Thank you Ton Koopman, for introducing me to Baroque organ music in the late 80s.It's been a lifelong joy of collecting as many recordings of different historical organs,and opened up a whole new world of music to me. Hope to see lots more of these vlogs.

This excellent vlog, which illustrates Ton's vigorous playing style, reminds me of the apocryphal story of the harpsichord technician who received a call from the owner of the instrument that was to be played by Ton in the coming weekend's concert. "I need you to come on Sunday to work on the harpsichord," she said. "But madam, the concert is on Saturday!" the technician replied. The owner explained, "That is why I need you to come on Sunday."

LOL. Here in Portugal a group of organists invented a humorous Game of Glory. One of the spaces was the Ton Koopman space where it said "Ton koopman played your organ proceed to the Organ Repairing space". Don't get me wrong. I really love Ton's enthusiasm and vigorous interpretations. Maybe the artist I have more CD's of

Altijd ook enorm energiek. Mooi gedaan weer, dank je zeer Ton. Ook de demonstratie van het Ruckers klavecimbel ca. 3:40 en Italiaanse Clavecimbel 4:30 en 5:17 om ruimte te beperken kort octaaf.

Thank you so much, Professor Koopman! It would be great for you to also cover the clavicytherium. If you count it as a type of harpsichord, there are surviving specimens that date back much earlier than 1511. I believe both examples date from circa 1475.

Laatste woorden slaan de spijker op z'n kop; feit blijft dat er in tegenstelling tot de generatie van Backhaus en Fischer (hoe goed ook) er tegenwoordig begaafde pianisten zijn die zo goed gespecialiseerd' zijn in Bach, dat zij door frasering, dynamiek en andere nunaceringsmogelijkheden op de moderne vleugel de oude muziek juist helderder en daardoor overtuigender over het voetlicht brengen dan vele klavecinisten van onze tijd. Jammer dat Ton de twee 'kampen' altijd als zodanig heeft beschouwd. Authentieke en zich ontwikkelende uitvoeringspraktijken hoeven niet elkaars concurrent te zijn als het er om gaat de essentie van Bach en de andere grote meesters te treffen door een zo bevlogen en goed mogelijke uitvoering.

Thanks for virtually inviting us into your home Mr Koopman. I’d love a harpsichord or clavichord. Please forgive me for playing Bach on the piano (for want of anything else) and enjoying Angela Hewitt’s playing of Bach on the piano. Nothing beats a good harpsichord though.

@@ortrungiselegrahe5173 Ton is a purist that is why he calls the piano a black monster lol. He and the likes of the late Gustav Leonhardt don't like Bach keyboard pieces on the piano. I actually enjoy both.

Already making theses differences is wrong and not in sense of Bach - no composer is more independent of instruments - a fuge is a fuge is a fuge - and the inner structure, the flow, phrasing and thinking of music has nothing to do with purism. 'We and they', black monster or the skeleton with sound of chattering bones in the ride of death - all this is far far away of Bach. So enjoy which interpretation you like and prefer ! What would the composer by themselves think about all this backlooking 'purism' ?!? The voice and flow of breath gives the best answer and orientation....

What inspiring words at the end of the video 👍 Don't let pianists capture our repertoire! It's totally okay to play Bach or Scarlatti or Rameaux on modern pianos. But you should not forget that this does not come close to the way the music was intended to sound.

Indeed, the Italians were said to beat on their harpsichords. Many German authors however considered this a defect of the Italians, and the French in particular stressed the importance of developing a sweet touch. One author (Le Gallois) described Chambonnières as having such a delicacy of hand that even when he'd play just a simple chord, you'd be able to tell the difference between his sound and that of any other! Burney is unfortunately misquoted in this video. He writes that he's never met a great harpsichordist in Italy, and laments the quality of many harpsichords and spinets "of which the keys are so noisy, and the tone is so feeble, that more wood is heard than wire".

