Yes when I fly I always take off my leg for the extra legroom but I'll have to say that sometimes the pressure change has made it harder for me to get the leg back on but I deal with it. Funny story I was flying and the guy behind me was all stretched out with his feet sticking out underneath my seat. Somewhere during the flight he tapped me on the shoulder and said hey I lost my shoe can you see if it's up there. I said yes and bent down and said here it is and started to hand him my prosthetic leg. The guy screamed like a little baby I don't think his friends will ever let him forget that. And I had a pretty damn good laugh too. Thanks again for all your videos

I am a recent AK amputee Oct 2016) I received my first prosthesis on January 30st. The amputation was a good thing. No more Pain!!! No Phantom pain either!!! I have enjoyed your videos, but find some of them are really geared only to BK amputees. As an example, Taking off you prosthesis to get more leg room is far easier than it would be for a AK amputee. I have to take my pants down to get the prosthesis off and need a lot of room in front of me. It would be nice if you partnered with an AK amputee and added some AK specifics for folks lke me. Thanks Rob!

Rob Brown I’m an AKA and have been for ten years now. If you ever have questions please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m an active mum of six and also a ski teacher. My amputation was also a very good thing after years of pain and trauma. Best wishes and hope things are going well.

Most of what was discussed is exactly what I've experienced from traveling in my 30+ years. I always get an airport wheelchair. Depending on how I feel, I'll either get padded down which I don't mind or I'll go through scanner. I get airport wheelchair. First on plane, last off. Now you know per our last conversation I just looove your ending. Lol

The last time I flew I went from Portland, Or (KPDX) to Indianapolis. The TSA agent in Portland was very good. All you have to do is let them know you have a fake leg and the pat you down, swab you and send you on your way. The TSA agents in Indianapolis on my return were even better. They let me completely skip the line! Maybe they were just trying to live up to their call letters (KIND). Some handy additional information they won't tell you. If you have a disability you can arrange to have a friend meet you at the gate! Normally only passengers are allowed into the gate area but if you call ahead you can get your friend a gate pass. All they need to do, after you call, is go to the ticket counter for your airline tell them your name, your flight number and show ID. They can then get the gate pass. They will need to go through TSA security just as if they are a passenger so they will need to show ID and anything they have that is banned on a plane will be taken away. I was able to meet my nephew this way while I was laid over in Phoenix. It was really good to see him, as I hadn't seen him in over 20 years. If he hadn't got my attention I would have missed him as he was no longer a little kid.

I had to take a kinda long flight half way across the country. The lady at check-in was all too happy to wheel me to the gate. She told me that it gets old really fast behind the counter and that everyone there will take any reason that presents itself to get a bit of time away. So if you feel that you're inconveniencing them, don't worry! You're actually probably doing them a favour!

I have been disabled for 24 years and live in the UK . I visit southern America a lot ! lol . I dont know if they feel sorry for the old English cripple but I dont experience problems in any country and the USA has by far the best attitude . I have traveled with my electric wheelchair weight 200kg !!! and leg braces on both legs , soon to be one brace and one above knee prosthesis. I generally sit back and let them do what they like . they normally check my crazy chair and a hand frisk . (i have that much metal both inside and outside me a scanner is a waste of time) . I think a good sense of humour and a polite attitude gets you through the entire process . I think my regular flying routine and my easy attitude help a lot . I am ex military and my sond serve now so I know the logic behind it . I have nothing to hide and dignity is something I realised was not that important after my 5th or 6th major operation. that you for the advice . Prosthetics are a whole new world for me .

Bka here. 6th time flying with prosthetic. I used to have my pride and walk through the airport but now i opt for a wheelchair. Tsa precheck here and if my ticket doesnt say it we go back and get one that does I always opt out of AIG and they give me a pat down instead. Last week was the first time the explosive trace came back positive. I was asked if i wanted a private room and im like no thank you. My bag was searched manually and i asked if they wanted me to take off my prosthesis and they were adamant about me keeping it on. Now i know why. Thanks amputee coalition! I asked what could set it off but was told its sensitive information and a sensitive machine. After searching sites i found that glycerin is a common culprit. Even when you go through the body scanner you get swabbed and if positive you get patted down so why go through AIG anyways? Im male and dont care if my genitals are touched, just be gentle ;) if the tsa agent is cute i say so.. even got an agent in orlando to blush.

I travel a lot for business, and am a right leg BKA. On one occasion my shoe had a false positive for Nitrates (explosive) and they could not figure out what to do, as I could not get my shoe back on if they took it off. I told them to run the entire prosthesis through the machine, and the TSA agent said to me, "Yeah, that would look great on KZfaq." I thought that was funny...They ended up just taking a few more swab tests and sent me on my way. It did take about 20 minutes or so. Every airport is different, there doesn't seem to be any standard protocol for amputees.

