AMS 2's 1.5.3 Update has left me disappointed... (1995 Brazil GP)

I have been very much looking forward to the new Automobilista 2 update for a number of days. There were talks of a reworked AI system which offers much 'closer to life' racing than what we have seen previously. I jumped into a race at Interlagos in the Formula V12 cars with the 1995 F1 liveries slapped on.
Let's see what fun we can have in the next 54 laps...

I was really hoping to have an enjoyable experience. This was the best attempt out of the four recordings I made and yet it is still so far off what we need for an exciting and immersive singleplayer experience. Have you tried the update? What do you think about it?

I don't usualy do long races, but i'm interested in good AI in general, since AMS2 postioning itself like mainly single player game. But i heard that ppl having problems with Custom AI after update and i saw how over streamers race - their races looks good and all of them played without Custom AI. Maybe you should try just edit driver names without changing driver skills - this is technically possible. And max agression for F1 may be bad idea, even on normal agression AI overtakes each over.

AI aggressiveness ist not AI difficulty, it just influences their taking chances while overtaking. AMS2 is one of the best SP sims atm and I would recommend that you try out a few more races, Indycar and GT3s are very much fun.

I've done many races on the game since I bought it in 2020 but I've always ran into the same issue that its good for the first portion of the race and then descends into madness

From what I've seen myself the ai don't suffer from dirty air (which basically means that you can't do races on the Indy oval)

I think it's mainly 2 reasons. The first is focusing on online really, I doubt AI gets much development time. Second reason is that there are simply way more variables to take into account these days. Games have more content, more car/track/weather combinations. Balancing an AI around a few cars on a few tracks is much easier than having a general AI that works on all combinations.

The only thing I will say is that maybe the mod has messed with it. Obviously idk if the mod is purely cosmetic or if it changed the values of the car and drivers? Maybe a non-modded race would be better. I still thought this was good. Obviously would not spend the money for a full priced game and dlc, but I think this would be awesome to use for multiplayer.

@@fransisigos exactly, this mod he is using has custom AI files and is a very old mod, that is probably outdated now and definitely NOT calibrated for this brand new AI update that released a few days ago. He needs to go into his AMS 2 folders and delete the custom AI files and try it out again. I've had absolutely no problems with the 1969/1970 F1 cars on long distance races with random weather (4 slots). Even if a thunderstorm or hurricane comes through at any point in the race it doesn't matter, the AI lose grip the same time I do, pit when I need to, they race well and adjust well. Every type of car class the AI will handle differently. I remember last year I tried to do a 1975 F1 championship using the same settings as my 1970 F1 championship (which had zero problems and was awesome!) and for some reason the 1975 AI just literally could not handle changing weather, they would stay out on dry tires too long, or switch to wets too soon, or vice versa, and be way too fast, or way too slow, it was basically unplayable, I was forced to do shorter & fixed weather races pretty much, or test the weather before the race at every track in the championship. Which was the complete opposite of my 1970 championship experience where I could just choose "random weather" for all 4 slots and KNEW it would work fine everytime and not have to worry or do any testing at all. It just worked!

I don't have any problem while playing (PC-pedal-wheel-TrackIR)I enjoy every race (offline).its my favorit sim after update.(for me best drive feeling)

Finally someone who actually knows anything about racing AI makes a video on this overglorified AMS 2 AI. I bought the game after so many praises, but had to return to Grand Prix 4 to enjoy some AI racing. They feel lifeless.

When it's set up correctly it does actually work really well, but it shouldn't be that difficult to get working properly.

AI needs to get better across the board, 100%. To say AC AI may be on the level of new AMS2 AI is batshyt insane, though

My only experience with AC AI was a long time ago when I raced through an F1 2017 season and they worked okay, but that's all my experience with them

@@TheJamesEarly Maybe I need to work with its sliders more. Just recently I was thinking if AC had AMS2 AI, it would be a perfect sim. In fairness, the AI in every sim seems like you said that it really hasn't made any leaps forward in well over a decade. AMS2's seems pretty good with the need update. Not great, pretty good 😆

Try the NAMES patch as this leaves the Stats of the Drivers the same as the unmodified game and JUST changes their names.@@TheJamesEarly

At what level were you running the ai? The "agressivness" setting only affects how "brave" ai is when trying to overtake - it wont help them if they are slow if i understand it correctly. Didn't play the new patch yet but watched gplaps and sra streams last night and mostly looks good to me(but i liked ams 2 allready lol), cant wait to re-assemble my rig one day soon xD

Had the AI at 110, I always come back to the game because it's fun to drive and I really do want to like it but I've just not been won over yet.

@JamesEarly wow your a lot better then me - i struggle with 95-105 xD you could probably bump it up a bit for closer races. When people praise the ai its because you can you can go side by side/wheel to wheel with them and they wont murder you or pretend your not there, they will fight you and each other(tho they give the player a little more room)- they are not perfect but to me they just feel most lifelike if that makes sense(along with f1 & nascar2003 AI). (there are some issues/new bugs with the ai - just found & reported that oval ai is almost totally broken from spectating ai race each other, needs a hotfix or two for sure, blue flag behavior and strategy also need more work apparently) if I remember correctly ai will get "tiered" in long races so they start to fall of/make more mistakes as time goes on compared to quail/race start - something to keep in mind. Hope you do make a series out of it one day - it was enjoyable to watch and a good test xD

I've done 3 races and all been good one had a safety car because a cars engine blew and he was stuck on the main straight my safety car also tells me onscreen when it's green maybe your mods have messed up the game.

