bathtub. The bench extends far enough out of the tub for me to sit on it to remove my "Peg Legs" before showering. My wife said that now she sits down for part of her shower, she likes having the seat available! I already had the extended hose for the shower head, but now it has become essential for cleaning! You need it to get a cleansing water flow on the butt area. I find that one of the most difficult parts of being an amputee is showering, and now tap dancing has become totally impossible! (Not that I could tap dance before!)

I know of single amputees who tap dance ! Not sure about double... but hey, you could be starting something !

@@Loweene_Ancalimon Funny thing is I can't tap dance, (I never could) but I can do the "Moonwalk", which I couldn't do before. I found that out by accident when I was trying to slowly back up so my dog could get past me.

jeremy affeldt my dad just put those in his shower. He added them when my grandma came to visit but he never took them down, so I’m starting to think he’s using them him self 😂 sometimes I think about getting some just cuz I’m such a clutch and have almost slipped and died in my shower multiple times 😂

It looks like you have it all well planned and what will work best for you. I like the idea of the toilet accessory to make it easier to get up without fear of falling. When I'm not wearing my prosthesis I use my wheelchair to get around in the bathroom until I'm ready to put on my leg. Years ago I thought I didn't need a shower stool until I slipped and fell in the shower, that was a bad experience and I've been using a stool ever since cuz I'm a lot smarter. lol

Doug G. The toilet accessory has by far been the most helpful - and ironically was the one I was going to skip! 😉 I’m on crutches because my house will not accommodate a wheelchair so the handles on the accessory are especially helpful for not falling they’ve saved me more than once! And yikes I’m sorry you fell!! Falling in a shower sounds especially scary and painful. I’m glad you were able to work it out and it hadn’t happened again! 😀

I kinda expected all of these EXCEPT the product dispensers. I never would have thought about leaning down being dangerous. But it makes sense! Thanks for the tour!

I've now set up two bathrooms for disability access. You have a smaller shower so space is limited and you already have the larger of the handgrip seats, if you have room, they're about $70, the full chair (with a weight capacity of something like 550-600lbs) is SO much more comfortable and secure feeling. I started cheap with a shower stool, narrow and no backrest, felt like I was going to fall every time. If you have room and the budget get the biggest chair you can. I like the toilet bars, I got my mom a different kind that goes to the floor so you don't have to mod the toilet at all. It's got wide legs and is seriously stable. I know they sell clips to mount the handheld shower anywhere on the wall you want. They come in suction cup and permanent screw in mounting methods. Grab bars are also very useful. In my shower which is in a converted tub area i have a long horizontal bar, a vertical bar on the wall with the shower head nd controls and one OUTSIDE the shower opening. It's the most useful one and the one that's saved my bacon more than any other. Just sharing my experience.

The shampoo dispenser !! , now that’s one thing I don’t have!!! Great Idea!! I would recommend a handle in the shower!!! They have great suction cup ones that work amazing!!!!

Looks great. I am in rehab right now with being amputee. I been learning so much about my amputation and proper handle hold so much more. I will be here in rehad 3 to 4 weeks before they will look at releasing me

The best shower seat I've used I got on Amazon. it's listed as " Medical Tool Free Assembly Bathtub Shower Chair Seat and Bench" It's a backless, all plastic white thing with a "Made in the USA / Premium quality" stamp in the picture. I found I like the wide plastic legs more than thin metal ones - it feels sturdier, it's easier to clean, easy to take out of the shower when someone else needs it, there are notches on the side you can hook your shower head on - it's just nice - someone put a lot of thought into it.

Well planned! I truly appreciate my shower chair now due to a recent fall on my knee. I wish I still had a detatchable shower head like that one though, we didn't think about that issue when we got one of those 'rainfall' style showers before my injury. Another must for me, tho, is towels for the floor so I don't slip on any wetness.

I agree with all her bathroom modifications - they are crucial to keeping you stable in a slippery bathroom. If you have a tub, however, rather than a walk-in shower, please buy at least one grip that fits over the edge of your tub. You will need it to exit the tub safely - even if you are using a shower seat in the tub. With a badly damaged left foot, I have used mine every time I've used my tub shower and it has kept me from slipping numerous times. Now that I have an amputation scheduled for my lower leg, I have purchased a second tub grip since I will need that added leverage.

As a “normal” my parents thought I was odd because I wanted them to have a shower bench and toilet bars. I actually don’t mind them and actually wish that these things were more standard.

It is awkward to ask but I cannot figure out how to pull up my underwear and shorts in a public bathroom. At home it is hard enough but in a bathroom stall I can hardly manage it with out becoming dizzy, frustrated and afraid of falling. What do you suggest? Am I the only person with this problem?

I find it weird that you seem to be left to your own devices to experiment. We have a whole industry around access facilitation in Australia and some fairly strict standards suppliers have to conform to. .. my colleague who lost his right foot to infection has had mods to his house designed and installed by a specialist, we've just done his return to work assessment..... things like the rails on the toilet ... that would have to be firmly attached to the walls ... each rail has to be able to support your weight and the torque from holding a 'stumble'
