My THOUGHTS on AMPUTEE Jokes, SELFISHNESS, and DEPRESSION
My Best Leg: Ossur Rheo XC
My Best Foot: Ossur Proprio
My 2nd Best Foot: Ossur ProFlex LP Torsion
My Best Liner: Ossur Iceross Seal In Liner
My Best Prosthetist: Eugene Rossouw (Cape Town SA)
Hi guys!!
I have been an AMPUTEE since 2004.
In 2000 I had a paragliding accident, after which I struggled with complications of my left leg. Constant infections and acute, chronic pain pushed me to the point where I considered amputation. Ultimately it was the right decision, which opened up a completely different life to me.
Today I am a happy amputee. In this channel I aim to share what it is that got me to this space. I hope that you find your own happiness, despite, and even because of, the struggles of becoming an amputee :-)

The way I heard that joke is that after they removed the good leg. They had to go back and remove the bad leg. When the man woke up with no legs he went to see a lawyer intending to sue the doctor. Until his attorney told him ‘I’m sorry but I don’t think you have a leg to stand on. Sorry bad joke

Im a left bka since July of 2016 n i make jokes all the time. Ive always been a joker. However I went into a deep depression, PTSD, insomnia, aggressive anger, anxiety. Im a lot better n received my 3rd BA in psychology now a LCDC n doing well. But the jokes I say are im the south Texas hopscotch champion and won without my leg. Or that I can beat anyone in a game of twister just take my leg off n stomp that blue dot they couldn't. Or I got hired at I-hop pancake house as waitress n my name tag says "Eileen" I lean. 🤣🤣🤣🙈🙉🙊its all good to look at ourselves n laugh!!!💯💯

Ok another one!! Sat in a pub near to the dartboard having a drink with a friend. Two lads were playing darts but after about 15 mins I noticed that they had stopped playing and both were looking my way and then laughing together. Finally one came over and asked if he could have his dart back. I said yes where is it ? He said it’s stuck in your leg!! I hadn’t seen it when it hit the wire bounced off the dartboard straight into my leg. Didn’t feel a thing !!

It’s strange that most times I’m ok with people making amputee jokes and laugh at them myself. . But other times I feel offended because I’m not in the mood because the person may have gone overboard and not know when to stop. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way
@theampedlife
@theampedlife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darryl, I experience it exactly the same as you. For me depends from where it came and also how the humour was delivered. Sometimes I'm tired or fragile and it might hurt, mostly I can laugh with someone. There are certainly some out there who joke at the expense of others, as opposed to with us, which is highly offensive. Thanks for an important perspective.
@dmandman9

@@theampedlife I’m the same way with others. Before I joke with someone, I try to make sure I’m laughing WITH them not AT them. If their body language changes or their laughter seems forced or uncomfortable, I instantly stop with the jokes or teasing. If I don’t have a certain comfort level with them, I don’t joke .I I try to treat others the way I want to be treated. . I also know that some people simply don’t like joking around. They’re not wrong. They simply aren’t wired that way. I respect their personality

Amps rule!! Thanks Chris. I am lbka since Jan 2016, after 24 yrs with a busted leg. I am called stompie, duisendpoot and my socket was almost used for a Curriecup when Cheetahs won a year or 2 ago. Hi Armand, Yeah amps rule bru! Thank you for watching and for commenting, and for sharing your humour. There are so many jokes we can come up with, and situations to laugh at. I must say the Currie Cup is a new one. I wonder if mine will qualify as a World Cup? For me it certainly does. So at 6 min I start talking about being self absorbed, and how we should remember how much help the was, and still is out there. It's not only about me ... This is something that affected you? Im really curious about why you say this, unless it's too personal. Good luck with the Cheetahs!

Many years ago as part of my job I had to visit a scrap yard and obtain a serial number from a mobile crane my company had financed . It was loading a truck with Swarff which are metal turnings from lathe work it looks like metal springs and the only way to load them is with a magnetic disc. The scrap yard owner stood next to me as he shouted to the driver to drop the disc about five feet away from me. When the driver hit the on button my leg immediately shot towards it and I grabbed the owner around his neck and shouted him to pull me away. This he did and we went for a coffee in his office both laughing at the situation. Later that day I noticed that I was collecting small metal objects pins clips screws on my trousers yes I was magnetised!! I told my boss about this next day gave him a small and impressive demonstration- he looked at me very seriously then asked smiled and asked if when I laid in bed last night did I swing to north !!