Maybe, I kept running into an issue where every lap somebody would spin and then stop for a few seconds which kept bringing out safety cars over and over

The blue flags are the issue that I have the most concern about.

Hmmm, interesting. I think your problem may be this specific car with this specific skinpack mod. Because the skinpack mod you are using has custom AI files - which were made a long time ago before this major update. So your skin packs modded AI files are not calibrated for this new AI update - therefore I think this is kind of a inaccurate test. You should try the brand new Formula HI tech classes (1992 & 1993 F1) it is amazing! Also, the 1970 F1 cars I havent had any issues all......and thats using random weather with 4 slots!!!!!!! For some odd reason, the 1970s F1 car AI work very well for long distance and random rain conditions. Its the best AI ive ever seen actually. And this was 1 year ago too. But not all classes work as well as this one for long distance races with random weather. I know the 1975 F1 cars AI are better now too, since I remember last year I tried to do a championship with them, (using the same weather settings as the 1970 championship I did that had no problems) and for some reason the 1975 cars AI would just break in the rain, either they would stay on dry tires for a long time (and be too fast or too slow for me than they were in the dry) or they would finally switch to wets again and then be too fast or too slow for me again. So my only option was to do fixed weather races, pretty much, because if I did random or changing weather then the race would be ruined by the AI. Or I would have to test it out every track with hours of testing. So yeah, the AI seems very, VERY dependent on the type of car you use. Because I was able to do a 1970 F1 championship, long distance races, with random weather (4 slots) and it was AMAZING. Literally the BEST AI experience ive ever had........but then when I finished the 1970 championship and decided to do a 1975 championship - all of the sudden the AI just sucked at long distance races or changing weather races and it was almost unplayable. I eventually just gave up and did shorter fixed weather races. But now the 1975 is much better than it was 1 year ago. So you should try different cars or try removing the AI files from the skinpack mod you are using in this video because those mod AI files you're using are quire old and not calibrated for this new update.

Thanks mate, I've been having a lot of fun trying out the 1995 CART cars, they seem to work much better than what I had found with the 1995 F1 mod. In fact, I'll be bringing a video out later today on my experience! Thanks for the comment though, it does seem like the AI are dependant on car/track combos.

Tried a race last night. The AI have not been improved at all, they also have a SIGNIFICANT advantage in changeable conditions, while on dry tyres on a wet but drying track I was struggling to stay on track (as one can expect) but the AI were driving as if it were dry. They don't know how to follow non-AI cars, they crash in the pits (it's even in one of the Reiza promo videos!) they also drive straight through user drivers as if they are not in front of them. The content in AMS2 is interesting (although I wish they had licenses for at least 1 full calendar of tracks for an F1 season) they also love putting in all the small details but the problems in AMS are all the big details. The steering, AI, netcode and multiplayer in general are broken.

I'm usually racing with 2023 Stock car, and the AI still wants to kill me almost every time we engage a tight battle.. maybe a bit better than before, but they are still ready to ruin their race just to destroy mine

Unfortunate that you're having a bad experience with ams2, I've been having a lot of fun with this new update. Kinda odd how the game just doesn't seem to work for some people.

It's probably because I'm expecting an experience better than anything else out there, I do have fun on the game and it's the reason I keep returning since I started playing in 2020. I've been playing a lot in my spare time and I've had a few nice races.

I think his problem might be the skin pack mod he is using which has custom AI files - these custom AI files in this skinpack mod are very very old now and are not calibrated for this brand new update that just released a few days ago. So I think this might not have been a very accurate test of the new AI update because he is using very old modded custom AI files. So I'm wondering if he tries different cars or if he just deletes the old modded custom AI files he is using then maybe he will have a better experience with the AI?

I have never and will never understand the high praise this game receives from the so-called top YT sim racing guys. It's had clear as day issues from day one and still looks so lacklustre all round.

I totally disagree with what you say. They may have had and still have issues but they have always been working on them and solved a lot od stuff. Also they are developing straight in the right direction. For me this is the best sim out there especially with the 1.532 update.

@@RalonsoF1 Sure they are improving the issues, but a lot of the issues are things that weren't there in AMS 1. I do feel it needs a good couple more years to really iron out some of the bigger problems I've encountered

To be honest I think every sim has critical flaws that could detract a user from playing said sim, I'd give at least 3 years before we hit a golden age of sim racing

There is always one. I have lost count of the number of great races with various cars and tracks I have had against the AI in AMS2 before and now with this fantastic update. I begin to wonder how much people like you are being paid by Codemasters to bad mouth AMS2. If your not taking money then more fool you.

There are plenty of games I don't like. But then I don't use a channel I have created to bad mouth them, based on what appears to be one car/track/race setup conditions, unknown AI difficulty and the and the wrong AI aggressiveness setting. As for sucking the game off, are you saying others are not allowed to enjoy AMS2, even when they set the AI difficulty and aggressiveness to match their own ability and/or enjoyment level? Each to their own. @@I-am-Josh

Codemasters pay me the big bucks mate! But in all seriousness, I am an avid hater of the Codies F1 games and have been for years. I'd love to like AMS 2 and I've played it on and off since the day the beta released in 2020 but it's just not good enough yet.