I went on Holiday 3 weeks ago. This was my first time going on Holiday for 15 years as my health allways stopped me and i would stay home and let my wife and children go sometimes 2 times a year.Now that im alot better and my illness has been identified and i had surgery in 2009 on my lower back and then i last my left leg in june 2016 i have a prestetic now and i get around in the wheelchair when its too far to walk with sticks and pain in my lower back.We booked our holiday with Thomas cook and we did everything in their store face to face so there was no mistakes or hickupps about my Disability or My Amputation. They where great and was told i would be first on the Aircraft in a lift and first off as well as first through check in ect The security check was brilliant i was carrying Morphine MST Pills in my hand luggage as well as other strong painkillers and various injections ect (im not a Diabetic).They just scanned my bag and they asked if i could walk through the metal detector i said yes as i was doing this they swabbed my wheelchair and checked it over.They didnt ask me to take my choes off but if they did there was no way i can get my shoe off my prostetic foot.They didnt even ask they just swabbed everything and went over everything with a hand detector.It was no different as if i was abled bodied just the wheelchair and my shoes where the difference and they found it no problem.I had a letter from my Doctor about my Medication they didnt even want to see it they said they had seen on the scanner what i was carrying and it was fine.Bloody Brilliant i say to the Security at Newcastle upon tyne Airport on the north east coast of the United Kingdom. lol I had a brilliant Holiday i didnt want to come home it was amazing and we met alot of freinds some where just nebby and wanted to know what happened to my leg. Others would tell me thry where having bets on how i lost my leg. I am a big guy of 6ft2 inches i weigh around 16 stone but i dont have any fat on my i do go to the gym and keep trim so im bigger than the average man and i dont drink Alchol i never have.Apparently he won the bet as he bet that i was Military and lost it while in Service in Syria.I told him he was the winner. I dont mind people asking if they are in your company and have a laugh and joke first and get to know each other and each others personalities.Then you can ask how i lost my leg no problem and i wont lie.

Love this video, i went thru Chicago to las vegas, they couldnt have been more helpful. They put me up by the restrooms and offered to offload me first but i declined. Everyone has different experiences im sure but i wouldnt hesitate to fly again. by the way our stay in las vegas was awesome, I did the strip on crutches and a wheelchair one night. Dont let being an amputee stop you if your wishing to fly or go on vacation. just a little planning ahead.. Mines a right leg BKA by the way.

Hi, I'm not an amputee but I had to go through checks with a knee down boot for a damaged lower leg. I live in NZ so they couldn't care less! I was afraid they'd ask me to take it off which would take ages but she just swiped the metal detector over it and sent me on my way. I did, however, get stuck at the back of the plane. I had to lug the boot all the way down and then couldn't fit it in behind the seat so whenever the stewardesses came down with the trolley I had to stand up to get my leg out the alley way :(

I’m an above knee amputee (have been for ten years now) and have had plenty of experiences with air travel. Every single time I’ve had to deal with TSA it’s been an absolute gong show! I’ve had them demand I remove my leg. I’ve been yelled at for only putting one shoe on the belt (when not wearing my leg at all and I’m sitting in a wheelchair or using my crutches). I’ve been made to take the leg off and go through the body scanner only to have them freak out because the scanner doesn’t know what to do when someone doesn’t have all four limbs. I’ve had them want to take my microprocessor knee apart so they “can see what’s in this cylinder”... it’s hydraulic fluid you genius, hydraulic cylinders usually contain hydraulic fluid. I’ve been told, when not wearing my leg, to get out of my wheelchair (always mine, not a loaner chair) and “just walk through normally”. I’ve had my crutches (again not wearing my leg) taken away from me and been told to hop through to get them back. I’ve been told my entire prosthesis must be dismantled so everything can be tested. I’ve been told all sorts of things. The airlines have usually (except for United and American) been decent but TSA has always been a gong show. Now airport security in Iceland, England, Germany, Austria... never an issue. Always super polite and respectful and they know how to handle disabilities and prosthetics. LAX was difficult for me because I had to get to the opposite end of the airport and United had broken my crutches (forced me to gate check them and wouldn’t allow them in the cabin) so I was left with no way to ambulate across the airport. Do you think anyone in one of those snazzy golf carts would give me a lift? Of course not. When we flew to Germany via Iceland and Denmark I had not booked any special assistance as I was confident I’d be fine. The airline (Iceland Air) contacted the respective airports before we landed and I had assistance with a golf cart ride to each connecting flight. Very thoughtful. I don’t think I’ll ever fly to the US again due to the hassle with TSA.