You have to. These instruments need tuning very often. They dont have the metal frame as modern pianos do and wood just moves a lot with variation in temperature and humidity. I have to tune my harpsichord a bit every time i play...

Wat een leuke video, Ton! Heel informatief en interessant, zeker voor de mensen die niet vertrouwd zijn met deze instrumenten. Gelukkig heb ik geen "zwart monster", maar een "bruine schoonheid", een pianoforte uit 1890 van Broadwood.

Haha! Ik vind dat je het klavecimbel en de piano niet kunt vergelijken. Het zijn heel verschillende instrumenten, net zoals een viool heel anders is dan een cello.

@@luuktorn Wat heet....! Een viool en een cello lijken meer op elkaar dan een klavecimbel en een pianoforte. Een cello is een heel grote viool, maar een pianoforte is niet een heel groot klavecimbel.

@@GerardvanR Dat met een viool en cello was bij wijze van voorbeeld; ik wilde alleen laten zien dat het klavecimbel en de piano verschillende instrumenten zijn en dus niet vergeleken zouden moeten worden. Een pianoforte is zeker geen groot klavecimbel, maar een pianoforte (ook een mooi instrument trouwens)

It would be interesting when mr. Koopman would explain how the 17th century french lute composers influenced the whole realm of harpsichord music which is most of the time totally neglected and ignored by harpsichord players unlike Claude and Palisca who recognize the esteem french lute repertoire deserves.

The music becomes less and less intelectual. Even in the old days the change was noticeable (Buxtehude is more pure-intelectual than Bach). Piano suits well for more emotional interpretations (wait until I will finish...), where the organ and harpsichord focus more on melody and harmony - so on the pure music. So no wonder that piano takes the stage. On the other hand, we all know that emotional apects of a harpsichord performance are not so transparent (you need to know where to look), so an average listener will not notice them (probably). Also, the standarization of keyboard technique (by dominance of the piano playing technique) is somehow responsible for making much harder to become a young harpsichord player. The same for organ. Luckily, I have my CDs with Ton's recordings, so I have a safe source of my favourite music. Thank you, Ton - you are the best! BTW In polish, "ton" means "tone/pitch".

Op sommige punten had dit wel iets duidelijker kunnen zijn. Moet ik meteen begrijpen wat een 'viervoet', een 'achtvoet' of een 'zestienvoet' inhoudt en doet? Wat is de functie van de twee 'registers' (andere klank?)? En waarom die twee rijen toetsen? Echt uitgelegd wordt dit niet. Een revers microfoon zou ook helpen w.b. verstaanbaarheid.

De voetmaten geven de lengte aan van de snaren. Hoe langer de snaar, hoe lager de toon. Hetzelfde zie je ook bij orgels. Dus als je de middelste c speelt met de 8 voet, dan geeft de 4 voet op die toets een klank die een octaaf hoger is. Speel je met de 4 voet een octaaf lager, dus 7 hele toetsen naar beneden, dan hoor je daar dezelfde klank als de eerst genoemde 8 voet. De tweede rij toetsen is er voor meer dynamiek, je kunt zo snel wisselen tussen hard en zacht. Dit zie je trouwens alleen bij grote clavecimbels, die hebben dan op het onderste klavier en 8 en een 4 voet en op het bovenste klavier nog een 8 voet. Meerdere registers dus om het clavecimbel krachtiger te maken. Die klavieren kun je dan ook nog koppelen zodat je een nog krachtigere en volle klank krijg. En een 16 voet is een octaaf lager dan een 8 voet, maar dat is behoorlijk zeldzaam op een clavecimbel. Hoop dat het zo wat duidelijker is.

Bach's favorite instrument was the clavichord, Koopman hardly speaks of it and neglects playing it in concert and on cd's, being the harpsichord closer to the forte piano, it sells more cd's. However it does not reflect musical practice at Bach's household in the 18th century
