Most of the games look pretty rough but the realism in "Wild Streets" (10:32) blew me away

@@kevc3148 Those games that look rough are ports of old CPC games that didn't take advantage of the new hardware. You should check out a few of the homebrew productions... Bubble Quest, Ghosts 'n' Goblins (by Golem13) and Sonic GX to name a few.

Had one of these alongside a CPC6128. Loved it and especially loved Navy Seals and Operation Thunderbolt.

With every pixelart-type game, you really should enable scanlines. As seen in this video, the graphics look horrible without it enabled, because the graphics were designed to take advantage of scanlines.

That's a very subjective take on it. I mean, I prefer to use a nice CRT shader for my own emulation, but there's no getting around the fact that KZfaq compression makes scanlines look pretty messed up in videos.

@@itsmatt517 It was certainly _able_ , seeing as it was far superior to the other 8-bits, but sadly it didn't get the support. At least now it's getting the attention it deserves.
@GenMaster

@@mortenera2294 No one complained at the time about the release window. The magazines revered the technology under the hood, no one claimed it was too late (especially Amstrad fans, we were very excited!) or that it was meant to compete with 16-bits (although there were some instances where some reviewers said it rivaled certain aspects of the 16-bit machines, imagine that... I remember such comments on games like _Burnin' Rubber_ and Prehistorik II). The truth is that had the machine got the support it deserved and had Amstrad not made so many mistakes marketing wise, it would have succeeded.

No bashing here, but the 160x200 resolution mode looks awful, at least on a non-CRT screen. Its designer Cliff Lawson claimed the GX-4000 is at least as good and powerful like the SNES, most likely just because it had a slightly faster CPU (4mHz vs. 3,58mHz). Lol.

An Amstrad CPC without a keyboard, what a silly idea
@iXien
@iXien 5 ай бұрын
It's not a CPC without keyboard. GX4000 is a Plus system without keyboard. Plus/GX4000 systems are compatible with CPC but offer 4096 color range, DMA sound, hardware scrolling, hardware sprites with there own colours and resolution, and others. Available in 1986 or 1987, it would have been a nice system to play on. The bad idea was to release it in late 90 😉
@itsmatt517
@itsmatt517 5 ай бұрын
@@iXien Yes, the CPC Plus then. It was still silly to release any CPC without a keyboard though
@iXien
@iXien 5 ай бұрын
@@itsmatt517 Make the difference between CPC and Plus is important. Have you noticed these computers are called 464Plus and 6128Plus? It's because even Amstrad considered they are not really CPC computers. It's the users that decided to talk about CPC+, never Amstrad. The question is : Why do you think it's so stupid ? After all, every consoles are computers without a keyboard. Without a keyboard but with a 2 button joypad, you could make on GX4000 all the kind of games we enjoyed on consoles. For example, in 1990, text based adventure games already disappeared, prefered to point'n click productions. Using the new Plus featured and the cartridge system, you could make far more things on GX4000 than on CPC, even with 64Kb RAM (Megadrive uses 64Kb RAM too). So there are a lot of reasons about the unsuccess of the GX4000, but selling the equivalent of a 464Plus without a keyboard at cheap price could have been wonderful, made correctly and at the right time.

@@iXien I thought the whole appeal of the CPC range was the accessibility to be able to input basic code from the point of powering on?
@iXien
@iXien 5 ай бұрын
@@itsmatt517 Yes, you have an OS at startup, and that's right that a CPC and a Plus computer, or any other computer system like a C64 or a Spectrum permits to make so much more than playing. But these systems are fabulous playing systems too, so why not thinking about release a console using the architecture of a CPC/Plus computer, just to play 🤩 ? Nowadays, you can play most of the CPC games on GX4000, and it's a real pleasure to play Ikari Warriors, Arkanoid, Gryzor (Contra), Rick Dangerous, Cybernoid, Shinobi and so much more games on this little console. The GX4000 can offer the comfort of a console with a joypad to play games previously available only on computer like the Monty series, Jet Set Willy, Motos, Elektra Glide, Prohibition, etc. And when a homebrew developer decides to create a real GX4000 game, whaoooo, we can see the wonderful things we could enjoy if it had been seriously distributed at the right time 😉
