Amrutesvara Temple is located at a small village called Amrutapura, near the town of Tarikere.
This place is about 67 kms from Chikkamagaluru city and 50 kms from Shimoga city and is a must visit tourist destination
This temple was built in 1196 CE by commander Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka under the Hoysala King Veera Ballaladeva.
It is quite different from the more famous Hoysala temples at Belur & Halebeedu but no less in terms of its grandeur and the intricate stone work.
From a distance, at the entrance, it does not seem extraordinary, but it is by approaching that we discover the finesse of this temple which is a marvel. A feast for your eyes.
Temple is setup on a large garden facing in the front.
It is not a very large one but yet nicely built with very detailed architecture on the pillars, the walls and the roof.
In addition to the beauty of the Hoysala architecture, there is the particularity of the outer enclosure like the round discs, the roof of the temple formed with smaller looking temples which is very original design.
There are ceremonies all day long to bless devotes coming to this temple.
One more unique point of this temple is that, representation of events from the Ramayana are depicted anti-clockwise, and the Mahabharata are depicted clockwise.
You can also witness panels depicting events from Lord Krishna's life.
The poetry made by medieval Kannada poet Janna, one of the region's most famous poets, is also inscribed on a big stone near the porch.
It is said that lamp inside the temple is glowing for around 200 years and consumes a litre of oil every day.