Good to see you Chris. You're an inspiration to us all. We're back in lockdown in the UK. It's difficult for everyone during this time but especially hard to get motivated when living alone. I've been having problems with my leg staying on even though I've just got a new leg socket, (which cost a fortune!) I can't seem to keep the suction. It's really getting me down. I had such high hopes. so I'm feeling disappointed. I'm waiting for scan results too which is always a scary time. So many jokes are more than welcome at the moment!! Loving your video's. Sending you love and a big virtual hug. xx

Hi Wynn, thanks for your wonderfully kind message :-) Down here in Africa we've seen that UK and Europe are suffering again, I'm so sorry for you guys doing it all over again. The impact of the isolation is becoming increasingly apparent in the work I do, more and more people are feeling emotionally vulnerable and socially isolated. Please maintain your connectedness with those that matter in your life, do regular check-ins to share difficulties and to have your struggles heard by someone your trust. Im disappointed to hear the new socket loses its vacuum ... and inclined to want to ask "how can that be possible?" Have you tried the Ossur Iceross Seal In Liner with the rings? I hope the scan results indicate a good outcome, thinking of you and holding you in mind x

I was crossing the road in our local town and as I stepped off suddenly saw a car coming down the road fairly fast so I stopped in the gutter. Then realised the car had decided to pull over and park where I was standing and it did this fast ! I got one foot back on the path but the car trapped my foot when it stopped Driver got out looked at me and said you ok? I said yes but would he mind moving his car a little bit as he’d parked on my foot ! His face changed to horror and jumped back into his seat when he stopped again looked at me said are you sure your ok?? I said yes no problem- I never did say it was the false leg!! Made me look hard!!

As a HD amputee I have work colleagues making jokes all the time. But I’ve known then for a long time before I lost a leg so they know me and that I will make fun of myself and certainly I give back as much as I take. Better to joke about it then to pussy foot around it. No pun intended 😇

Thanks for the comments Richard. I'm with you on this, facing my truth as an amp and being able to share some humour about it definitely works for me, I'm all for a laugh - except if it is at the expense of someones emotions or attacks their dignity. Ive been on the receiving end of a nasty comment which is hard to forget, but fortunately easy to move past, due to being completely at peace with my situation. My friends and I are very direct about our abilities or what we can no longer do - whether its due to amputation, fitness, or growing older! It is what it is mate 😊

Hi Ed, it is always important for people to consider who they are trying to amuse - is it funny for everyone, or funny for them only? A joke at the expense of another is not a joke, it is hurtful. I think it is OK to point that out to the person, when it is appropriate. I speak up if I feel uncomfortable, if only to be honest about it with someone who is important to me, to ensure the relationship is sustainable. Most people will understand if they care enough.

Loved the video. Can I just ask on your channel if anybody noticed that following amputation the effect of alcohol on the body increased ? I asked my surgeon about it and he said he thought that as I had less blood now then the dilution of alcohol would be increased in my body- well now cheaper to get boozed!!! Later in life I became type 2 diabetic and wondered whether this dilution effect could be applied to sugar intake. I think it could does anyone have thoughts on this?? Ps I’m not a doctor!!

I also suffered with very painful shin rashes in my groin for many years and tried loads of treatments but they all failed eventually. When I became diabetic I stopped taking sugar as much as possible. Then found that all skin conditions cleared up on their own after one month. Since found out that the medical profession know that almost all infections thrive on sugar !! Knowbody tild me!!! Anyway I’ve had a good session on your site and thankyou for taking the trouble to produce it. Regards bob

Final message a tip for leg amps -when walking down the road if you keep your prosthetic next to the road you gain a little more clearance to swing your leg because every path in the world slopes towards the road for water drainage ! Can make life a bit easier !, that’s it I’m done
