Amstel Gold Race 1997 showed an incredible strong Bjarne Riis, taking his first and only classics victory. Attacking with 35km to go, Riis made an fantastic solo effort to hold of a strong chasing group with Andrea Tafi. The big dane was very powerfull.
Danish commentary.

The double standard knows no bounds in Pro cycling! Now just look at B. Riis. The winner in the video! When the tour de France started in Copenhagen 2022, Riis was told nicely that he had to stay away and that he was not welcome in pro cycling anymore! At the same time, Brian Holm (sports commentator and sports director) and Wilfried Peeters (sports director) were welcome even though they both participated in the same race in 1997 and were just as doped as Riis!

I remember taking about this race with a mate after and we were certain that Riis didn't have a front wheel puncture and he just wanted to have his wheels matching as he wasn't happy with the one he had.

He says he broke a spoke in the wheel, it was out of true. By how much we don't know, but this guy was cold, cold to take the decision to change the wheel late in the race like that. Notice the SRM box as well, probably one of the first in the peloton

Everyone who follows the professional "peloton", knows that in the age of doping, Riis was one of the most egregious offenders. I guarantee, his hematocrit level was sky high for this race. Of course he won; what would have been the surprise is if he had dropped dead from blood as thick as pudding!

Fordi han var mere seriøs med sin træning end de andre dopede. Det var jo ikke sådan, at man fik et skud i røven og straks fik man superkræfter. Der skulle stadig arbejdes seriøst for formen.

yes, it was the trend of that time, Lower frame but longer top tube, and seat position too rear

Greg Lemond was a pioneer of that position, it was called Lemond Geometry.

@Nobleazure It was actually Cyril Guimard, director of the Renault team (Lemonds first pro team) who came up with the long and low position. All the Renault riders of the time were fitted this way...Lemond, Hinault, Fignon, Mottet, Madiot etc.
@Nobleazure

John, I would agree with you. I guess Greg, being a pioneer, helped make it famous. He wrote about the relaxed geometry in his book. I googled "Lemond Geometry " and had many hits. I recently had a bike fit, and the guy asked where I picked up my position and foot angle on the pedal stroke, and I said Greg Lemond! He was an older dude and laughed!

Despite how it looks, i've tried it and it is actually really really comfortable like that. I found it helps me engage my mid back and lats properly somehow. Personally don't like too low bars but can do with a longer reach.

In November 2010 Riis published a book about his career as a rider, emphasizing that doping throughout the time he had competed was not considered by the peloton as "cheat", but simply as a part of the "normal preparation" for a professional rider

It was also very widespread amongst the elite amateur scene. Most riders doped to get a pro contract, infact at top level riders were doping already in U19's. However, regardless of how many doped or how widespread it was it will always be cheating. Top level cycling is mostly just the best of the dishonest people and NOT the best of the best. Most of the honest guys leave the sport behind. If no one ever cheated perhaps guys like Riis and Armstrong would still have won but perhaps not. We will never know.