I almost always get patted down in security & sometimes have to wait until there is a female that is available to do so, which can be frustrating. I have traveled a lot post-accident and ALWAYS get the bulkhead seat for extra leg room. It was the best on the 14 hr flight to Australia, had more room than anyone else :)

I'm still on the waiting list to get my leg removed (which I'm terrified about). But I have flown since my back injury. I have permanent drop foot with associated numbness and weakening and flying was a pain because I had to explain that taking off my shoe (which is also my brace that helps me to walk) will take a while, it's really hard to put back on and my foot will fall (I had to remove it anyway because, welcome to Australia). Then every passenger was the most impatient person on the planet, some old lady hit me in the back because my limping was slowing her down and then by the time the 4 hour flight was over I was in tears because of the pain and stress of that day. Hopefully next time will be a bit easier, hopefully I'll have one leg and a robot leg instead one leg and a dead leg.

I'm not an amputee but I travelled with a broken foot in a cast. On my outbound flight I had assistance so was pushed around in a wheelchair and taken through a special security check, yay no queuing! Coming back I decided I didn't need a wheelchair as the airport was so small and I ended up standing in a queue for security for at least half an hour, then the idiots asked me if I could walk through the metal detector without my crutches as they would set it off! As if they were some sort of fashion statement not something I needed to get around...

As an R/AK living in Europe, I travel internationally several times a year. I've been through many of the biggest airports in world. I've only been asked to remove my leg once, at Frankfurt, but they relented when I informed them I could not. Most of the time I'm in shorts, so there's no surprises when I set off the magnetometer. I'm pulled to the side and given a pat down, goose, swab, and wand check. It is slower than the rest, but I've rarely felt put out by the security process.

Hi Kristine: My name is Dawn from Wisconsin. I’m not an amputee but have gone thru some stuff like sprained ankle at 52 Years old. Never had to use crutches Before and after 3 days I thought I’d fall And break my leg. I really felt deep compassion for anyone using crutches Because I don’t like to be tied down. I found your spirit amazing when I saw you try the iwalk.. if this was easier for you than crutchesand it didn’t rub on your skin, I think this iwalk crutch should be distributed all around the world so everyone being held back By a leg disability can be free to travel the world or go to work if they want. You’d be a good sales representative For the product and like a social worker Befriending kids and adults with similar challenges. I’d be interested in helping you by carrying and traveling and distributing The products around the country or world if we can make the connections To those underserved in the medical industry. It could be you’re own non Profit company . I have a passion to travel and solve problems where I see them, bring Necessary tools and supplies to those underPrivileged and if I can find strong Godly men to help me build or remodel A beautiful resort recovery and healing Center for those broken down in life. I’d like it easy access by plane or boat From USA , and on a beautiful beach With access to fresh coconut trees. In you’re video you said you didn’t mind Sharing, so I was wondering how, and when you had to have a foot amputated?

A TSA pres-screen clearance might make life easier for you. I am not disabled... not physically anyway... :) and having the clearance means I do not have to take off my shoes, belt, take out my laptop and I can leave my coat on. You only pay $100 for it and it's worth it - even for domestic travel. It's usually available at major airports and you go through the pilots entry. Google "GOES". KZfaq won't let me paste the link on here.

I've been an AKA for over 30 years and have never had an issue travelling. I don't mind the patdown and swabs because I know I haven't done anything illegal. As far as popping off the prosthesis for more leg room, that would be difficult for an AKA. In some of your videos, you make it seem like being an amputee is the most arduous situation in the world. I guess that would depend on your insurance and prosthesist. Your videos ARE interesting though. Learning from a different perspective.
@AmputeeOT
@AmputeeOT 6 жыл бұрын
Brenda Ferebee I make it seem that way because I am speaking to a broad audience. For some people, being an amputee IS arduous. Most amputees are older people who lost their limbs due to complications from diabetes. Imagine a 70 year old dealing with this for the first time. Some people can’t figure out basic things without help. That’s why educational tools such as my vids exist. Lots of new amputees are concerned about airline travel.

My friend and I were heading to Orlando, FL to go to an event at Disney World's Magic Kingdom. We had taken an airport taxicab to BWI airport in Anne Arundel County, MD and my friend is wheelchair bound with metal rods in her left leg and right arm. We went through the metal detectors and I went through fine but she had set the alarm off. I picked her up out of her chair and carried her through the metal detector again and the rods had set the alarm off. They took her in a room, stripped her down to her bra and panties and once they realized that she didn't have any weapons on her, they let us go. She now has a card in her purse from her doctor stating that she has metal rods in her. It saved her during her trip to a Baltimore Ravens football game when the hand held metal detector wand started beeping.

Chad Weaver I am a right leg BKA and I drive with no issues. I was very scared at first, but am comfortable now. Instead of flexing your ankle to press the accelerator, I just use the play in my socket to manipulate the pedal. Word of warning, do not tilt your steering wheel all the way down, or your socket may catch on it, and you may not be able to hit the brake. Practice in a parking lot until you get the hang of it.
