I agree that some of the expansions add too much randomness (especially Herr Feld as the black marketeer). But I totally disagree about the Dutch names on the cards! I love that and wish the kept that motif throughout the whole city collection! It's easy enough to kind of get a sense of what each card is by the picture, and a quick pic through Google translate certainly clears things up

I think the rule in Amsterdam, where you can take a cube to the next round, is a huge improvement over Macao. In Macao it can be so frustrating that sometimes the dice are against you and you are juist missing that one cube you need to build that one, powerful card that you want. Being able to build a powerful card in the beginning of the game, can determine the rest of the game.

I seem to remember that you can only deliver a particular good to the market once during the whole game. Or at least that’s how we played it.
@MatthewJohnsonA

That’s how we played it too, and would make the market less powerful.

yes, that's correct. each type of good can only be sold once to the market

Thank you for championing accessibility in the hobby Richard. "Accessibility first" should be at the forefront of the design process (and not just in game design). I have deutan (red / green) colour blindness and can confirm the issue is still very prevalent (Revive being a very recent example).

I'm 48 and wearing varifocal glasses for the first time. While it helps, I'd still say that fiddly hard-to-see boardgames have been the main reason why I've drifted a bit away from the hobby in the past few years. I still play boardgames, but I don't like being sucked into a session where I'll be squinting across the table for the entire game.

I agree with you Rahdo, and the "expansions" loosen the game even further. Too much so. I enjoyed Amsterdam a lot but I play without almost all the expansions (still keeping the end of game goals...for now), otherwise it's just *too* easy. Macao was so fun because it was so tight. This is still a very good game, but as you say, it loses a lot of that tightness which made it so great.

How does something become too loose in a multiplayer game? A competition can be either a race or battles over chokepoints. The former lets players adapt. The later crushes opponents early. If talking playing solo, that is different though. Rahdo only playing a game solo or 2 players can make a game seem looser than it is at more players.

@Rahdo so the game being loser may not come through this way, but the run-through does show off how the game works it seems to me. For myself. I enjoyed Le Havre more than Agricola because I believe it is is generally looser in HOW one does things, even if the food demands are tighter.
@rahdo

yup, i think a lot of folks prefer the appraoch. like i said in the final thoughts, brass birmingham is more beloved that brass lancashire. also, caverna is more belvoed than agricola. and is suspect that side by side, more folks would love amsterdam over macao :)

What if you use Black Market Feld to tighten up the market, so that you can only sell to him (for the normal return)? Once sold to, he moves on as usual and that good cannot be resold for the game. Or you could ditch the black market entirely. I’ll have to test these out.

Hey, Richard - watching your final thoughts and hearing you mention Bruge, Hamburg, Macao, and now Amsterdam got me thinking - what is your favorite game named after a prominent city? Would it be the aforementioned Amsterdam or Hamburg? Troyes? Carcassonne (The Castle)? London or Saint Petersburg? Hmmmm....
@rahdo
@rahdo Жыл бұрын
i think troyes it the highest ranked city name... burgundy is a region so it wouldn't count? let's dig it up... top 10 games with a city as their name and the game is actually about that city: 10. london 9. ulm 8. rebuilding seattle 7. warsaw: city of ruins 6. san juan 5. merv: heart of silk road 4. kashgar: merchants of silk road 3. blackout hong kong 2. macao/amsterdam 1. troyes there's also maracaibo, but i left that off because the game really isn't about maracaibo at all :)

Is it possible to play to the original Macau with Amsterdam?
@rahdo
@rahdo Жыл бұрын
not really. there's no way to replicate the original market (though this new market is better anyway), the costs for things have changed making it easier to invest, the layout of the city & the ocean has changed. if you ignore the additional modules and the black market feature, the game gets closer to the original macao experience though
@joelbloch08

@@rahdo Thanks! Have you tried it without the black market?
@rahdo
@rahdo Жыл бұрын
nope, i've only played it with the rules as written. the blackmarket is always an optional choice for players to make so not using it won't hurt anything, it just means you'll make fewer trips to the regular market because coins are harder to come by, but that's more true to the original macao as well

@@rahdo What about the Marrakesh?
@rahdo
@rahdo Жыл бұрын
d'oh! completely forgot. it's hard for me to judge that becaus i feel like i never got a chance to play it properly because my tower didn't work at all. i watched a bit of the MvM video they recently filmed and their tower was collecting keshi's like crazy, but ours simply never did. so based on our experience i'd have to put it at the bottom, but i suspect then when the tower is working correctly it would probably take the middle spot!
@GamingRulesVideos
@GamingRulesVideos Жыл бұрын
@@rahdo Marrakesh is my favourite of the 4 (or actually 6) by quite a margin. The tower is a weak point, but the game works perfectly well without the tower at all. It was designed not to capture that many - maybe 1 or 2. It works "differently" than normal cube towers which tend to catch more, and I was told this was a design choice to provide a small chance of things getting stuck, but not as much as in other games. The problem is, most games are used to other cube towers and assumed this one should work the same way.

I like the shipping changes a lot as it shakes up the game considerably compared to Macao, where everyone usually waits until the end to do mega deliveries. I also like the revision of the gold for points mechanism. It felt way too random in Macao. I don't really care for the expansion modules. The base game is fine on its own. While Amsterdam is a little looser, it does give you more control at the expense of being a little easier. I think it's not a bad change as it levels the luck factor for all players. Macao could be extremely brutal in that respect given the luck of the dice and turn order, although a skillful player will still usually always win. I would hate to play the game without the replacement cards that have text instead of icons. Amsterdam feels overpriced in comparison to other publisher's quality standards, even allowing for it being printed in Europe. And i say that as a person who backed it at $99, never mind $150. Not that i know anything about the real costs involved. If you can stomach the high price and accessibility issues, I do think Amsterdam is worth purchasing as an evergreen, classic, highly replayable euro. The gameplay revisions made by Stefan Feld improve the game quite considerably, in my opinion. It's a shame that Queen Games quite didn' t match up in terms of their production efforts

don't forget, not only is it printed in europe instead of china, but they're also using new green printing methodologies, which is admirable, but does drive the price up (for a good cause) :)
